Despite not appearing in yesterday's Nintendo Indie World Showcase, release dates for both Spelunky and Spelunky 2 have cropped up on Switch eShop — in PAL regions, at least!
As spotted by Vooks, both games are apparently set for launch on Switch eShop on 26th August according to the 'Planned Release Date', with the first of Derek Yu's celerated indie roguelike platformers priced at £8.99 / 9,99€ and the 2020 sequel available for £17.99 / 19,99€.
Here's a cheeky pair of screengrabs from the EU Switch eShop on our console:
There's no sign of the games on the NA Switch eShop at the time of writing, but it's surely only a matter of time before they appear there, too.
Excited to see the indie developers bringing the heat to Switch this August? Confounded as to why this wasn't included in the Indie World Showcase? Let us know below.

Weird omission from the Indie World direct, in that case.
Although, if I'm being honest, I kinda already thought they were on the Switch. The device has become such a pervasive indie game machine that it's always weird when you see one that isn't on the system yet.
I haven't played either but was keen to try - would it be best to start with the original or just pick up the sequel?
Still just absolutely do not get the love for this one. Everyone has that one game and mine is Spelunky, could never get into it!
Same screenshot twice G
Edit: Love the contrasting yet perfectly complimentary duo of screenshots on display
Was hoping this might get a mention in the Indie World Showcase as we hadn't heard about it for a while but it just randomly popping up in the eShop works too. Haven't played either of them before so will probably start with the first. Been craving for roguelites lately so nice timing for me.
@Bloops Naaaaaah, you're seeing things.
@Teksetter definitely get the first. I think it's one of the best games ever made. I haven't played the sequel yet but opinions seem mixed, especially from people who love the first one
Day one buy. There's nothing like this game.
Or these games. Though I haven't tried the sequel yet.
Is Spelunky 1 worth anything if you can get the second one instead ?
@nessisonett
I absolutely had the same experience with it on the 360. I bounced off of it several times. However, I continue to be insanely attracted to it for some reason. I am convinced that I should be able to get into it this time, so I am definitely picking it up again. It's kind of strange.
@Tibob I played a lot of Spelunky 1 but only played Spelunky 2 briefly, so I can't say authoritatively which is better, but they are very similar. I'd recommend looking into the differences between the two and just getting the one that seems more interesting. There's no need to buy both right away, but you might want the other one someday in the future when you've gotten really good at the game and just want new environments, items, and such to play around with.
Wait a moment, Spelunky 1 is rated PEGI 18? That's so weird.
@Teksetter
Definitely start with the original. It's quite streamlined in its systems, whereas the sequel adds so much stuff it can be a bit bewildering - I still struggle with it after completing the original via the secret world.
If you take to Spelunky 1, you've got the joy of knowing there's an even more wild sequel to try. If you don't, you're down less cash.
Myself, I bought the original on X360 and PS4, and the sequel on PS4, and I'll still be buying these. Two of the greatest games of the last two generations IMO. Utter, utter brilliance.
Honestly, anyone playing these for the first time.... enjoy. I'm jealous.
I don't think I ever got beyond the second level in Spelunkey 1 — I would like to pick it up again, but death did feel very abrupt.
Was hoping be Physical.
I’ve wanted to play these for years; will wait for a physical release (likely via LRG or somesuch).
@EarthboundBenjy I checked both listings earlier and yep, Spelunky 1 is rated 18 for 'simulated gambling'. The latter is rated for 'mild violence'.
This article confused me as I was positive Spelunky HD just released last week. But it's Spelunker I'm thinking about. Is one a spin off of the other?
@SpringDivorce
@Stargazer
Thank you both very much for the advice! It sounds like starting with Spelunky 1 is very much the way to go.
I've been looking forward to trying these games since seeing a a positive review for Spelunky 2 on PS4 last year. The game seemed like such a perfect fit for Switch, I didn't think the wait would be so long!
These were ALL I wanted to hear about yesterday so when they didn't get mentioned or shadow drop I was super bummed. HUGELY stoked to get my hands on these soon!!!
Can’t wait for both of these to live on my switch. I’m wondering the file sizes.
Thank you, Might pick it up some time after sep.
Roguelite and roguelikes are a genre where I only get very select games for and Spelunky is one of them.
I'll hold off getting the Spelunkies for now, might wait for a sale. Monster Train's out next week (Slay the Spire-ish roguelite), so I'm hoping to get super invested into that.
I was waiting for these on switch but now I'm waiting for them on STEAM Deck lol
@SpringDivorce I'm going to get the first then, and then play 2, I played a demo for the first game on the ps3, can't wait!
There will probably never be another game I'll put more time into than I have Spelunky HD 1, it's an amazing platformer with equal to, if not greater than, refined controls compared to ALL 2D Marios. Big statement I know. And for this reason Spelunky 2 coming to Switch practically scares me. It will be game-crack.
I still complete at least one Spelunky 1 Hell Run every month or so just to keep the skills, and my highest score is around $1,700,000. I really want to get a 2 million run someday.
They are coming Aug. 26th in NA as well. This comes courtesy of the official Spelunky World Twitter.
@OorWullie Spelunker is unrelated and imo a vastly inferior game. Spelunky 1 and 2 are masterpieces of the highest calibre.
Never played the first one but got pretty darn into the second. Equal parts mystery and misery. This game wants nothing more than to kick you when you’re down, but there’s just enough in there to keep drawing you back in.
@Teksetter
I bought both of these on PlayStation not too long ago.
As recommended definitely get the first one and if you like it the second later.
Be aware also these are undoubtedly excellent games but I’m not lying when I say they are the hardest games I’ve ever played.
As long as you’re ok with that then it’s fine but for most average gamers progression is slow as you’ll die over and over!
@Hurblyburbly
Thank you for the recommendation! I most definitely will try out Spelunky 1 first, per your advice.
I’ll go in prepared for a challenge!
One of my most anticipated games in 2021, besides Binding of Isaac Repentance and Hollow Knight Silksong
