SONIC ADVENTURE 1 I don't get all the love for Sonic Adventure 1. I tried playing that game on my PS3 recently, and it's aged terribly. Glitches, terrible camera, sloppy controls, cheap deaths, yadda yadda yadda. The only thing I still love about Sonic Adventure is the music. The glitches were bad back on the Dreamcast, so why do people think the game still holds up today?
SONIC ADVENTURE 2 Now onto Sonic Adventure 2. It fixed most of the first game's problems, but the rest of the game was filled with extra playable characters who were basically clones.
Rouge = Knuckles Eggman = Tails Shadow = Sonic
I understand that Sega wanted to give the main characters some "rivals", but they could have at least made the characters all play differently. At least the story was decent and the voice acting was bearable.
SONIC HEROES I don't have much experience with Sonic Heroes, but I heard it was a generally enjoyable game. The team mechanic is unique, to say the least, but again there are just too many characters crammed in.
SONIC THE HEDGEHOG ('06) I hated this game. I hate Silver. I hate Crisis City. I hate the fact that Sega basically remade Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 with all the glitches and poor controls intact. The bosses were pretty good though, that's a plus. As for the music, I don't remember any of it. I only played through half of the game and took it back to GameStop in frustration.
SONIC UNLEASHED Sonic Unleashed was overall a very fun game (I only played the Wii version), but the Werehog levels were slow, boring, and just not very fun. Sonic Unleashed was basically Sonic Rush in 3D, which is good cause I loved Sonic Rush.
SONIC COLORS Sonic Colors took all the best parts of Unleashed and amplified them. The gameplay is pretty much perfect (except for a few poor 2D sections), and the music is spectacular. I know I gush about this game far too often, but I really feel that Sega has finally gotten the 3D Sonic formula right (which was basically inspired by Sonic Rush). Not to mention the graphics are beautiful, not just on the Wii, but for gaming in general.
SONIC GENERATIONS Sonic Generations really takes the entire saga and lays it out in front of you. Seamlessly blending 2 distinct gameplay types (Classic Genesis gameplay with Unleashed/Colors-style 3D sections), it feels like a love letter to all Sonic fans. Some of the missions can be challenging, and the Red Rings are hidden extremely well, but the entirety of the game is just perfection. There are only 2 stages that I absolutely hated: Crisis City (Modern and Classic) and Planet Wisp (Classic).
What are your opinions on the various 3D Sonic games? Do you think Sega should stick with the Sonic Rush/Unleashed/Colors gameplay, or should they go back to the style of Sonic Adventure/Adventure 2/Heroes?
I can't speak beyond Heroes as it sickened me enough to walk away for a long time, but you seem confused. SA1, the Dreamcast version at least, while having bugs had the least of them compared to SA2 and later games which got worse by the release. SA2 had more problems of falling through floors, getting gummed up on bosses flying through and taking hits instead of giving them (SA1 only annoyingly did this on the last boss as you rose into the sky to do hits.) Heroes was even more awful as I'd commonly fly through walls and floors to die, take hits on stuff I clearly missed or wasn't there, it just was bad.
The last one until Generations I dealt with was the first on Wii, but the shake controls were so sketchy the waggle to jump usually was 50/50 waggle to walk into a hole and die. Generations like you said though,it's fantasticand it fixes a ton of the problems that ruined the series.
I find it funny you left out other terrible stuff like the GBA, DS and that lame Black Knight title too.

I enjoyed pretty much every Sonic game to some degree, but I absolutely loved Sonic Adventures 1 and 2, Sonic Heroes, and Sonic Generations. I haven't played Sonic Colors yet, but if it plays anything like the 3D stages in Generations, it would probably be one of my favorite games ever.

Well, he's only talking about the 3D Sonics, so why would he include the GBA and DS games, when they're in 2D? (Nor are they terrible as you've implied) As for Black Knight...I don't think it needs to be said.

Sonic Colors actually takes it's gameplay from Sonic Unleashed. Unleashed, Colors, and Generations were all heavily inspired by Sonic Rush, they're basically Sonic Rush in 3D. Get the idea?
