Author Profile

Damien has been writing professionally about tech and video games since 2007 and oversees all of Hookshot Media's sites from an editorial perspective. He's also the editor of Time Extension, the network's newest site, which – paradoxically – is all about gaming's past glories.

I've been gaming since the late '80s (Atari ST for life!) and my first console was the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis – I've been something of a Sega fanboy ever since. I began my career in video games writing for magazines and websites such as Retro Gamer, Pocket Gamer and GamesTM, before shifting to a full time role on the Hookshot Media network as Editorial Director.

Experience

Damien began his professional journalistic career with Retro Gamer magazine and has since written for Pocket Gamer, Eurogamer, CNET, Red Bull Gaming, SFX Magazine and many other clients within the tech and video game industries.

As a co-founder, Damien has been with Hookshot Media from the very beginning, holding various positions prior to his current role as Editorial Director. He was the Editor on Nintendo Life for more than one period during this time, and is currently the Editor of Time Extension.

Damien’s work on Time Extension sees him covering all aspects of the site’s retro gaming brief, including news, reviews, guides and features.

I love sharing new and old stories about the vibrant history of video games

Expertise

Damien’s first game system was an Atari ST, followed by the life-changing Mega Drive! Since then he’s owned pretty much every major gaming system and handheld to hit the market.

Damien’s favourite all-time console is the Sega Mega Drive. Not only was it his first console, it also introduced him to the world of Japanese import video games and arcade-perfect coin-op conversions. If he could only take one system with him to a desert island, it would be the Mega Drive.

My favourite genre? Probably shmups, followed by arcade-style fighting games. I don't have much spare time for gaming these days, so when I play for pleasure, I like games I can quickly jump into for a short period!

From the Archive

We asked Damien to pick out his three favourite pieces of work from across his personal archive, and tell us why he picked them!

The Making Of: GameFan Magazine - Drugged Coffee, Pirated Games And Empty Bank Accounts

I love doing deep-dive pieces into the history of the magazines and publications that inspired me, and this one was one of the most fun.

The 'Kawaii' Is A Nintendo Wii The Size Of A Keychain

Seeing modern-day hackers take old tech and repurpose it for a new generation is one of the most fascinating aspects of working on Time Extension, and it was encouraging to see the reaction to this news article when it went live.

Feature: How Rik Mayall Helped Bring Anarchy To Nintendo UK

Rik was one of my heroes growing up, so it was humbling to be able to speak to some of the people who worked with him in this tribute piece, which was recently republished to mark the tenth anniversary of his tragic passing.

  • Talking Point Why Nintendo and Rare Should Reunite

Is now the right time for Rare to come back home?

Last week wasn't the best of times for the UK games industry. We reported that indie dev The Code Monkeys shut its doors after 23 years and on Friday Bizarre Creations – who produced the brilliant Project Gotham Racing for Microsoft, as well as the criminally underrated Blur – finally closed...

The feel of gorgeous hardware is one thing the Virtual Console can't emulate

  • News Dinkybox is the Toy Store You Always Dreamed of

    A treasure-trove of toy-related goodness awaits

We don't mind admitting it – we're absolutely smitten with video game-related toys here at Nintendo Life. In our humble opinion, you can never have enough Mario and Sonic figures secreted around your home or office, so you can imagine how we feel when we feast our eyes on the smorgasbord of cute...

  • Interview Geek Prints - Retro Video Game Clothing

Being a nerd has never looked so fashionable

There are many ways to show your appreciation for gaming's illustrious past. One is obviously re-living classic titles via Nintendo's popular Virtual Console service, while another is seeking out original hardware and software for that authentic experience. However, here at Nintendo Life HQ we've been...

  • Review Super Mario All-Stars 25th Anniversary Edition (Wii)

    With exclusive bonus item: Dissatisfaction

Nintendo has a lot to be proud of. Its heritage and stature in the video game industry is unrivalled, and the firm has presided over some truly significant moments in the relatively short lifespan of the medium. It goes without saying that the video gaming landscape would be near-unrecognisable were it not...

  • News Super Everdrive Flash Cart Miniaturises Your SNES Collection

Never get up off the couch to swap a cart again

Although the Virtual Console caters for the vast majority of Wii-owning retro gamers out there, it would be churlish to deny the fact that many, many people still choose to indulge in a spot of emulation every now and then. Modern personal computers (and some mobile phones) have gotten to the point...

  • Feature Slipped Disk - The History of the Famicom Disk System

We look back at Nintendo's first misstep in the domestic gaming hardware arena

Given what we now know about add-on hardware for games consoles, the very concept of the Famicom Disk System seems hopelessly flawed. Since this Japan-only system hit the market in 1986 we’ve seen the equally ill-fated Sega Mega CD, Sega 32X and Nintendo 64DD all come...

  • Review Super E.D.F. Earth Defense Force ( / Super Nintendo)

    Emergency on planet earth

Back in the 16-bit wars, the SNES was unquestionably the comfortable winner when it came to RPGs. Sega's Mega Drive (or Genesis, depending on where in the world you're reading this) was completely and utterly outclassed in this area, despite the presence of brilliant titles such as Shining Force, LandStalker and Light...

  • News How Nintendo Manufactured the Famicom on the Cheap

Recently revealed report hints at Scrooge-like attitude

As we all know, the Nintendo Famicom (the Japanese version of the NES, in case you were wondering) was pretty damn successful back in the day. In fact, it would be no exaggeration to state that the machine practically created the modern console market - certainly in Japan, at least. Nintendo...

When the Wii was first launched there was practically a media frenzy regarding the supposed flood of waggle-related mishaps. • News UK Retailer HMV Tickled Pink About Upcoming 3DS Launch

Doubts regarding retail price remain, however

We can all agree that the 3DS is going to be a pretty huge deal; glasses-free 3D in the palm of your hand from the company that brought you the DS, a console so ubiquitous it's a wonder that they're not giving it away free with packs of cereal these days. However, as excited as you may be, chances are...

  • News Capcom's Okamiden Limps to Retail in Japan

DS sequel lags behind PS2 and Wii versions in day one sales

We're absolute suckers for cute animals here at Nintendo Life so the high expectations we hold for Capcom's DS title Okamiden are entirely understandable - it's just a shame that Japan doesn't seem to feel the same way. First-day sales figures for the Okami sequel suggest that only 10,000...

  • Feature How ColecoVision Became the King of Kong

How a trip to the toilet resulted in video gaming's greatest coup

When you think of the early '80s video game scene one name instinctively springs to mind: Atari. This pioneering firm had practically invented the concept of the interactive television experience, and its all-conquering VCS (also known as the 2600) was incredibly popular. Naturally...

  • Review Arcana (Super Nintendo)

    Magic is on the cards

FTL's seminal RPG Dungeon Master kick-started an entire genre when it was released at the tail-end of the '80s; the gaming public fell in love with the concept of immersive, first-person adventures and developers fell over themselves to replicate the same atmospheric feel witnessed in the Atari ST classic.
