@Arnold-Kage "Digimon World" came out in Japan January 1999, and "Digimon Adventure" (Season 1 of anime) aired in Japan March 1999. So to answer your overall question, it was a game first. But it's not a likely franchise to be brought to Smash IMHO.
@Arnold-Kage Technically it was neither. Digimon was a spin-off of sorts of Tomogatchi products. As Tomogatchi was popular with girls, they wanted to market something for boys, so Digital Monsters Virtual Pets were born. Instead of tiny cute creatures to take care of, you now have dinosaur-like creatures to fight each other with. The origin is much different from Pokemon's, so comparing the two beyond the anime's success is beyond me. Their names sound familiar, I guess?
