I spend a lot less now on games. I don't know that it's because of hard times though. There are so many cheaply available games — Steam, VC, PS2 bargain bin, etc. — that unless you are swept away in hype, there's much more gaming than you'd ever need already without giving into too many $50-60 purchases. I also find, and this is diving deep into personal opinion, that games today are rarely built well for replay value and tend to be better off rented anyway.
If it weren't for these options, I guess I still would be spending less on games, but as it is, I can't say economic conditions have affected my buying much at all.
I think we also need to consider resale value. A used 3DS vs... oh lets say an apple, the 3DS would maintain that value better but when it comes to an apple who would want to buy it once your finished with it.
