Bought a Metallic Blue New 3DS XL for about $250 last week and when I booted it up, I noticed that my screen was blurrier and low quality in comparison with the various screenshots and videos of other New 3DS XL's I've seen prior to buying this system.
I did some research on the matter as it really bothered me immensely that my screen doesn't seem right and that's when I discovered that the 3DS comes with two different screen displays. One is a cheap china quality knock off panel and the other is a high quality display that ups the other by a couple of notches in terms of image quality.
My question now, is why? Why would Nintendo do such a thing? Are they a bunch of morons or something? People are paying the sane amount of money for this system and Nintendo is out there trolling 70% or more of their consumers with lower quality screen displays.
Unbelievable, I would slap the guy who came up with this nonsense if I could, really. That's how pissed off I am.
Never heard anything about different screens before on 3DS. Take it up with whatever store you bought it from? If you have evidence that this is how you claim then you should have a strong case to ask for the higher quality replacement or at least a refund.
That is what I'm talking about. The 3DS on the left is washed out while at that angle while the 3DS on right still looks sharp. See the difference now?
I mean yes I do, but it's one blurry and dark picture without any context at all. Were they the same model of 3DS? Were they the same age? Were the brightness settings on both of them the same? That picture alone isn't enough to convince me that there are "70%" of 3DS owners who are being trolled with lower quality screens. Were that true, I suspect I'd have heard about this having already bought 2 3DSs myself.
What you should do if you're convinced you've been had is go to your store and speak to the manager and show him/her how poor your 3DS's screen is compared to others they are selling. If yours is significantly poorer I can't see how they'd turn you away without giving you a refund or a better version.
@Shinion Nintendo uses both IPS and TN screens in their 3DS systems. It's difficult to tell from viewing a 3DS normally, but IPS looks a lot better when viewed from an angle. IPS is the ''new'' tech (although it was invented in the late 90s) and TN is the ''old'' tech. I don't own a 3DS, let alone multiple to compare for myself, so I can't comment on the actual difference in quality in the screens, but I've heard about it before, so it's definitely a thing. Most people just don't notice it I think.
@Shinion so... let me get this straight, you're okay that yours is inferior to other people's 3ds's even though you paid the same amount of money to purchase yours as they did with theirs?
i think nintendo has you tied in a leash like a dog if you think that's okay
anyways, the reason i'm so pissed off is because from where i live, i can't return the system. the only way they'll give me a replacement unit is if mine broke or if it's faulty. you can't just simply waltz in a shop and demand for a replacement.
I ended up with the "lower quality" screen too and was upset with Nintendo. It is a poor business practice because the consumer can't trust on a certain level if quality. Like when I open a can of Coca-Cola I expect it always to taste the same and have a certain level of quality.

hahahahaha...
I'm quite happy with my LIMITED EDITION GOLDEN MAJORA'S MASK 3DS XL WITH MAJORA'S MASK 3D PRE-INSTALLED AND A COOL I GUESS LIMITED EDITION SKULL KID FIGURE THAT I'VE LOOKED AT MAYBE 7 OR 8 TIMES SINCE! even if I have a crappy screen.
Thanks for that though, made me laugh, especially as I'm currently debating the merits of a dogish creature that would be better off on a leash in another videogame.
From what I hear the difference is only noticeable a different viewing angles.
Yeah, it's not exactly something the normal consumer will notice or care about. But for some reason it became the hot topic of discussion here in the last few months.
@Meowpheel no, ips panels have better color reproduction. colors are richer and sharper. tn panels have dull and boring colors the screen also has a whitish tint to it when viewed at an angle
It really isn't Nintendo's problem if the store doesn't have a return policy. Does your country have some office for consumer rights? Y' know, the kind where you go complain and they usually put someone to mediate the dispute between customer and store?
@Luna_110 actually it is their problem as they're the ones manufacturing these products and putting lower quality components in some of them. i doubt i can do anything about this now. im stuck with this garbage system for the rest of my life. i'm just venting my anger now.
@FriedSquid but didn't I just say that none of those can be done in my country?
And no, don't lock this, people on this forums should be aware of this before they go out and shop for 3DS's less they want to have the same thing happen to them.
This is really unacceptable and Nintendo should be ashamed for doing something like this.
