Yeah I posted this in the MH3DS thread yesterday. It's a nice read. I had no idea Japaneese gamers actually liked the claw lol xD

The issue isn't that Japanese games aren't like western games. Japanese attempts to mimic western titles rarely meet with success, and when a developer in the country produces a worldwide hit, it's usually because they deliver an experience not found elsewhere. This issue is that many (but by no means all) influential Japanese designers refuse to examine western games at all. The result is that the Japanese gaming industry is currently suffering from its own version of the Galapagos syndrome, and the famed "Monster Hunter Claw" is its own specialized adaptation.

While the west was busy fine tuning dual analog control from movement in a 3D space, designers in Japan were experimenting on their own methods of control that had to work on the single analog PSP. Monster Hunter's particular scheme required players to twist their hands into a very uncomfortable claw like shape. This claw eventually became the gold standard for 3D action games in Japan, and gamers expected and demanded its inclusion. So when Konami produced Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker they had to offer western players pseudo-dual analog (using the face buttons) and Japanese players "the claw."

Yay for claw!

Of course I didn't read all of that but I have to agree. Japan hasn't lost their luster in any way shape of form. Games like Mass Effect, Fallout, Call of Duty, and really, just the entire rush of shooter games in general. Thats what poisoned the west side.

Just for you.

I found this to be a very interesting article, and I learned a lot from it. It still makes me sad that Japanese console games are so limited in their appeal, but reading why does my heart some good.

Also, this article reminds me why I gave up being a real-life "Weeaboo" - there's no way I could keep up with life in Japan. 13 hour work-days on a regular basis would kill me.

If Japanese games are so limited in their appeal, then explain why games like Zelda, Mario, Smash Bros., Sonic, Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid, Pokemon, etc. sell very well outside Japan.

Unless you're specifically referring to JRPGs, then I agree with that. The only JRPGs that sell well in the West are Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and Monster Hunter.

Those games you listed were released before the markets in the West and the markets in Japan shifted away from each other. This is a relatively recent phenomenom.

The gist is that while big studios like Square, Atlus and Konami release games for both Western and Eastern consumption, smaller companies have always been more provincial in their game design.

In summary, people were saying the Japanese gaming industry was in decline, but in reality, they were just releasing games that the Japanese like (which happens to be that which Westerners do not like).

But the thing is, this is not a recent phenomenon. Japanese companies have always released titles specifically catered to their market. Look at all the obscure Japanese games that were on the PS1 and PS2. Fire Emblem and Advanced Wars (Famicom Wars) were exclusive to Japan for years, having only recently appeared in the West.

And the same thing can be said about Western companies making games specific to their market.

This article is pointless. Japanese companies will always make their exclusive games, Western companies will always make their exclusive games. It's not the end of the world if a few niche Japanese games don't make it over here.

Look at the movie industry. The movie industry is dominated by Hollywood (America). Does that mean foreign movies have no place over here? Of course not. They're just a niche product. Same thing with anime.

It's called the "artificially" created casual market that the west is trying to cater to so they have a larger market......however in doing so they are dangerously close to losing their core fans "aka" "gamers" who don't enjoy games that are just fluff, and in all honesty this will likely cause the industry to crash as it did in th 80's due to the fact that most casual gamers feel gaming is just a fad and is cool for now, which won't last much longer, and once that happens they will have lost almost all of the casual gamers as well as most core gamers
I'm a very concerned gamer that fears a near total collapse of the video game industry

I sort of agree with you. But unlike during the crash of 1983, the video game market is a much healthier industry now. Big business and all that.

Interesting article.

If Dead or Alive: Dimensions is considered moe then I guess I'm a fan.

Absolutely nothing you said here has a shred of truth in it. Congratulations.

Lots of things are right. Claiming those games polluted anything isn't.

That's...not what this article is about at all...

@Tendoboy1984

Yes, japanese gamers have always been making games for Japanese gamers. That's the entire point of this article. However, it also talks about how the tastes of gamers both East and West have changed, resulting in this percieved "decline" in the quality of Japanese games.
