Topic: Is Metroid Prime Federation Force Worth it for Single Player?

The game is now going for around £15, so I've been thinking about picking it up recently. I don't mind that you don't play as Samus, as I've always wanted a game that explores the Federation more, as well as a story directly after Prime 3. I'm not sure about the chibi visuals, but the graphics look nice. But I'm assuming that the online mode is dead now and that single player is the only way to complete it. Do you think that mode alone is worth the price? I've heard that the difficulty can become unbearable after only the 4th mission. Is there any way to make things easier, other than the lone wolf mod?

I would say no. I bought it because I was one of the few people who actually looked forward to it and thought it would be a great experience, but I hate the controls. If I could have played the game with a pro-controller and without the awkward moving of the camera-stick the games has I think it would be fun, but as it is I'd say it isn't worth £15. You can get much better games for less.

@AlliMeadow Wait so you have to use the c-stick to aim?

@JMR_Alden it's optional. If you have a new 3DS or circle pad pro then you can use the second circle pad or c-stick to aim. (I personally prefer this, but would use the circle pad pro more often if I could)
However the other control option allows you to play with out it and is similar to the GameCube Metroid Prime games. The circle pad is used to move and when pressing a button (R I think) you can aim as well. Also both control options allow for the use of gyro when locked-on which I think works the best.

As for difficulty, I haven't played for a little while since I got 100% in everything, but there are some missions that can be pretty tough by yourself. Some missions can also be a bit tedious to do by yourself, but I think there aren't too many of those at least. When playing single player you get a point bonus for not using the lone wolf MOD which helps with getting some medals, but there are some other MOD's that can help like ones that reduce damage or increase damage.
I think there are still a decent amount of players sometimes and if you were to get it, I wouldn't mind playing sometimes as well.

@yokokazuo Thanks for all the info! I guess I'll try both control schemes out since they each sound like they work pretty well. I might wait a little bit for a price drop since it seems to be such a divisive game but when I do get it, I will be sure to return to this topic and hit you up for some missions.

@JMR_Alden I'm in the same boat as you. I have this sealed but I'm not sure I want to open it. It looks fun but I downloaded the Blast Ball Demo...I really dislike that stupid C-Stick nub and using gyro to aim throws off the 3D.

I then caught wind of difficulty problems playing solo which has pretty much solidified my decision to offload. :/

@Dreamliner Yeah its pretty crazy to think that we live in a time where we have to have these discussions about a Metroid Prime game :/

@yokokazuo I added you as friend on Switch and 3DS. It'd be nice if you could add me back on both... I'm planning on buying FF and got no friends who own it I think. It'd be great to have some to play with sometimes (even if I might spent most of the time playing it solo)

@maruse ah, sure no problem. Didn't add you before since I wasn't sure who you were.

I'd be up for playing Federation Force again so long as I'm not busy.

I had this since launch and only completed maybe 3 missions. It's definitely a mediocre game, but it's worth a shot if you can get it cheap. £15 sounds cheap to me but if it's still too much it's worth a pass.

@adam9431 I can't disagree more with you about the game. Complete price or not and despite being hated by metoid fans for reasons that these developers weren't guilty of, the game is good. Other than the terrible decision with the art style, the game plays like any other prime game, offers mission variety, uses a decent variety of creatures known in the franchise and offers a fun multiplayer experience. It's one of the few fps on the 3DS, but it's superior to any other option by a large margin. To each his own of course, but personally I think it's a real shame how people treat it.

@JMR_Alden I didn't have any trouble with the controls or anything, and it's the best option for the 3ds if you enjoy fps games. That's not saying much considering the little competition, but I found it quite good even when comparing it to other fps from other consoles. Multiplayer is definitely a blast if you can find people, but the single player is also quite good too and definitely worth a recommendation.

I'm a metroid fan, but using the metroid franchise or name does not make me automatically like or dislike a game. Bottom line, the game is just not fun. It's mediocre. Saying it's a good game without sufficient evidence or reasons is grasping at straws to justify the resources it took to make this game.

Trust me: it's just an okay game. It's not terrible by any means. Look up reviews online and you will see very few people will call it a good game.

@yokokazuo thank you! I hope to buy FF in the coming months (though, probably, I'll get Samus Returns first)

You're getting the bare minimum of what Federation Force offers with only 3 missions in. I do agree that the game isn't fun at a certain point, but that doesn't apply to much of the normal mode in my opinion. There are some definite hits and a few misses in terms of the missions available. They are all manageable though alone as long as the player is willing to sacrifice some point bonuses and have both the Lone Wolf MOD and all three drones equipped. I would also say that the game is best played after using the SSB Samus and Zero Suit Samus amiibo. I'm not sure if I would recommend the game to anyone who is unable get those amiibo unlocks via a New 3DS system or is a completionist. This game may be impossible to 100% solo, if not due to the difficulty certainly to the tedium.

@adam9431 "The game is not fun" isn't a fact, but your opinion. Saying it's a good game doesn't need evidence, and even with said evidence, it's a matter of how solid it is to the person. I can show you reviews that agree with me about it being actually a good game, which can be considered evidence, yet, that won't make you change your mind if your experience with the game wasn't good. the same would happen if you present me "evidence" about it being bad. I can't see why anyone would be"grasping at straws to justify the resources it took to make this game". I mean, what would I win doing that? I'm not the developer of the game and I'm not related to any of them. If I say I enjoy a game, it's simply because I did. I don't need justification for that, but I can share my reasons and people don't have to agree with them in order to be valid. I'm not even trying to change the general opinion about this game, even if I disagree with it and I could easily assure most of them didn't even try the demo.

Yup, most people say it sucks and also mention they haven't even played, it so... having the majority saying a game is bad under this circumstance means nothing. You may not hate it for having "Metroid" on it's name but you can see that the dislike button says the contrary about most of the fanbase, and considering that the amount of dislikes is far superior to the number of sales, it's safe to say that most of the haters didn't even buy the product, so their judgement on the game is poor at best. If you actually see opinions about the people that bought the game, it seems the majority likes it. Then again, there's no data to back up this, just as there's no backup to say "trust me" and guarantee that everyone will feel the same as you about the game, much less that the popular opinion on the internet is fair in this case.

To me, the game is far from mediocre. To begin with, I clasify as "mediocre" games that don't accomplish what they tried and that didn't reach the potential they could. The game tried to have a fun co-op focus and to expand the Metroid universe in different aspects. It had a focus on missions instead of the solo exploration of the Prime entries while keeping the gameplay of said games and well, it succeeded. That's my reasoning behind my opinion about it, and it's not a matter of being right or wrong, just personal taste.
