Oh Gameloft, you're so shameless.

It's supposed to be a Pokemon clone. Their Castlevania clone turned out well, so I'm interested to see what this'll be. Any impressions?

Dah, this will work.

Im not into Pokeman type games so unless this turn out to be awesome it seems like something I couldnt get into this one.
So this isnt a game ported over from the Iphone?

People keep comparing it to Pokemon, but from what I've read/seen, it seems much more akin to the Dragon Warrior/Quest Monsters games. Honestly, to me it looks promising. I have always loved monster capturing/breeding. Looking forward to more impressions.

@cheapogamer4life: Do you mean you don't like monster capturing-type games, or just (J)RPGs in general? If it's the latter, you have my condolences.

I got it yesterday, and I've been enjoying it quite a lot. It's not quite Pokemon, but it's close enough that you know what to do. I'd probably give it a 7. The biggest problem that I have with it, is how little information it gives you about your monsters, their attacks, etc. For 500 points, I'd say it's totally worth your time.

EDIT: I actually think that it's worth an 8 now. The more you play it, the better it gets.

The battle system is actually pretty fun, and there are quite a few differences from Pokemon.
1 - You choose your monsters attacks in order of their speed. (For example: Monster B in your team is faster than monster A in your team, and the enemy monster is in-between. You choose the attack of monster B and it uses it, then the enemy monster uses it's attack, then you choose the attack for monster A)
2 - When you attack, you get to chain attacks after it. (Example: You use Bite. As your monster is attacking there is a wheel on the bottom screen, and if you press A [Or tap it] at the right time, your monster attacks again for a less damage) You can chain up to three times)
3 - When an enemy monster is attacking you (Unless it uses a move that hits all of your monsters at once), four arrows will appear on the bottom screen. If you press the corresponding D-Pad button, your monster guards against the attack, making the attack do less damage.

In addition to these, the battle itself flows very smoothly. The fact that the sprites (If you could call them that, considering that they are larger than the Pokemon sprites) are constantly moving, along with the fact that whatever monster is attacking (Even the enemies) attacks from the front makes makes me think that some aspects of the battles are better than the ones in the Pokemon games.

Sounds promising. Any other issues so far? Also, in what other ways is it unique?

The more I think about it, the less I think of it as Pokemon. The battles are different, evolving your monsters is different, breeding is different, etc.
As for issues that I have with the game, the main ones that I have are:
1 - The attack moves themselves. I don't think each attack does a specific amount of damage (As far as I know), it just does damage using that element. It also doesn't tell you what non-damaging moves do. (For example: One of my monsters knows a move called Rage, and I think it raises its attack, but I'm not sure)
2 - When you evolve your monsters, it doesn't turn them into a new form, it just changes their color and adds a Plus at the end of their name.
3 - In order to talk to someone or grab a box, you have to walk into them just right. (It's not bad, just slightly annoying)
Their are a few other issues with it, but after you play for a little bit, you start to forget about them. All in all, it's a great game if you don't keep judging it against Pokemon (Which is kind of hard to do).

I just joined, and I haven't played the game myself, but I found impressions on another site:

Alright, I decided to buy it, so I'll do a quick review/go-over of it. All in all, this is a good game from the core aspect. The combat system actually keeps me watching it and playing it especially as you can turn up some good damage.

Reaching the starting screen you get to choose between 2 profiles, so 2 game saves makes this a nice improvement over similar games. Options simply consists of SFX and Music on and off buttons, so as of now there is no way to adjust text speed, though text speed moves as quick as you want it to in game by using A or the stylus.

Movement is handled on your normal 8 axis control scheme. As stated before, diagonals move exceptionally slow. Another issue I've ran into immediately upon moving is if you press one direction and quickly press another while walking, it won't respond to the second direction, though applying a delay works for that. The stylus is completely superior in this game for moment, you can either press on the screen and the character automatically maneuvers himself to the location or drag as you go to change it on the fly. Entering buildings and maneuvering around people is difficult with the directional buttons, but still possible when you understand them. Bumping into NPC's causes a conversation, as does pressing A while facing them, the stylus automatically pathfinds around NPC's, simplifying the matter.

Combat is handled by selecting one of your monsters, then selecting an attack. It gives you a round symbol called a "Chain Dial" which has a cursor spin and landing the cursor(Using A or the Stylus) in the highlighted yellow system performs a combo for additional attacks/damage. On top of that when enemy attacks are hitting you, you can match the direction shown on the screen(Using A or the Stylus) to guard attacks. Skills are used through a pool of SP like mana or MP of other games instead of the PP of Pokemon, so watching that requires inspection. Your first skill always requires 0 SP, making it handy for when others run out.

Capturing monsters requires the use of an elemental essence core, one for each type in the game, repeat pressing of the A button or tapping of the stylus raises your chances of success(A button is easier by far). You cannot capture monsters if your 20 monster limit is reached, there is no auto-deposit feature as per Pokemon and I am not far enough to tell if you can deposit them otherwise.

A side quest system is implemented where you can do 4 types of quests. Hunting, defeat a boss monster. Capture, capture a certain number of monsters that are specified, you get to keep the monsters you capture(Note that you can only carry up to 20 monsters). Spotting, find a certain number of items that are specified(Note that you can only carry up to 50 items). Photography, requires an X-cam, use the X-cam to take pictures. Activating a side quest takes you to a specific area immediately that you wander around for the objective.

Saving is handled at save crystals, save crystals also recover all HP/SP of your monsters. They are riddled around shops and towns. Haven't ran into one in a dungeon yet.

The music is constantly energetic and handles looping well besides the title screen which fades at the end and starts anew. The special effects sounds are interesting enough. No annoying sounds, plenty are good. I'm enjoying the music myself.

The storyline involves those who can and cannot see the monsters. Early on you are in a dream and reach the initial monster selection, Kiticon(Fire type cat), Tadpolaris(Water type tadpole), Flowerpower(Plant type budding flower). As time progresses your character goes to fight off a bully who stole your friend's essence core and you go to get it back, after you attack the bully and receive it, the monster inside summons for you to your amazement. Following these events, a classmate's sister is kidnapped by a strong monster deep within the forest outside of town and you volunteer to go aid the classmate in rescuing her. As far as I've gotten currently.

Sounds interesting, I might pick this up later.

Birdman

Sounds like the battle system is more akin to Bowser's Inside Story than Pokemon to me. I may have to get this as my first Gameloft game. I'll be waiting for the review though.

Exactly.
