It's been an exciting week if you're a fan of Lego and Nintendo's Super Mario series - with the reveal of the Super Mario 64 '?' Block, but it seems some older sets could soon be retiring.
As spotted by VGC, the Lego's UK store will seemingly be retiring three Super Mario sets from Wave 1. They include the Boomer Bill Barrage Expansion Set, Whomp’s Lava Trouble Expansion Set and the Builder Mario Power-Up Pack.
Once the stock is gone, that's likely it then - which is pretty standard when it comes to Lego sets. It's not clear when the rest of the first wave will officially retire, but Lego is currently well underway with its third Super Mario wave.
Wave 1 of the Super Mario sets has proven to be a huge success for Lego - becoming one of the company's most successful themes to date. If you haven't checked out the latest Super Mario Lego reveal, be sure to see our previous post. It'll be arriving this October for £159.99 / $169.99.
Did you end up getting any of the above Wave 1 sets? Leave a comment down below.

Mario's dying a second time? R.I.P
Have the other two but missing Bonzai Bill Barrage so I'll need to get on that
So Nintendo policy in Lego too, huh?
Well, my daughter and my nephew and niece have a couple sets and I gotta say they played them twice or thrice out of curiosity and after that the sets began collecting dust. Sadly this is what I feared that would happen when they first announced the Lego Mario line. It's certainly a limited concept when it comes to actually play it. A couple laps triggering sounds and then what? A thought I had as a grumpy grown up, but apparently 4 to 7 year old kids feel the same.
I love Lego and Mario, but have close to zero interest in Lego Super Mario. Not likely I'll buy any of these sets. The ? Block is more my speed, but in that price range there are easily half a dozen other sets I'd buy first. Having slept on the Corner Garage since its release, I now have to try and buy it before it retires, and my next big set after that will probably be the Discovery space shuttle.
I see these as more collectibles for adults than toys for kids.
My children want them but they are too expensive. And they will no doubt be even more in the future. It’s best to keep them boxed and wait for their prices to increase.
@Moroboshi876 nothing to do with nintendo policy. Lego discontinues their sets after 6 to 24 months with the exception of some major sets like the death star. They’ve done this for as long as they exist:
@darkswabber Didn't know. Well, in this case it's a coincidence with some of the Bowser era policies in Nintendo.
Will there ever be a "LEGO Nintendo" store?
As @darkswabber noted, Lego introduces new sets and retires oldest (6 to 24 month old ones) continuously. It would be non sustainable to keep introducing new sets and never to stop manufacturing old ones.
Also for anyone curious: they rarely do significant sales (15% discounts are a huge deal) and once they go out of production, even the used sets skyrocket in price anywhere you look. So if you waiting on one of these to go on sale, buy now or never.
@Moroboshi876 “Bowser” era policies? Gimme a break. Anything gaming being discontinued is coming from Japan. NOA doesn’t make those kind of decisions.
@Tharsman I see sets going 20% off (USA) all the time. Haven’t been following the Mario ones, but Star Wars and Marvel stuff out for 4-6 months will get knocked down at brick and mortar retailers/Amazon.
@Res462 some store might do a sale on minor sets, but its very very rare (not unheard of) to see such a sale on any set over $80 MSRP.
There are plenty of sets I regret not getting because I kept waiting for "a decent sale"
Inevitable but still unfortunate. Much as amiibo scalpers are annoying, it's nothing compared to how Lego sets skyrocket in price and never get a reprint.
No thanks, I don't want to buy overpriced pieces of plastic...
@Res462 I don't know, but it's too much of a coincidence that he arrived and the time-limited stuff trend started, America must have some kind of influence, right?
@Curbie Actually some sets are updated and reintroduced later. And some are redesigned.
@sanderev true but that's an exception not a rule and should never be expected.
@Tharsman
I guess it depends what you’re looking at.
Star Wars stuff, with the exception of exclusives like the Razor Crest, seem to get marked down across the board. Kyle Ren’s shuttle is $104 on Amazon. Poe’s X-Wing was down to $75. The Millennium Falcon was $128. AT AT, $141. I’ve even seen the UCS Falcon for $50-100 off MSRP on Zavvi.
@Moroboshi876
No. Those games are discontinued worldwide, not just in NA.
@Res462 Not what I was saying, but whatever. Let's end the off topic.
