Super Nintendo World isn't off to the best of starts, as Universal Studios Japan announces a new visitor limit across all of its themed lands just weeks after Nintendo's area gets up and running (thanks, Kotaku).
The Osaka Prefecture, where USJ is located, today posted a new single-day record of new COVID-19 cases; The Japan Times reports that the daily figure has jumped from 341 to 719, topping Tokyo's total for the eighth-consecutive day.
In response, and in order to cooperate with the policies of local governments, the park has announced that it will be reducing the number of daily visitors from 20,000 to 5,000. The restriction naturally means that fewer fans will be able to attend the brand new Nintendo park, but will hopefully go some way towards addressing public concern regarding the theme park's potential involvement with rising cases.

The park has provided details for those who already have tickets and anyone planning to attend here, and promises to operate in such a way that ensures "guests can enjoy the park with peace of mind". Despite asking visitors to wear masks and disinfect their hands, USJ recently ran a 'No Limits' campaign, perhaps giving off rather mixed messages surrounding its stance on dealing with the pandemic.

It's a shame for the people that don't get in....but a theme park with less people is ideal!
Covid isn't great, but I will miss the empty public spaces.
Quicker we can get to a new normal, where folk aren't crammed in like cattle, the better. Honestly, nut jobs and conspiracy theories aside, the only reason for Covid Passports is to convince people it's safe to go back to the old normal. While 1% get to ride in private jets oblivious. I hate to say it, but I fear Capitalism has learnt nothing from this pandemic.
I wouldn’t have been the same without Mario anyway...
Choosing to open this during the pandemic is classic Nintendo logic.
Yeah, yet another spike of the covids. Sigh. Glad to see places are still watching things, and reacting proactively.
People have to know, it spreads exponentially, and it's not gone until it's gone.
Scotty, we need more shots!!
Give me full power!
Oh no, this is anti-consumer!!!
They even create artificial scarcity with their theme parks! Scalpers are gonna have fun re-selling tickets!
NINJA APPROVED (please see that I’m joking, no whooshes!)
The park wasn’t designed with COVID in mind, I’m not really surprised.
It's amazing it even got to open in the first place. Good thing they don't close it completely though.
That was to be expected. I understand live entertainment took a heavier hit from Covid, but now isn't exactly the time to go to a theme park crammed with people. Face masks and hand sanitizers can only do so much
Public recreational activities are obviously going to be affected.
Unfortunately this will never end. Because they have no plan to vaccinate 3rd world countries, the virus will stay alive and well and continue to spread, mutating and eventually leading to ineffective vaccines which have to be changed to keep up with it.
And that will never end. It will go on and on and on and on and on.
If I were them I'd cancel any plans to open further theme parks in FL and CA. They've already committed in JP, but there's no sense further investing in a dead end.
@JaxonH we might as well just all give up and slit our wrists now right...
Planning to visit Universal Hollywood this summer, hopefully will see some nice views of the Nintendo construction on the Lower Lot! Already seen some nice pictures of the hills having been installed.
Oh wow, who could've seen this coming. I'm very surprised.
Why can't people wait it out we are so close.
Well, on the bright side, the ones who do get in will have the time of their life enjoying the amusement rides without having to wait in the queue for hours before each one.
I still remember the one morning we were at Alton Towers before the big crowds arrived. Went on Nemesis and Oblivion at least half a dozen times before there were any sizeable queues.
@JaxonH it's not weird. It's never going away. The only way is death. I won't let it get me. I'm gonna do a jimmi hendrix.
Cretinous that it's allowed to be open at all.
I didn't even think Covid would destroy everything. Like how the Subspace Emissary being swallowed into a black hole. Some of us are way too young to die. Let's hope all this will go away as soon as humanly possible. I wasted a year doing absolutely nothing
A whole 719, huh? A population that size in the US would probably be seeing at least 1600 daily cases, and we're reducing regulations atm.
@Allgonewrong We're all doomed no matter what, from covid or something else. No reason to give up early just because we can't live forever.
