Its the better version of Mario 64, IMO. Its longer, minigames, and more playable characters. The only problem for me is the controls, which take a while to get used to.
I thought the controls were as great as they were in the 64 original, but I'm not sure whether I should own the DS version because it's graphically not the same as the 64 version (because I played the DS version at a friend's house). I still think the game is good.
I think it's a great game and I liked it a lot better than the N64 version I had no problems with the controls
Me neither. I was actually surprised when I started reading reviews bashing the controls--I really didn't ever have any problems with them. The camera could be annoying at times, but over all I thought it was an improvement upon an already masterful game.

In my opinion, unless you were using the original thumbstrap, the controls were very clunky.
With the thumbstrap though, it played well - next best thing to not having an analog stick.
A great game though, and definitely worth getting, even if you already have the original N64 title. Lots more to do, and the graphics were definitely improved upon.

omg i got sooo obsessed in this game about 3 years ago (got 70 stars in one night)
You are a trooper
Get this game if you have the money. Or if your looking for a great 3-D Mario game or just another DS game you won't be disappointed. Oh, and don't let the supposedly bad controls haunt you into not purchasing this game.

dIts a long game, in a good way. It took me a while to get use to the controls. I also LOVE the unlockable Minigames on there (sadly my brother hacked them...).
Here is why it is better.
1. You can be Mario, Yoshi, Wario, and Luigi, in this one while in the old one you could only be Mario. 2. I think there is like 20-30 more stars you can get in this. 3. Tons of Minigames (very addicting) while in the old one you dont have even 1 minigame. 4. Multi-Player (DS Download Play)
The one thing thats not as good it that it only has 3 files while the other had 4 but thats not a big deal.
Overall it is a great game.

The graphics are actually better polygon wise, but some textures have a lower resolution (not 100% sure of the textures though) For example the Bowser 3D model looks so much cooler and not as clumsy as in SM64 The multiplayer gameplay isn't really advanced and it was only supposed to be a demonstration of the DS's multiplayer capabilities The minigames are fun but they are not as good as the ones included in NSMB IMO I highly recommend it if you liked any of the 3D Mario platformers
Not better than the N64 version though more enjoyable. The game is very analogue stick dependent so that doesn't quite translate well to the DS. However, all things considered the DS version is STILL brilliant and an essential purchase imho.
I hope though do a wii version of the "improved content version" of the ds one. I'd snap it up.
The original Super Mario 64 is 100% better than the remake. I still like the remake, but Super Mario 64 is 100% better than any other game combined ever in existence.
I'm probably the only person who doesn't mind only having 8 directions in a 3D game by using buttons. I couldn't get used the touch controls however. As for the game itself, it's one game that every DS owner should've owned or played. Extra characters, Stars and levels make it an improvement on the original. I even went played the 64 version after playing the remake and I was blown away by how much the graphics had changed.
The graphics are definitely better than the original's, and I understand that many of the levels are easier in the DS version. The control was one of the reasons I didn't bother going for all the stars in the DS version, though. Some of the levels become very difficult without an analog stick. Of course, I often can't stay motivated to 100% a game once I've defeated the final boss. This game didn't compel me forward to completion the way Super Mario Galaxy did. I've only played parts of the original (I bought an hour of play time at a hotel and they had N64 games) though I do plan to play through it on the Virtual Console one of these days.
For some reason, I didn't like playing as 4 different characters. I enjoy playing as Luigi as much as the next person, but as was mentioned above it can be annoying to track down the hat you need for a particular level (especially when you take damage and have to get it back) or to have to return to the hub world to change characters.
Still, it's a game worth owning, as you get to play one of the greatest games ever...on the go.

I couldn't handle the remake and gave up. I know SM64 like the back of my hand, in fact better. Auto-pilot ruined the experience as I was always like.. "huh, that's not right!" Good game though.
