We're getting pretty used to seeing the infamous 'stability' Switch firmware updates these days, but today it's the Switch Online app's turn to get a small update.
The app has been updated to Version 1.11.0, and while the changes aren't anything to shout about, you'll want to make sure you download and install this update if you make use of it. Here are the full patch notes:
Ver. 1.11.0 (Released May 18, 2021)
- Game-specific services now available to all Nintendo Accounts (some restrictions for features like voice chat still apply).
- Option for voice-chat alerts added under Voice-Chat Settings in the in-app settings.
- Bug fixes implemented.
Incidentally, the last noteworthy update for the app arrived back in September, adding support for new Android and iOS versions. Something tells us we might be waiting a while for any significant overhauls.
Do you use the Nintendo Switch Online app for gaming with friends? Let us know in the comments below.

LET'S GOOOOO! BUG FIXES!!!
I bet this app has even less downloads than dr mario mobile
I just don’t understand why they bother keeping this app alive if they’re never gonna bother doing anything noteworthy with it.
Never used it once, if I have to use my phone to chat to someone during a game it's easier to just call them rather than using a fiddly app
I actually like the app, in terms of the dedicated game content like Splatnet 2 and the Animal Crossing Nook phone. They just shouldn't have limited voice chat to the app.
I think you should do a survey to see who has this app. As I feel they could be wasting their time with the 10 person user base.
I only ever really used it to order gear for Splatoon 2, but now I've pretty much got it all, I don't really need it. Wish Nintendo would polish up this side of things to make it easier to play / chat together for certain entries, otherwise people are just going to use alternatives like Discord.
This was the equivalent of WiiTelevision or whatever they called it.
they need to just give us discord on switch
@TossedLlama native voice chat means anyone can talk to children. Stranger danger. Think of the children. Xbox and PlayStation are child predator havens. And isn’t it easier using your phone which everyone has anyways?
I believe none of this but this is what Nintendo wants you to believe to justify their complete incompetence in this area.
I think it's missed opportunity that there is no support for New Pokemon Snap. It would be way easier to browse photos via the app. It works with SSBU, so why not Pokemon Snap.
@janfritz
Yes, this seems designed for Pokemon Snap.
The only reason I have this is for Splatoon 2 because you can order gear off of it. It's not like I have friends to voice chat with, and even if I did, I would use Discord!
I use it for Splatoon 2 all the time. You can get full K/D stats and weapon load outs of all the players in a match, plus checking the rotation and shopping for exclusive gear. It’s a bummer that Smash has none of these kind of features and ends up a glorified instagram account.
The whole thing feels like a missed opportunity. It can be really engaging with the right angle.
@TossedLlama, I doubt it.
At this point, I think it's safe to definitively say Nintendo doesn't know what they're doing. They already proved it themselves that the NSO app is just bad for voice chat. Sony is joining Discord just as Microsoft already did. Nintendo needs to take a serious look at themselves and consider whether their kid-friendly not-so-kid-friendly methods of communication are gonna work.
"You have a cell phone don't you?" I sure do Nintendo and I don't use it for games.
They updated it for miitopia, as there’s a mii sharing thing. “Game specific services”.
@SuperCharr Also great advice before hopping into Bugsnax.
I mean, I just wanna easily chat strategy during Clubhouse Games matches man.
Yo Brotendo... on the Switch... It's long overdue for:
Sincerely Supporter,
... Wun can only hope.
I forgot this even existed
no support for mario maker 2 level bookmarks or something similar makes no sense
Can it make my phone float in mid-air in front of me so I can use it like the original animation advertised it?
