@BLP_Software Same; the trials are too basic in my opinion and most of the Totem Pokemon (TOTEM LURANTIS ARRGH) are way too easy. I appreciate the change this one time, but I prefer Gyms.

@LegendOfPokemon See, trials could've been more. Want to truly test your bond with your team? Why not do a Battle Palace style thing where the AI controls your team based on affection? Or a trial with no items save for the ones you find on your journey to the Captain? Or one with rental Pokémon to test your knowledge of various creatures and abilities under pressure?
I just realised that's the Battle Frontier. Damn it. Maybe they wanted that and Masuda said it wouldn't be appreciated.
I think the trials started okay, but they /stayed/ basic and similar. I see no reason Totem Pokémon style battles and AI couldn't be employed to a Trainer of some kind. We had a Double Battle Gym Leader, I see no reason auras cant be used by Trainers cough Lusamine.
Biggest problem is, they are such a part of Alola specifically. What do we do next? Harder gyms? Just big dungeons? Trials and say screw it? Battle Frontier style places? Or would Masuda shoot that down. Iunno. It feels like Trials by contextual design are limited.

@BLP_Software I think the next Pokemon Generation is going to revert back to how things have been. I am almost done with the second island, but this game really feels like it was going for the audience that left Pokemon 18 years ago. It doesn't feel like a new Pokemon for a new generation, it feels like a new Pokemon for the older generation.
People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...
Trials should be a thing in the future, but they should be reworked so they're like gyms. Instead of a totem for example, have an actual gym leader after you've done the trial.
SOS battles need to go, they single handedly ruin this generation IMO. I know some shiny hunting streamers are changing their pants over it, but I did the math and you get a lot more 'encounters' through breeding than SOS hunting when you factor in all the text, missed calls, and using orbs/leppa berries. Its just a nuisance especially when trying to catch pokemon.
You're more likely to catch a pokemon by throwing the ball than false swiping since it'll call for help almost every other turn if you leave it in red.
TL;DR SOS is cancer.

Definitely agreed that the Trials were underwhelming, the "mission" aspect of the Trials are just poor man's gym puzzles with little to no thought involved and don't really diverge from what gyms did. I think they'll just go back to gyms next game.
At least now there's some sense to the game not having many double battles — four Buzzwole's + their weird, weird would make the world's 3DS' launch the nukes.
So I just caught a Komala. It's adorable and surprisingly strong; I won't be using it since I already have Snorlax but I was messing around with it for a bit and checked out its movepool.
I think its lack of access to Rest is absolutely criminal. I understand why that's the case but come on, it wouldn't be game-breaking or anything, would it?

I still prefer Gyms over Trials, but I do approve that both Captains and Kahunas interact with you out of the trials. I always found annoying that Gym leaders were always stuck in the gym and didn't do anything to help story progression.
I would love if they reused the format of B&W - Gyms with leaders that actually do something for the region.
@Tsurii - Yeah, it's no doubt for balance purposes, I just figured that its defences are weak enough that it'd be acceptable if it could use it. In hindsight, it'd probably break the main story playthrough though; it ignores all other major status after all...
