During its most recent Direct broadcast, Nintendo revealed a new 3D Kirby game was coming to Switch. It's titled 'Kirby and the Forgotten Land' and will be arriving in Spring 2022.
While it's still a while away, listings have now appeared on Amazon, Best Buy, and at various other retailers - giving fans their very first look at the game's North American box art, featuring Kirby and a cityscape that's been reclaimed by nature.
The game has drawn comparisons to titles such as Super Mario Odyssey and even the PlayStation series, The Last of Us. Here's how Nintendo describes it:
"In this new 3D platforming game, players can freely navigate areas using familiar Kirby copy abilities. What lies in store for Kirby as he explores a mysterious setting filled with abandoned structures from a past civilisation? Find out when Kirby and the Forgotten Land launches for Nintendo Switch in spring 2022."
What do you think of this box art? Will you be adding Kirby's new game to your Switch collection when it arrives next year? Tell us down in the comments.

Looks great, cannot wait for this one!
I really hope it does not have any resemblance to the last of us 2 in any way xD
Why are people comparing this to the Last of Us?
Tbh the land really does look forgotten
I just wondered the secret behind the abandoned island.
The more we progress into Nintendo, the more we begin to see the whole iceberg of lore. Super Mario Odyssey brought Mario back home to New Donk City. Splatoon 1, 2, and 3 were all foreshadowing humans with the third game's story surrounding the return of mammals. Now Kirby seems to be implying that humans used to inhabit the Kirby universe.
@ModdedInkling I think the humans thing was hinted at way before this, with a planet that's effectively just iced over earth.
He needs to be angrier, as per Kirby tradition.
@Thesharkfromjaws : That's more of a NOA thing. Kirby generally looks quite cheery on Japanese/European/Australian covers.
Surprisingly, they didn't make Kirby look cross on the NA Star Allies cover either.
@Thesharkfromjaws I second the call for more rage puff
@ModdedInkling The Kirby lore has always been bizarre and almost lovecraftian, I can't wait to see the videos on this game and how it adds to that.
Hoping the game also comes with some good challenges, too. The 3DS games had some sadistic levels, there's no reason this game shouldn't have them either.
I love moving Kirby around in Blowout Blast, so I’m pumped to have that range in this game but with more exploration. I’ll even go as far to say that Kirby’s approach to enemies is better suited for 3D movement than Mario’s base moves, so this could be pretty great.
It looks pretty mediocre to me, all the hype seems to come from the fact that it's finally kirby in 3d (wich they should have done in the n64 or at least ngc era already). The gameplay itself looks really basic so far and I don't really like the overgrown city vibe, I prefere the vibrant forest setting from the older games.
Looks bland and pretty uninspiring. I wouldn't look twice at it in a shop, TBH.
I figured that would be the box art when the picture and title first got leaked. I'm really excited to see the Kirby franchise go into a different direction and bring the pink puffball into a full on 3D adventure.
@Thesharkfromjaws
Here you go:
Move over Metroid news and speculation. Here comes Kirby.
@westman98 This puts me at ease
@westman98
Beautiful
It's not official until they hastily draw frown lines on the eyes
Cannot wait this new adventure with Kirby. Curious what, and whom left this world behind. Plus how did Kirby get here?
I'm really excited to see more of this game! I love Kirby, so I can't wait to try out his first full 3D adventure. There are a lot of great Switch exclusives on the horizon, I'm really excited for everything that's in store!
But what does the inside look like?
Now kirby looks even more like majin buu 😂
Kirby like Candyyy (eats everyone and everything) and it became the forgotten land.
stop comparing this game to TLOU especially TLOU2, this game definitely better than that.
@westman98 "Now, where did I leave the damn car keys?"
@anoyonmus To be honest, the setting reminds me of Nier: Automata.
@anoyonmus nobody compares really, it is just fun
Good to see they haven’t forgotten this game
Kirby: Automata looks awesome. Kinda game I can play with the family.
@Anti-Matter Plot Twist: The abandoned island has a store called Nook’s Cranny!
The box art sure does give LoU2 and Automata vibes. I'm sure it will be a fine game but those two are some of my favourites I've ever played.
Never really understood the fuss about Kirby but he was fun to play as in Super Smash Bros on the N64.
If it's a great platform game though I'm all for it, love how they've had a resurgence in recent years!
Yeah, a super easy 30 fps platform, can‘t wait
What exactly is there "The Last of Us 2"- or "Nier Automata"-like?
Tokyo Jungle was my first thought when I saw the trailer.
@Max_the_German maybe the LoU comparison is because there will be a grounded difficulty and you can eat dogs 😂
@MichaelP the box art, you could put Ellie or 2B on that cover no problem. It shares a similar looking world!
I bet this will come out in April, right after Triangle Strategy and Rune Factory 5. Looking forward to it!
Nice so even kirby has gone full post apocalypse. Ha. I wonder what to say if the kids ask "Hey where have all the humans gone that lived here?". "To the rapture, kiddo, to the rapture..."
@valharian Buff Dedede will smash Waddle Dee with golf club. Kirby's Dream Course 2.5 confirmed.
@anoyonmus The Last of Us Part II had a large open map that looks similar in aesthetic. Because it was the largest and most open map, it was also one of the more memorable moments from the game.
I personally think it's just that there aren't too many games that are post-apocalyptic, yet also lush and green. NieR also comes to mind, but generally most of the post-apocalyptic games are all dreary, ugly and brown.
And it two things are only remotely alike, people will compare them.
@Octane If you think it through, when all humans are gone, things ought to be better, if you just wait long enough. I once read even the largest cities won't be around for much longer than 1.000 years after people have died off. It's an interesting thought, especially if you think about all the "out of place artifacts" that are found around the globe, we could have been at a similar stage in our development a hundred times over and always botched it and started anew a few thousand years later...
... make sure to leave a time capsule for the people after us, just in case we're again due for an extinction event...
If Kirby can transform into a mech then this game would be mega cool - planet robobot was very fun
@Max_the_German Played it, have you? 🙄
Looks very uninspired and bland, much like the game itself...
@Octane
People are largely illiterate on the history of this medium, you’ll probably find more than a few saying those games invented the throughly beaten in the ground trope of “in a zombie apocalypse the real monsters are people!!!!!111”. I’m just gonna wait until one of the Kirby devs namedrops Tokyo Jungle as a primary source for inspiration.
It's about what I expected the box art to look like. Hopefully this will be a fun game to play, I'm looking forward to it.
I think the trailer and aesthetics look great, personally. Let’s wait to be critical until any of us have actually played the game huh?
Finally, a Western box where Kirby isn't angry. At long last the puff is able to be his authentic self outside Japan. It's about time.
This'll be my first Kirby game since the NES due to the post apocalyptic landscape
@Octane Enslaved: Odyssey To The West also had a similar look but that should be no surprise since it was the same environmental artist from The Last of Us.
"Kirby should have been 3D since 64"
Look Kirby is coming in late to 3D for a variety of reasons ppl need to acknowledge. 1st Kirby is second party and not first, 2nd after Sakurai left, HAL had different directors scramble and work on Kirby games but nothing quite stuck until Shinya Kumazaki finally brought back elements fans knew were a big part of Kirby. Finally powers with moves and an acknowledgement of what makes Kirby, Kirby. Finally stability. 3rd they have been working on 3d since the GameCube. Kirby is not Mario and its not just a matter of porting an avatar into 3d that moves well but one that also inhales and uses a multitude of abilities. This all had to be translated in 3d in a way that felt right and like the franchise.
Anyway I'm very excited it's finally happening but I understand all the nonsense that went on before and the fact HAL has been attempting this for years. I'm glad to see it looks promising and like a good interpretation of the experience in 3D
Not too shabby. It isn't my favorite box art in the world, (I like Metroid Dread's more for example) but it is pretty solid and gives a decent idea of what to expect out of the game. I am not an enormous Kirby fan though so unless this gets high praise all around, I probably won't be playing it. The last Kirby game I played was Kirby Star Allies and I didn't enjoy it a whole lot.
E10+? What is it with Kirby and getting ESRB E10+ ratings? That's probably more hardcore than Mario.
Anyway, here's hoping Kirby isn't the only playable character here. I'd like to control Meta Knight or King Dedede in DDD.
@ModdedInkling If that's true, I'm gonna assume Ado and Adeleine, the painters from Dream Land 3 and 64, come from here. There's also the aforementioned Shiver Land, the planet on Kirby 64 that looks like a frozen Earth on the map.
@Dpullam I’m in much the same boat, I’ve played my share of Kirby games and I’ve never been able to get into them, outside of Kirby’s Epic Yarn which was great but, as we all know by now, wasn’t even originally a Kirby title.
I tried Star Allies briefly and really didn’t enjoy how mindless it was. This, however, looks great. In fact, it’s the first Kirby game I can ever say I’m genuinely excited for. Love the aesthetic, love 3D platformers and the trailer totally sold me. Looking forward to seeing more of it and hearing some critical opinions later down the road
Needs Angry Eyebrows(TM).
This game looks fantastic! Can't wait!
When it releases I look forward to the upcoming article titled "Nintendo's Switch Exclusive Kirby and the Forgotten Land Is Already Being Emulated On PC", since that's apparently how the news works here now.
The only Kirby game I ever bought was star allies and I regret it. But this one seems too good to le regret again
I have never bought a Kirby game but this one might loop me in. I like the thought of a playing around in a forgotten land. One of my favorite games on the switch is Lifeless Planet. I really got into the story and actually liked the walking simulator concept. I work all the time so it was nice to play something for 15 minutes at a pop and not worrying about dying.
This is hopefully something with a great story and way better control than lifeless planet.
Game looks amazing! Can't wait!!
I have never played a Kirby game, but this one looks intriguing! Not to say previous Kirby games do not, I have just never looked into playing any. Does anyone recommend some good ones I could start with in the meantime?
@Saturos1 yes!
The classic Kirby games is Kirby Superstar. It’s the series equivalent to a mario 3 or super Metroid. Very influential on the modern titles and on smash brothers! You can play it with the Switch online service. Many ppl seem to enjoy the remake even more and that one is on DS.
I also highly recommend Planet Robobot on the 3ds! Best of the modern titles and generally favored by fans as the best of Director Shinya Kumazaki’s works. Cool sub games, fun campaign with a robot mechanic that’s a blast to just mess with. Very tough True Arena boss rush challenge with new version of bosses including another part to the final boss.
Ppl also seem to really like Return to Dreamland on Wii so I’ll recommend that too. It’s pretty good too.
Also I recommend the NES game. It feels like an NES game but still impressive for its time and worth experiencing. Just some nice history and still charming.
Triple Deluxe is good too and cheap now for 20 bucks. On 3ds.
@MajorasLapdog I will say that after your comment, I did decide to give the announcement trailer another chance and I ended up liking it more the second time. I am cautious, but optimistic thanks to your viewpoint. I am still unsure on my opinion on the game as whole but your words have helped so thanks!
@dBackLash I love when people condemn games and entire fandoms based off of one single, short, first-look trailer. Makes them seem really intelligent and open minded.
Nice enough. Game looks really interesting
One of my most anticipated game of 2022
@BAN I don't condemn anything, I just think the trailer looks really underwhelming. I hope the game is gonna be great.
I actually really like the look of this game.
@Kirby_Girl thank you so much for the recommendations and guidance!! I will give some of these a try now
@valharian I hope it does
@dBackLash Yea. No one cares
Can't wait to see what eldritch horror you fight as the real final boss
This is wrong, this is all wrong. Kirby needs to be mad! As he has been in previous NA boxart.
Kirby needs to be louder, angrier, and have access to a time machine.
@Digimon24 You do, otherwise you wouldn't respond
@Zag_Man I'm guessing what they showed in the trailer is the first area in the entire game, built to teach you controls more than anything else.
@Zag_Man Kirby is an entry level series with the hardest content being hidden or post game such as the True Arena or Soul Melter EX mode. I'm not counting on this new game suddenly cranking up the temperature to 100. I mean I just beat Dread over the weekend and like challenging games but still love Kirby games. However I can't recommend them to ppl who aren't into its jazz-like freedom and chill easy main campaigns. Its not for everyone. Kind of like how there are animal crossing fans who play AC for hours and ppl who play ac for a few days, consider it boring because "Nothing to do" and just stop immediately. It's either your thing or not but this being a new game i guess you can wait and see or try a demo.
The new screen looks like water park / baby park.... I'm convinced this is the apocalyptic Mario kart universe! 😁😂
No Angry Kirby again :/
Well good that it's being compared to Odyssey, because that's what it should aim for...
I just want to know where exactly Kirby is.
