They just keep searching for each other forever. I've tried quite a few times and they never find each other but they don't give me an error message either. The DSi is a US unit and the 3DS is European but I wouldn't think that was the problem. Both units are working fine and both connect to the internet without any trouble.

the DSi and 3DS both are region-locked. Each is searching for a same-region system with which to connect, and since they can't find one in the area, it just goes on and on and on. Sorry to disappoint.
