I never had a Wii or Wii U and I have not played Galaxy 1 or 2, or 3D World. Looking forward to the Switch releases for sure, especially 3D World! I hope they get around to Galaxy 2. So I'm only going based on what I've played.
Of the more open games, I think Mario 64 is an incredible achievement for its time. I was really hoping for more of a remaster of that game. Updated visuals, camera controls, and modern music would've been awesome. I also think Sunshine gets a worse reputation than it deserves, but I always liked the island setting. Many did not.
3D Land is my favorite of all, though. It's a perfect marriage of 3D Mario gameplay with simpler, smaller levels in a traditional, NES-style progression structure. That's the only game I've ever been motivated to complete to 100%. I suspect 3D World will end up high on my list, as well.
My unpopular opinion is that Odyssey was underwhelming. I think it just wasn't for me, because obviously a lot of people loved it. The levels and music just weren't very memorable for me, other than the New Donk City Nostalgia-palooza, which I thought was nothing but cringeworthy.
