Topic: 3DS memory card

Forgive me if I'm being a bit stupid but I can't find much info on here.

I have a 3DS XL here in the UK and have the memory card that came with it installed. I think that might be 4GB can anyone confirm?

I want to put more memory in but don't want to lose my downloaded games, demos and saves.

Can I do this and if so how?

What kind of card do I need and what's the largest memory size the 3ds XL will support?

Thanks in advance!

That's a good card. A class 10, 32GB, 30mb/s tranfser/record speed, I think that's fairly cheap(I'm from U.S.). Sandisk is a reliable brand, and this will get you the most out of your 3DS files.

To transfer your data, insert your current SD card into a PC and copy the files into your PC under a category/file that you'll remember. Insert the new SD card into your computer and copy the files from there.

People play it safe and won't delete memory from anywhere until they make sure their files were copied successfully, but that's up to you.

EDIT: According to Nintendo, they don't recommend using a card over 32GB.

Seconding Sandisk for a trustworthy brand. It's what I buy for both my flash drives and SD cards.

And yup, all you gotta do is copy your files from old SD -> PC and then PC -> new SD. Nothing to it.

If you want to check how much memory your current SD card has, you can check the data management app on your 3DS. It will display memory in blocks, where 1 block = 128kb and 8,192 blocks = 1gb.

Or you can just pop the card out of the 3DS and read the sticker on it

Thanks, I appreciate it! I thought there would be digital rights management issues. Didn't realise it would be so easy. Will order that card on payday

Nintendo DRM screws you in other ways but at least they haven't put any barriers to upgrading your sd card yeet

I wish Nintendo support exFAT (FAT64) and SD XC. So that we can just put in over 32 GB of games and an game as one file that is bigger than 4 GB.

Umm… Care to have some gravy?

They technically could upgrade the firmware to support 64GB or 128GB. They'd have to have some sort of data that says 3DS users have at least 16-20 or so GB, on average(based on their download count per system), or possibly if they start putting bigger files out there. Until then, most people don't even have an SD card over 16GB or need one.

I think 32 GB is o.k for 3DS my main concern is not running out of space but my system stop functioning and losing everythign due to lack of account system, on the other hand the Vita does have a huge storage problem, with files being much bigger than 3DS and memory cards being much more expensive..... I love handhelds and software wise this is the best time ever to be a handheld gamer but as much as I love both my 3DS and my Vita it annoys me to no end that neither company could get it right..... What is so difficult about creating a handheld that has both an account system and affordable storage.....

I agree. 32GB is just fine. I have a PNY 32GB class 10 with 20mb/s transer. I got it before better cards came out, but it works great.

As much as I understand having an account system, that's something Nintendo can fix if they decide to. I guess the PS Vita could fix its storage issues by having a PS Vita card to SD card adapter or something. I think it would be harder to fix PS Vita's predicament, because it's physical memory issue, while the 3DS could gain an account system(including, but not limited to, game sharing, cloud, etc) via firmware update,
