Have you ever wanted to take a photo of something with your phone without tapping the screen but didn't want to resort to the timed function? Well, it turns out the Nintendo Switch Joy-Con doubles as a remote shutter.
Yes, as demonstrated by Byotan on the Nintendo subreddit, you can use your Joy-Con to take photos with your phone. It seems nobody has really highlighted this until now, even though Switch users have been pairing Joy-Con with their phones for some time now.
It means you could go for a walk, pair your Joy-Con using the Bluetooth function, place it down somewhere and then capture a photo from afar. Did you know you could do this? Can you see yourself taking a photo this way? Leave a comment down below.

Wow can't wait to press the button and not have it register, and then develop stick drift. Thanks Nintendo
not much to say other than neato
But can it not drift?
Great article I'm glad I learned how to do this
Holy freaking baboon. Are you kidding me. That's prime. That's primal. That's choice. 👍 I love that they do these things and don't even advertise them. Or I don't know if love is the right word: It's so Nintendo though. Iwata would be proud. Gunpei Yokoi would be proud too. I hope everyone in the world sees this. I think they will also be proud.
I wonder if this would work with the Pokeball controller as that makes more sense to have with you to use since it doubles for Go
Can’t ever imagine a scenario where I would place my phone down somewhere and walk away from it in any public space.
It probably works better at that than an actual controller.
More drift than Fast and Furious.
“Shot on iPhone. Captured with Joy-Con”
Now you can ALWAYS get a photo of yourself with a Joycon in your hand!
@Savino really not the same though, you have to get in position within the time limit and then if you want another photo, go set it up and repeat the process. Much easier to just press a button from afar a few times.
I wonder if I could pair this with my DSLR?
@Savino Timers have their place, but aren't always a replacement for a remote shutter. A remote shutter allows you more control over when the shot takes place as well as being able to take multiple shots without having to go back to the camera.
. . . although if you're going to include yourself in the photo, a timer does allow you to take the shot without holding something in your hand. It really depends on what you want from the photo.
Probably drifts and takes pictures on its own 😆
Cool trick, but you can also spend $7 for a shutter fob on Amazon and not risk a $40 fragile controller with stock issues.
So cool to be able to take cute pictures of Pikachu Amiibo without touching your phone! Love it
Bluetooth controller can be used as a Bluetooth controller!!
What kind of pic would anyone take where u would sit ur phone down & walk away (that u aren't in, like suggested in the article)? Maybe if u wanted to take pics of an animal u don't want to scare & hope it comes back to the area before someone jacks ur phone?
Cool. I'll give it a shot (no pun intended, sorry). Now to pair my BT headphones natively-- Oh wait...
EDIT: Ok interesting. So I can actually control a lot of other functions on the phone with the joycon like navigating my home screen, from launching apps in my phone, to navigating websites. When you hold it sideways, X seems to close out of apps, B and A seem to "proceed" sometimes whereas clicking in the stick seemed to function as "Enter" so to speak. Y only seemed to open my bookmarks in a browser window. SL opens the hamburger menu (Google Chrome), couldn't figure out SR. While I can't say I would have a high use for all of this, it could be practical on my tablet at least, except my joycon drifts like crazy, which kinda kills the whole point :/
@twztid13 Longer exposure time photos work best when you're not physically holding or touching the camera - unsteady hands can blur the photo easily.
Also not all animal photos are taken in zoos where there are lots of people around to jack phones.
@CobraA1 i was joking about the jacking part. I was picturing being in a park, but surely no one would be so far away as not to be able to see someone trying to steal their phone...?
@MeloMan would it be useful like in an xbox gamepass game on android, or any game, really? Or would the lack of a 2nd analog probably kill that idea?
This is truly revolutionary!
Nintendo does what Sony don't (until they copy it later)
@twztid13 that's actually a really good question. I would assume if it's not one of the more simpler games then it probably would miss out on a lot of functionality. Sounds like something to be experimented upon...
