PM Studios and Endflame have announced that Ikai, an upcoming first-person horror game, will be spooking a Switch near you this October.
Ikai puts you in the shoes of a "defenceless" main character who's entirely incapable of attacking the creepy creatures standing in their way. You have no guns, no swords, no Luigi with a vacuum cleaner – it's just you, them, and no way to fight or run away.
This frightening premise supposedly allows the game to explore "a new sense of horror by making the player face the threats directly by neither fleeing nor attacking." Liking the sound of it? Well, here's a feature list for you:
- FEAR: Experience the horror in first-person by the hand of Japanese spirits, monsters, and yokai.
- EXPLORATION: Wander around a feudal Shinto shrine and explore to unveil the story behind Naoko, the main character.
- DRAWING: Concentrate on drawing protective seals over the strange sounds and events happening around.
- PUZZLES: Pit your wits against the several puzzles that will try to stop you
- STEALTH & RUN: Be silent, do not disturb the evil… Or just run, run away from it all, if you can…
As noted above, Ikai launches on Switch – and other platforms, too – this October.
Will you be keeping an eye out for this one when it arrives later this year? There's no running away from our comment section below.

Aren't fleeing and running away pretty much the same thing?
You can't fight or flee = walking simulator?
A sequel for Ikea?
Another horror game where you sneak and hide from the monsters.
Pass.
I'm so hungry for a proper survival horror game. RE2 was almost that, but the constant pursuit by Mr. X ruined aspects of the exploration for me.
I might give a try, I still hope that Shibito Magire gets a release in west tho
@Ralizah Yeah, that's the only complaint I have about RE2. That guy is a pain in the ass. It'd be a better game without having to run away from him so many times. Otherwise, an excellent game that I play again and again
I love Japan. I love the Japanese language. I love Japanese horror. And I will sure love to see some reviews of this game when it comes out before buying it. Just by the description, I'm not very sure about it
@Ralizah Yeah, I've played a ton of horror games over the years, but being chased by Mr.X in the RE2 remake is the only time a game has given me actual nightmares.
Perhaps you already picked up on this, but I found if you walk as opposed to running around the station, he's far less likely to hone in on your position.
The closest thing we'll ever get to an Eternal Darkness or Fatal Frame horror game on Switch.
@OldManHermit I didn't notice my behavior having any impact on his stalking. I didn't even find him to be particularly scary, since he's easily evaded. It's just annoying. Any time I was getting into the vibes of the environment, or was enjoying exploring a new area, here comes Mr. X to force me to do the run-around until he loses me.
It's an almost perfect evolution of the survival horror genre, with its aggressive enemies, smooth gunplay, puzzles, etc. But modern Capcom feels the need to stick stalkers into every one of their horror games now, and I just don't understand the appeal.
@Ralizah Yeah, they have been doing it a lot haven't they? I guess being pursued by a nigh invulnerable enemy is supposed to make you feel powerless, and thus elicit fear. It usual works for me, but I absolutely agree when you're just trying to get from point A to point B, it can become simply annoying, especially with Mr.X.
This article has really annoyed me because it reminded me that Nintendo owns the license for Project Zero/Fatal Frame and chooses to NOTHING with it. 😡
@Ralizah Yeah, it seems to be this generation's version of Random Encounters — something that utterly kills the fun of taking your time and exploring an area.
Yet another boring slockfest aka Outlast and company. Why is horror getting worse and worse... just like RE 2 and 3 Remake, RE 7 and 8 and now this. I miss the old Alone in the Dark game
Looks neat. Reminds me of Fatal Frame. I guess it depends on the length and price, I'll be keeping an eye on it. I like yokai and Eastern ghost stories.
@Ulanda Alien Isolation?
Side-eying this cause it's not actually made by Japanese devs.
@dluxxx nah... not scary. Just jump scares galore with bullet sponge enemies. No real horror.
@Ulanda haha oh okay. Whatever you say.
@dluxxx that's how I see and feel it, sorry if my answer is not what you like.
@__jamiie well it’s coming to switch now
