The Indie World broadcast this week had plenty of good games, including some excellent efforts that were squeezed into a sizzle reel near the end. One of these was GRIME, a 'soulslike Metroidvania' that's been well received so far and is heading to Switch in Summer 2022.
It's a title that's earned plenty of fans on Steam, with 'Very Positive' user reviews to back up the critical acclaim highlighted in the trailer. Its 'mutating weapons' mechanic sounds intriguing, and we're certainly hopeful that it can be well optimised for Switch.
Destroy... Absorb... Grow... GRIME is a fast and unforgiving Action-Adventure RPG in which you crush your foes with living weapons that mutate form and function, and then consume their remains with a black hole to strengthen your vessel as you break apart a world of anatomical horror and intrigue.
An unusual material collapses in on itself, the world shudders and contracts, and suddenly you are squeezed into existence.
What awaits you is a world unknown, alien in its own familiarity, and you must survive what terrors you face. Explore your surreal surroundings, absorb the many enemies you encounter, and use their own traits against them as you let yourself become far more than you once were.
GRIME lets you play to your preference, upgrading only those traits you feel most suited to your unique style. You’ll find there is more than one way to break open an enemy as you move through a variety of evocative environments, meet their inhabitants, and discover the source of their madness.
It already has an eShop page for those that want to add it to their wishlist.

I mean, it doesn't look too bad, but my interest in Metroidvanias has wavered a bit over time, so there would have to be a bit more to keep me hooked for this
Some cool looking creature designs, but yeah, I am getting a bit burnt out on Metroidvanias. There's so many now.
Metroidvania sounds nice... soulslike less so 😂
This is the game I want most for the switch. If it has a super smooth framerate that's all I'll ever ask for.
I have so many metroidvanias to play and complete, including Metroid AND castlevania. Love the genre but man there's too many for me to keep up with.
Looks like a very fun game. I hope the game play is really good.
When ever I see the word "souls like" I instantly lose all interest
I say keep em coming.
I can't get enough of these games.
This is the game out of the indie showcase I was most interested in.
Probably one of the better Metroidvania types out there. Thoroughly enjoyed it on the PC.
This looks great and will be a certain purchase. I couldn't care that its yet another Souls-like Metroidvania. It could even have rogue-like elements and a guest appearance from Shovel Knight. If it's a good game, I'll play it.
Two genres that are burnt out now in one convenient package.
The video looks good, but I doubt it'll look anything like that on Switch.
Iron Pineapple did a review of it. He said it started strong but grows tedious towards the end.
This looks interesting. Platformers and metroidvanias are my favorite genres (2D only).
At this point my Metroidvania journey will never end.
I have this on PC and really like it but kinda fell off it halfway through. I think it's a perfect fit for the Switch though if the performance is good.
@Solaine I'm still into Metroidvania's. Soul-like? nah.
So it's 3 games in one? since it's a souls, metroid and castlevania game 🤔
Honestly, I think the art direction is pretty uninspired. Looks like the first place high school students go to make "serious/disturbed" designs. ....Sounds like it is fun though.
I feel like that trailer could have used more shots of gameplay and fewer reminders of all the awards and praise that the game has received.
Why is the genre called Metroidvania instead of just Metroid-like, lol? Castlevania just copied Metroid, so why does it get any credit? I've never understood that.
@bimboliquido no, it refers to dying & having to go collect all ur currency, etc from the spot where u died. That's a specific souls mechanic. So disappointed im that game FWIW. I planned on 100%, all of a sudden it ended when i was about 50% through it, just randomly, i thought there should have been tons of lore/story left. I never went back, except to see how it ran for series s when i got it. Wasted $25.
