It's been over four years since it was announced and with no meaningful updates since, but Bayonetta 3 was given the big finale in today's Nintendo Direct. In typical PlatinumGames style the trailer starts off vague and drops a tease related to Astral Chain, before everyone's favourite Witch makes her entrance.
As you can see in the trailer above it has a lot of the hallmarks of its predecessors, including huge battles between skyscraper-sized demons and more fast-paced combos on the ground. There are also some snippets of big set piece moments, which are also so crucial to the series.
It only has a vague 2022 release window, but it's still pleasing to see that it's heading into the home stretch of development.
Let us know what you think of the Bayonetta 3 trailer in the comments!

I'm a big fan of Astral Chain - so when they did the fake-out to make us think it was a new Astral Chain... that really hurt.
EDIT: I'm happy for the Bayo fans though
One of these days I'll go back and finish the first game...
The excitement I feel for Bayonetta 3 is not appropriate to share here 😉 But suffice it to say this was a show stopping blockbuster of an announcement, and the game looks as incredible as Bayonetta herself ❤❤
They actually made me think it was an Astral Chain game the sods but so happy Bayonetta is back
@Aurumonado I thought it was a crossover of bayonetta and astral chain
We thought the advanced Pokémon Sword/Shield game would be Gun, but I present:
Pokémon Bayonetta.
That was a good Astral Chain fakeout.
Don't worry Astral fans, you'll get your sequel soon.
wait does this confirm that Astral and Bayonetta is in the same univer--
This new Bayonetta looks amazing too. Can't wait for it, I'll be playing the previous games in the meantime.
@Aurumonado I would have been disappointed if it hadn't already been more or less spoiled that Bayonetta was going to be shown.
I cried. Yes that’s all I have to say.
Now you can all stop pestering Platinum and Kamiya constantly lmao.
It looks fine. I'm sure the Platinum fans will enjoy it. Glad the people waiting for Bayo 3 are finally eating.
Yeah, don't mess with me Platinum, I know a Bayonetta enemy when I see one. lol
No comment here. I just want to buy and play it as soon as possible. Still, it would be cool to see a new Astral Chain game or a crossover of sorts.
This is a fake trailer, a few people on here and on the internet as a whole said it was cancelled/vaporware.
Seriously though, game is looking great! Yet another example that games take several years to make and with patience, the wait will pay off.
@Aurumonado Pretty much this. Astral Chain wasn't perfect, but I would happily play a sequel.
Bayonetta's new look is fantastic, though the guns look too chunky to me. That said, I still haven't found the motivation to play through the first 2 yet so...
Can't wait! Really enjoyed the previous games.
Also liked the Astral Chain sequel trolling.
Graphics-wise, this looks average at best
They got me with the Astral chain fake out but still. Like I said if Nintendo wasn't stressing, nobody else should have been stressing.
It looks amazing! The natural progression of controlling the demons similar to astral chain looks like a lot of fun. Can't wait, it's going to be glorious.
I’m liking the new look.
Now I still need to finish Bayonetta 1.
And it’s been so long since I last played it that I would have forgotten the controls... again, and will have to play the game from scratch... again...
Everyone is talking about the Astral Chain fakeout, but they also opened with the dog from the Project G.G. trailer lol
Not personally interested but it's good to finally see the game. It's funny how people thought it was vaporware. Bayo's voice did sound different to me, though
I can't believe it's almost here. Totally looks worth the wait.
I saw the P on the billboards and knew it was Platinum, but they still managed to surprise me, fool me, and make me excited for TWO games. Also, I love that whole new game, new looks thing they do, and the fact that the huge monsters now seem to be actually playable.
Edit: I did doubt for a second, that it could be a Devil's Third remake or sequel, and even that would have actually gotten me excited, but it didn't fit with the P billboards.
@BlackenedHalo has to run at a smooth fps so that's fine.
I'm not that into Bayonetta but I'm happy the fans finally got a trailer
I've never played a Bayonetta game but the preview was both impressive and very very confusing. 👀
Hideki can fi ally sigh with relief
Looked great! Who was that at the end?
Really thought it was going to be Battlefield at first, good thing it wasn't.
I love her design this time around, The hair tho 🤩.
@Kilamanjaro Dante I'm pretty sure.
And I'm here waiting for an article on KOTOR coming to Switch.
You lot are in for a treat. But don't Google the plot or you'll ruin the best reveal in gaming history.
@Aurumonado Absolutely the same here, I was watching it with friends and I was screaming over Teams, "it's Astral Chain 2 omg omg". Then Bayo just swooped in and I was ok ok, you trolled us good. lol. Still so excited for Bayo 3. Maybe they are teasing Astral Chain 2. Still holding out hope for Akira Twins as final Smash character.
Highlight of the Direct, no question.
Gamers these days when they're grandparents: You young'uns change clothes like Bayonetta changed hairstyles! Waves cane
Am I the only one who thought Bayonetta 3 looked straight up bad?
@MS7000 The first Astral Chain sold well so Nintendo will probably give us a second one with a bigger budget so they can improve upon the gameplay... like making the sidequests more interesting.
God I love how much she resembles the C*ck Destroyers.
Her hair looks amazing and the little Astral Chain goof was too good. Pumped!
By the way, is it weird that I recognised it as Bayonetta, or at least a Platinum game, almost immediately? I can’t describe their graphical style, but they have a graphical style that is instantly recognisable.
It's about time! Her new design is spicy. I'm a fan.
@Steel76 5 years is very normal for a game this size.
@roboshort Well Nintendo buying the IP off of Platinum gives me hope for a sequel, but I get the feeling we won't be seeing a sequel for a few years.
Start of the trailer, I was all excited and was like "this is totally bayo 3", then they did the Astral Chain fakeout and I was literally jumping for joy thinking it was Astral Chain 2 (I really prefer that game now) then Bayo showed up and I couldn't even be mad.
Brilliant trailer after nearly four years.
@Steel76 SMT5: "yeah, imagine that"
This trailer almost all but confirms we will see another Astral Chain game in the future.
How come no one is talking about the mysterious figure at the end?
Finally it lives. And it looks amazing. Can't wait to get my hands on it
Why did she have so much clothes on lol? Her silly hypersexualization I found hilarious. In 1 and 2 she was incredibly camp and cheesy and her hyersexualization was hilariously ridiculous. It was a weird juxtaposition as on one hand you had the best 3rd person action/beat em up gameplay, alongside the utter ridiculousness of her character and those funny close up shots mid battle. I hope they are not going fr a PG rating!
Little Cereza looks stunning. This is all I wanted, Nintendo.
@Steel76 Something tells me they were going for a more ambitious game/design in the beginning but had to scale back (design wise) due to Switch's lack of computing power.
Edit: Especially if a 60fps target is a must.
Little Cereza loooks amazing! Makes sense that its not hellena taylor voice since its not the "real" bayonetta we're all used to see.
Coulndt be more excited than now😭😭
@Bizzyb @Snatcher @Kilamanjaro It looked kind of like the protagonist from Scalebound to me.
@CupidStunt Because it's not the bayonetta we're all used to know 😊. Unfortunately our bayonetta either is stuck in a time-loop as both games suggest or she is actually dead😭😭.
Some people just don't know when to be realistic. For crying out loud switch isn't as powerful as a ps4. Why do you want a groundbreaking graphic for a hybrid-console. This is becoming boring now. If you want such buy a PC or a gaming console.
@The_Pixel_King you're the only one. I love what I see.
I have a lot of questions regarding the graphics and tech, but it is undoubtely looking intense with all the giant summonings
Best part of the direct for sure.
The game looks great and the demon battles are amazing.
The only thing I miss is the old voice actress.
@ISoleilI That actually makes sense! With all the time travelling stuff, they might add alternative timelines and what not, so the Cereza we'll be playing in Bayo 3 won't be the actual same one as Bayo 1 and 2. Maybe the very first trailer showed her death!
Based on what @ISoleilI mentioned, what if the strange dude at the end is an "alternate universe" traveler, whose goal is to kill every single variation of Cereza?
@DomGC
I'm literally the opposite.
If it had turned out to be Astral Chain 2 at that point I would have lept around with joy, doused in the tears of Bayonetta fans.
As it stands, I also enjoy Bayonetta so couldn't be mad.
Was that Dante at the end? Or maybe Virgil?
@marandahir If you look closely, kinda looks like a feminine figure.
@PikaPhantom glad other people noticed the Project G.G. easter egg hahahaha
Man this trailer toyed around with me a lot!
Wow, I know we've been expecting it, but seeing it here was still both surprising and amazing.
@Lugazz I still have my doubts, it looks like another alternate "Bayonetta". Actually, I think that we're going to see something far more complex than what we're used to
Day 1, that’s all I have to say about this. Oh, and loving the new hairstyle.
After analyzing the trailer, they showed us so much in so little time. Beyond hyped.
The trailer had everything indicating it was Platinum’s Bayonetta
The 101 over Shibuya
The P
The Akita barking
The Jets
Hold the phone! who is that at the end? is that Dante!?
Not a Bayonetta fan at all. I knew the last bit would be Bayonetta but was really hoping for Zelda or Metroid prime 4.
Insanely hyped as the first two are my favourite games ever so yeah.
For those wondering her new look is clearly Bayo being more Cereza now as this is Cereza but grown up.
Notes from the dev's
"You finally got a trailer no shut the ***** up"
@The_Pixel_King yes.
@The_Pixel_King Gameplay bad or graphics bad?
Game play looked great, Bayonetta with maybe a little Astral Plane and W101 set kaiju pieces.
The graphics looked PS2, but not in a good way. I'm hoping it was just the live stream losing it at the end. That happens to me a lot w/ these live shows, stream looks like garbage, trailer looks better later, game looks even better still.
Also those EDF army guys aren't important to the game and they made them look like PS2 characters on purpose. I'm not worried, they both shined on Wii U. And if it's Halloween next year they still have 13 more months.
@jpfan1989 I was wondering the same thing.
Yea this direct was looking pretty dire to me but Bayo saved it for me...too bad I have to wait another year for it. Lets see how much polish they can add to it.
@WallyWest Same here but it's japan and wanting to turn everything into idols nowadays.
Was it just me or did the image quality look subpar? Maybe I’ve been spoiled by the PS5
Bayonetta 3 was the only highlight from the show. Actraiser was the only other that got my attention, especially since I never played that series before.
Well, I guess I'm back to being excited after being let down direct after direct lol
@The_Pixel_King something seemed off about it. Not a lot of personality maybe? Idk.
@CupidStunt It could be because it's an M-rated game and they're not allowed to show stuff like violence or nudity or something. Kinda like how the Mii costumes in Smash that are from M-rated games are just called by their name and not their franchise.
@rjejr
I agree that the graphics look old and bad, but they're not THAT bad.
It's more like they just used the exact same engine from Bayo 2, which was a Wii U game and had similar power to the PS3 and the Xbox 360. Methinks you forget how bad the PS2 really looked in comparison.
It also makes a lot of sense. Bayo is a performance heavy franchise, and the Switch doesn't handle a lot of things going on at once much better than the Wii U does, nor is its graphical engine that much better. But if you seriously think this looks like GameCube or PS2 graphics, then you have no clue what you're talking about.
@PikaPhantom I was wondering where that dog was from! Thank you.
@CharlieGirl I completed the first game on both PS3 and Wii U.
Sucked hard on PS3 because of constantly lag and endless loading even from HDD.
@Tyranexx I need to mentor some kids so I can say that.
Maybe it’s the time between games. I just didn’t like what I saw. It did nothing to make we want to play that game. Maybe the next showing will be better for me at least.
Bayonetta 3 looks meh in this trailer, but i know it will be better than this.
Gonna buy it on day 1.
In fact Bayonetta 3 were the reason i bought Switch in the first place.
@nessisonett This comment K.O.’d me hahahaha
@jpfan198 Not even a Devil May Cry fan. But that’s what I thought as well.
@Ryu_Niiyama Not a bad idea! I already subject my coworkers to the occasional obscure gaming reference. May as well start them young.
Cool about time
Feels like for ages been waiting for some futage
That's gotta be Virgil from DmC at the end. Looked up a photo to refresh and it's a spitting image. Wonder how they'll mix it in? Probably an alternate playable character cameo is my guess. With super light references of how he's there.
Nintendo really said NO SEX.
For me this was the saving grace of the direct , also love my astral chain , hope we get a 2.
Seeing this game in action made me really want a Godzilla game.
@marandahir PS2 and GameCube had some of the best graphics ever. Both those consoles are actually the last revolution in gaming graphics, it's been all incremental since then. Wii was 2 GameCubes duct taped together, Wii U was just HD Wii, and Switch is just a portable Wii U. PS2 to PS3 added HD, PS3 to PS4 hardly added anything, PS5 adds 4k.
Starfox Adventures is one of the best looking games of all time, it took a couple of generations of new consoles to make it look bad. (On an SD tv.) Jak & Daxter is my favorite game of all time, on my favorite console of all time, so I know what those graphics look like as well.
Watching that B3 footage live on my built in YouTube app on my 75" 4k tv, well it didn't blow me away anything like playing God of War on my PS2 in 2005.
Am I worried? No. Livestream YouTube is not going to compare to a finished Switch game a year from now. But when I was watching it did I think it looked really bad? Yeah, I did.🤷
@Aurumonado I think the fake out was a hint that Astral Chain 2 is coming, a few of those monsters at the start looked just like Astral Chain style and they were leased like in Astral Chain
@Trmn8r I thought that too but I'm pretty sure it's the kid who can shape shift into a hamster from Bayo 2 all grown up. But Bayo looks younger which is a contradiction. Also the different voice artist makes me think. Why get rid of such a good original voice artist? I think the original voice artist is still in the game and the 2 time lines converge
@CupidStunt This your first Direct? Directs always cut the mature content from the trailers for M-rated games.
Anyway, thank God for 60fps. Astral Chain on 30fps was a terrible decision
@Aurumonado New Astral Chain already would be weird considering they showed nothing from Bayonetta 3 until 4 years after reveal.
@KirbysAdventure 30 FPS shouldn't exist today.
60 FPS were common already in 1990's in 3D Games.
Even Commodore 64... 38 years ago with 1.Mhz CPU ran games at 50hz/60hz.
@rjejr
Correcting some errors here.
Xbox One X got native 4K games since 2017, so it's nothing new at all on a console.
Same old console can also run 4K UHD Discs. Even newest AC Valhalla runs at 4K on this old console.
The last revolution in consoles were Sega Dreamcast.
GameCube weren't much improved over Dreamcast which launched in 1998, exactly 3 years before GameCube.
You are mentioning Starfox Adventures, but ignoring Rare's "Kameo - Elements of Power" in 4K/60 on the 4 year old Xbox One X (Launched in 2017). It were the last ever masterpiece from Rare.
Kameo started as a GameCube game, but became a Xbox 360 launch exclusive.
Kameo runs at native 4K/60 on Xbox One X in a free upgrade.
Kameo were released in 2005/2006. Still one of the best looking games and have lovely music too.
Video of it here. Note that YouTube overcompresses videoes, so it's not crystal clear graphics like it's on console.

@Ventilator Dreamcast came out famously on 9.9.99 (late 1999 not 1998). GameCube was November 2001.
@SupahM3tr0yd
JP: November 27, 1998
GameCube launched 3 years after Dreamcast then with not much improvement on hardware.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dreamcast
@Ralizah we’ve been fasting for so long…
@rjejr Yep, I was referring to the graphics. I’m sure the game will play great, but visually, at least to me, it didn’t look at all appealing.
@Bizzyb I saw that and discussed it with a friend. Looks like Virgil from Devil May Cry or another incarnation of Dante.
Not sure I can understand the graphics complaints - this is probably about as good as you will get for a fast-paced action game on Switch that targets (and largely seems to hit) 60 FPS and is a year or so away from launch.
Game looks fun as hell and its great to hear that it is indeed alive after a near 4-year wait for more info since it was first announced.
So... I have at least three months to finally get around to playing the second game. Challenge accepted!
Not sure which I am hyped for more: Bayo 3 or the Astral Chain tease. Why choose when you can have both, yes, please!
@Aurumonado I like both (I guess Astral Chain a tad more) but I'm just so pogged for this!
@westman98 2 things about the graphics I mentioned early.
1. I think my YT may have hiccupped, it happens from time to time during these long live streams. And really my cable company sucks, I pay for 300 but randomly get 12 or 2. So I think that may have happened, haven't researched it yet, was going to last night but watched the first 2 episodes of Foundation that popped up a day early. You want to see beautiful graphics, watch that.
2. Vid started w/ some PS2 level army men. Anybody used to seeing next gen military personnel expect a certain level of realism, and they certainly weren't that. Nobody knows what Kirby would like in 4k to compare it to, or Chocobo Racing, or all those 3DS looking games - Disney is a straight port I think - but gamers know what realistic army guys look like for over a decade now. And they don't look like that.
@Ventilator Thanks for all of that.
GameCube, Dreamcast and PS2 are all the same generation, the last big leap. And while some of my favorite games are on Dreamcast - Skies of Arcadia and Grandia 3 - it wasn't really b/c of the graphics, it was b/c of the gameplay. Though first time I ever saw Dreamcast it was walking by a store window and NFL 2K was playing and I did a double take b/c I thought it was a real NFL game. So I do know it had great graphics. I never owned a Saturn or Genesis so I never measured the leap. I had a PS1 so I could really appreciate the PS2 graphics. Starfox just looked like a movie, didn't really matter what system it was on.
I only played Kameo on an X1 a couple of years ago so it really doesn't matter to me. But it does kind of prove my point of games having great graphics back then, so thanks for agreeing with me.😉
@The_Pixel_King Just out of curiosity have you watched it not live yet? Wondering if it looks any better not streaming live. Not those army men, they were trash, I still think purposely so. Should be up on Switch by now but YT might be better.
Finally a trailer! Lol at all the people who said: "Look, a Astral chains 2 teaser!". Sure, the mascot is from Astral chains (and it could mean a sequel is in the works), but the first thing I was thinking when I saw the dog: "That robot/kaju game they where showing a teaser-trailer a while back!"
Back to the trailer, it was more of a teaser and initially looked very bad. And overall graphically it didn't blow me away. What we mostly saw was kaju battles between Bayonetta and enemies (that looked pretty sweet though) and a battle in a train. Her hair looks more like what she had as a child, I prefer her short spicy hair though. And the character at the end: Is that the hero from recent Devil may cry games? Nah, its probably just the card boy from Bayonetta 2 grown up, or a new character.
@Orpheus79V Hmm....does P* own those characters....🤔
@finalstan Two of my favorite Platinum franchises just happen to be Switch/Nintendo exclusives....how about that😄 (Three if you counted W101)
I am curious about these new enemies. Ceramic armor on the legs and arms is an angel trait in the previous games. While the fleshiness and dark colourations are demon traits. The Blues and neon turquoise are new. The text in the deep blue is also different. I am curious if this is a new alien (literally or just unknown) faction or if some kind of demon/angel hybrid.
