Topic: Undecided between 3DS and Wii U (Bought the 3DS XL!!)

Hello! I'm a PS4 and XOne player and I'm very interested in acquiring either the 3DS or the Wii U, since I've always loved Nintendo and had a lot of fun in the past with my SNES. The thing is I'm undecided and really don't know which one to buy.

I'm a big Zelda and Super Mario fan, and there's two games I'd love to play: A link between worlds (3DS) and Super Mario 3D World (Wii U).
I considered the Wii U because I could play all the Mario games available with my girlfriend.
But, on the other hand, there aren't currently many Wii U games I like (appart from SM3DW, Mario U, Luigi U, Rayman Legends and the upcoming Donkey Kong).
On the other hand, there are three 3DS games I'd immediately buy: A link between worlds, Bravely Default and Pokemon X or Y.

I really like both consoles, but considering I already own PS4 and XOne, maybe the handheld option could be interesting. But, I'd really love to play with my girlfriend, even though there aren't that many games I'd like to play on Wii U besides those I already mentioned. So... it's kind of a tough decission.

If anyone could help me I'd highly appreciate it.
Many thanks in advance.

Best regards!

No idea. If I were you, I suppose I'd just put the decision up to how much you like RPGs in general. 3DS will probably see many more over the course of its lifespan than Wii U, but otherwise the Wii U has a pretty good edge in the playing games with others field.

Well my initial thought is to question why would to get a Xbox One AND a PS4 ?

As to your question ,if your goal is to play with your girlfriend then a Wii U would be the better route then a 3DS (as you would both need a 3DS) as nearly every game is Co Op on some level.

The 3DS is amazing and the Wii U is nice, too. The 3DS is cheaper, though.

I own a Wii U and 3DS. I also own a PS4!

I prefer some games on PS4 and some others on Xbox One.
Also, I can't play Titanfall on PS4 or Killzone on Xbox One.

If they are must buys to you more power to you, but even then to me if you going that route it would be more prudent to have a PS4 and a Gaming PC would give you the larger spread but thats just me.

3DS is cheaper and seems like you don't have a handheld yet, plus it has more games(up to now) and since you're interested in Bravely Default I'll assume you like RPGs. the 3DS it's the one of the best options if you like RPGs having MH3U(the WiiU has the better version of this one), Fire Emblem, Pokémon, Crimson Shroud and games from Atlus(there are lots of those and Atlus usually doesn't disappoint)

There are a few unanswered questions:

  • Do you own (or plan to own) a Vita, to go with your PS4? If yes, then the 3DS might be less appealing as you already own a portable gaming device.
  • Did you own a Wii? If not, then full backwards compatibility on Wii U is a nice feature that expands the game library with many great games - most that can be bought cheap now. (3DS is also compatible with DS games, but the 3DS library is strong enough that you probably won't care as much.)

My take is that you might be better off getting a 3DS. That won't let you play games with your girlfriend, but the library of games is stronger than what you get on Wii U... plus you already own two home consoles, so having something different might be nice.

I don't own a Vita but I did own a Wii.
I guess a handheld would be a better option than a third home console. Playing games with my girlfriend would be a great experience though, but after playing the Super Mario games, what's left? IMO, not that much.

Just go with your heart and believe and every other generic thing that disney movies have ever said and you'll find the right choice.

In all seriousness, the 3DS has the better gaming options.

The 3ds gaming library is fantastic. One thing about it is that the majority of the first party games tend to be the best of their series (or tied / right up there with the best entries)

This holds true for: Link Between Worlds, Fire Emblem, Animal Crossing, Luigi's Mansion (only 2, but still), Mario Kart, Rune Factory, Mario & Luigi RPG series, Pokemon (arguably).

On top of that, it has remakes(rereleases?) of classics like OoT3d, Starfox64 (tops of the Starfox series), and reaching back into the DS Library, Mario 64DS.

While Super Mario 3d Land and Resident Evil: Revelations don't meet the above criteria, they're still top notch entries in their respective series

You seem to like RPG's, so you may also enjoy Tales of the Abyss & Etrian Odyssey. Project X Zone is extremely unique and incredible.

That's not to mention games to come in 2014, including Bravely Default (2013 in Europe, lucky!), Yoshi's New Island & possibly Monster Hunter 4.

The 3ds may just end up competing for "Best console of all time" labels, and that's not just including handhelds. WiiU IS STRUGGLING, and while I'm a proud owner & a believer they will turn it around, the simple answer is the 3ds is the clear choice right now. WiiU in, say, 3-6 months? (Im assuming yo have some cash, already having ps4 and x1 )

I'd say 3DS if you're into RPGs, like you seem to be.

  • Mario & Luigi: Dream Team
  • Paper Mario: Sticker Star
  • Fire Emblem: Awakening
  • Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity
  • Pokémon Y
  • Pokémon X
  • Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked
  • Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers
  • Shin Megami Tensei IV
  • Etrian Odyssey IV: Legends of the Titan
  • Etrian Odyssey Untold: the Millennium Girl
  • Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance
  • Heroes of Ruin
  • Bravely Default
  • Tales of the Abyss
  • Project X Zone
  • Rune Factory 4
  • Unchained Blades (eShop)
  • Crimson Shroud (eShop)
  • the Denpa Men: They Came by Wave (eShop)
  • the Denpa Men 2: Beyond the Waves (eShop)
  • Picdun 2: the Witch's Curse (eShop)

As you can see, there are plenty to choose from on the system, and more are probably on the way.

Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)

If you only buying for mario and zelda, Wii U, if you want more than Mario and Zelda 3DS have a lot to offer while the Wii U doesn't, so 3DS

Thanks for all your answers. I have to say I finally chose the 3DS XL and I'm SOOOOOOOO happy I did. I purchased both Zelda: A Link Between Worlds and Bravely Default and they're spectacular in every way. I know this has been the right choice without doubt.

Many thanks for your help and we will be reading from each other in the forums!

Be sure to pick up Shin Megami Tensei IV at some point. It's SUCH an awesome game.

I still need to get this one it's hard to find it and it's a game I'd rather have physical.

oh try to get Fire Emblem Awakening sometime it's one of the best 3DS games out there!
and if you feel interested in Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate I'd recommend to wait a little to see if Capcom will bring Monster Hunter 4 to the west soon.(but MH3U is an amazing game too, except the 3DS version has no online )
