It recycles assets frequently (sometimes even from other games). The overworlds in general are pretty damn bland and generic. I remember people comparing it to an UE4 tech demo and Frontiers really does give that kind of vibe aesthetically. Not exactly the kind of environmental art direction I used to like from the Sonic series.
The level design is so poor (huge amounts of low-gameplay gimmicks like spring chains/dash chains/rails/etc) that the game practically plays itself much of the time. There's none of the momentum physics that the Sonic series used to be loved for. It feels more like a Sonic action RPG-ish spin off rather than an actual mainline Sonic game.
The story and its tone take itself way too seriously, and to some extent this extends to the characters as well, because for the most part they felt utterly bland and lifeless especially compared to usual.
Genuinely feels like something only modern day Sonic fans could enjoy. It's a total flop for me I'm afraid, this has absolutely nothing that made me fall in love with the Sonic series to begin with, as is typical of modern day Sonic Team games.
