Nintendo Switch Sports is now officially available (at least in some parts of the world), and as usual with a new game nowadays, Nintendo has issued a day one update. In the case of Switch Sports, Version 1.1.0 will unlock online play.
Here are the full patch notes, courtesy of Nintendo's Japanese support page:
Ver. 1.1.0 [2022.4.28]
General
- You can now play the "Play with people from all over the world" mode.
- You can now play "Play with friends" [online] mode.
- Fixed some issues to make the game more comfortable to play.
*You need the latest updates to play online elements.
And here's a Google-translated Nintendo tweet about Version 1.1.0:
"We are distributing the update data Ver.1.1.0 of the Nintendo Switch software "Nintendo Switch Sports" released today. By downloading this update data, you will be able to play the "Play with people around the world" and "Play with friends" modes."
As noted, this update is required if you want really join in on the fun and games. Nintendo dataminer OatmealDome has also shared some additional insights to the backend of the game - noting how some additional sports are text referenced, and how it's got the "same netcode style" as Super Mario Party.

NO MATT NO GOD PLEASE MATT I LOVE YOU
These big-headed plastic-like characters effectively put me off that game.
I know yesterday I commented that I wouldn't buy the game right now due to online requirements for customizations but I caved in order to have a new game to play with the family that we all could enjoy together.
Maybe I'll play online occasionally to unlock some stuff....maybe.
Dataminers have the complete opposite view on things as me. I'll watch a trailer, read or skim a review and SOMETIMES watch a short review if I'm on the fence.
Other than that I'm happy to go in blind and experience things for myself. Datamining seems like a cold, dreary, and strange hobby.
Isn’t the NEX netcode the news we wanted to hear?
If this means that a budget collection of sports games has better online than Smash bros., I will laugh my a** off.
I completely forgot this released to be honest.
man its bugging me the game is only out in some parts of the world. people are already playing it just give it to everyone at that point
It's nice that they're using the same online infrastructure
I was scrolling through this normally then i saw Matt.
My brain for a few seconds: 🤨
A few seconds later: HOLY MATT HVHGYGYFCBK
@Deltarogue Smash Bros. uses peer-to-peer connection. Which means that any sluggish performance is due to one of the people you are in match with. I think a better solution would be to rate players Internet connection. And then give you the option to only match with same quality.
Sucks they aren't there at launch, but it's still exciting to know we'll likely be getting more sports in the future! Dodgeball could be really neat, and basketball would be a nice game to have returning. Baseball is the weirdest exclusion, especially considering one of the plaza buildings look like a baseball stadium--I really hope they add that one down the road, as well as boxing and some others. I know we already have three tennis-esque sports here, but I'd like to see table tennis make a return.
I'll wait for them to patch in an actual game
😱
I'm kidding, seriously though I am going to wait until other sports get released.
@thinkhector P2P online should be no cost
@Bydlak,
Change them to Mii's, but I quite like the look of the more modern avatars, the Mii's are getting a little dated now.
@FroZtedFlakerZz I have been slowly adding Mii's into the Switch and you can bet Matt is there.
Awesome deal at Argos U.K £32.99

This is why I never pre-order and buy the game on release day, always deals to be had, and no postal issues etc.
did someone else get the " you can browse restaurant and facilities" message in between games?
This is ridiculously fun, Nintendo Life had the right idea in waiting for online to rate. The online is the main mode here and after playing a while, I'd rate it a 10/10. The Tennis is awesome, and so is the Soccer, and the Bowling, and I love how there's all those collectibles and leveling up, and how you can unlock new taunt messages and 2 word titles. It's got this progression system that was sorely missing on the previous entries. If you don't like Wii Sports you won't like this, but for fans of the franchise, this is as good as it gets.
The Tennis back on the Wii U and Wii you'd have to hit up on the controller often to recalibrate it in the middle of the match, and that never came up here, it just worked the whole time. Being a 2 player game controlling both characters gives you a lot of control and of all the games I've played (only about 3 hours so far), the game is completely lag free, never once pausing, or slowing down, or anything (which was a huge problem on Wii Sports Club online). The Bowling where everybody all bowls at the same time is quick and fun, rather than boring waiting for your turn. And the Soccer 4 vs 4 is really unlike anything and probably the best thing I've played in a long time, you get massive satisfaction when you can block a goal or score a point for your team. Once I got used to it, I didn't want to put the game down. I can't express what a massive improvement this is over the previous games.
@Bydlak
Weird thing to care about, but you can also use the hauntingly ugly miis if that's your preference
@johnvboy
Because I buy my games digitally and like for them to preinstall but thank you for buying let another piece of plastic for a future dump
I think NVC has the correct prediction. Black Friday will have a Switch bundle with Switch Sports.
@steventonysmith,
No problems, I just prefer to buy a game then can sell it on, therefore recycling it, which is also good for the environment.
@johnvboy
Digital is best for the environment that way there isn't 40 copies of Switch Sports sitting at your local GameStop.
@steventonysmith,
I do not like digital, love the feeling of physical media, each to their own I guess.
@johnvboy
So do you not use Spotify or any other music services? Do you have Netflix or any other streaming services?
@steventonysmith,
I download music, but like to own my movies and videogames, just like physical media.
@FroZtedFlakerZz Who is Matt?
@johnvboy
Just don't like it enough to own CDs?
@steventonysmith,
As I said it's just Blu-ray and Games I have physical, have downloaded music for years, plus the quality of digital downloads in particular Hi-Res Audio is pretty good.
@SwitchplayerJohn Who is Matt?
Not every game has to be Splatoon.
Also, if I’m being honest, the patches don't change the fact that the game is bad. It forces you into TV mode for Switch Lite, there's a SEASON PASS APPARENTLY, we have to wait a YEAR for golf, there's half that many sports than Wii Sports Resort, and need I mention that the only good sports in this game are bowling (of course), badminton, and chakram?
God, even Wii Sports Club was better than this, and that was a remake of the original game but with online capabilities that were ACTUALLY GOOD.
@Ruler-Of-All-Evil
Try to detach the sensor bar on the Wii for Wii Sports and tell me how that works for you. Also there is no TV mode for the Switch Lite. There are just certain games that don't work for it. There is no Season Pass, and Golf comes out in the Fall which is not a year away
@steventonysmith Keep on drinking that copium, man.
@Ruler-Of-All-Evil
I just bought a full sized switch so I can enjoy any game that comes out for it. You sound salty that you didn't
@steventonysmith Jokes on you, I didn’t buy the game. Because NINTENDO SWITCH ONLINE IS THE ENTIRE GAME.
