Super Monkey Ball and its sequel were a mainstay for many who owned a GameCube, and Super Monkey Ball Deluxe was a similar treat for owners of other systems. SEGA has gone and remade the latter (which was just the first and second game with some added extras) from the ground up in the form of Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania, and we've chuffing played it. Jurassic Park!
Being Monkey Ball aficionados ourselves, we're going to be far more sensitive to the little changes that separate Banana Mania from its source material, and whilst there are some twiddly bits here and there, such as marginally tweaked physics and a weird jolt of speed at the end of the ramp in Monkey Target, on the whole the package is shaping to to be a very good time. Hundreds of levels, 12 minigames with numerous options, a whole host of unlockable characters and modes — it's really a bountiful offering.
Make sure you watch that video up there with your eyes, and listen to it with your ears, as from the look of the timecode there's a lot that we cover – we should know, we were there – and let us know in the comments below if you're keen to get rolling some simians.

This is looking cool! cant wait to snag it
I have high hopes. All footage seen so far shows a game that's learned from Banana Blitz HD's mistakes.
I can't watch it right now, but can you play the puzzle stages in multiplayer? Not at the same time, but the traditional taking turns method? Bannana blitz took that out and ruined the series for me after that.
A Partridge Amongst The Pigeons.
You have no idea how happy I am to hear Super Monkey Ball 2 is more like Super Monkey Ball 1! Can't wait for this.
My first Monkey Ball game and I'm quite excited to try it!
I bet you guys had a ball..
I will buy this on both PC and Switch.
I remember these guys saying great things about Baldo...Do not make any purchasing decisions based on their reviews if you're really careful with your money
Awesome, can’t wait to give the video a watch when work is done!
@Alztru The NintendoLife review of Baldo literally begins with the word "excrutiating" and the review score was 4/10.
It's classic monkey ball. Cannot wait
Its so cool to see now games from N64, Cube, Wii and 3DS coming out on Switch even playstation games (crash) are now playable on the system. and maby later GTA.
@GrailUK Every time I see stuff on this game I get hyped for you! I hope you enjoy it!
NINJA APPROVES MONKEY BALLS (um)
Looks like they butchered monkey target
@BloodNinja Oh, I am sure I will. I haven't seen anything heartbreaking yet
Looks and sounds great to me from all that!
What’s the deal with the change from widescreen to old-screen?
Just a random game option?
So, it's not broken? Score! I'm shocked.
So I've only seen Monkey Target levels from SMB. Are those all there are? Because the Target levels from SMB2 were much better.
Back of the net!
Can you disable the wheel of danger in Monkey Target? It's nitpicky but this was my favorite way to play with friends.
Tweaked physics?? Blasphemy. Give me Toshihiro Nagoshi’s pure vision any day. The GameCube analogue stick’s so perfectly tuned to the game - for this particular title I can’t imagine another stick matching it. Thank god I recollected for the cube & became a CRT collector.
EDIT: I’m a purist, I’m sure it’ll be awesome for 99% of players
I am just wondering hiw difficult the main levels will be to control without the octagonal indents of the Gamecube controller.
I’m a little hesitant on this one now with the physics changed. The originals were perfect. That launching off the ramp on targets even if you just barely putter off the stage is ridiculous.
@TYRANACLES @andykara2003 I mean to some extent they kind of have to tweak it to adapt to the modern control sticks. Things can go wrong if they don't.. Look at Mario 64, it was designed around the stiff N64 stick and when I play it on Switch it feels too slippery on the looser control sticks we have on it. A little adaptation for sticks without directional ridges doesn't have to be a bad thing.
Is there still time for them to fix the issues if enough reviewers complain?
is it me or does it look graphically much less attractive than the GC versions?
@Johnno137426 smell my cheese!
I'm disappointed to hear that monkey target is the way it is in this new version of the game. Even just seeing the video I really noticed the lack of vibrancy in the runway ramp. aren't the smokestack towers more white in Monkey Target in SMB 2?
I'm also happy to hear about all the unlockables. I'll probably really enjoy playing through the game. If they would add a 120fps mode on PS5 I would probably even double dip to have it portable and extra smooth.
This has got me wondering... Does this new release have both Monkey Target 1 and 2? Or are they lumped together somehow as just "Monkey Target"? I really like both a lot, and would love to have both available. I'll probably like this new version of classic Monkey Ball games, but I'm realizing I should probably buy SMB 1 and 2 and just play them on Wii since I want exactly that!
Dan Dan Dan Dan Dan Dan Dan Dan Dan Dan . . . . Dan Dan Dan Dan . . . . Dan Dan Dan Dan! Xxx
@Dimey that fog… maybe it was the same before
Yes Alex, but how do you feel about the pedestrianisation of Norwich city centre?
Cant wait to see purists whine about this remake like every remake in existence.
