It's time for our latest episode of 'why must Japan get all the cool things?', as Sega looks to be launching a new arcade game based on the Pokémon franchise.
According to Arcade Heroes, Sega has unveiled 'Pokémon Cologalina', a new medal game which will have cabinets set up in arcades across Japan. If you're unaware, medal games are essentially like those coin-pushing things we have in the west where you pop a coin in, watch it fall down, and hope that it pushes other coins out for a big cash prize (or a useless toy dinosaur, or whatever happens to be sitting on the coins inside).
Here's what it'll look like:
Japan's had other Pokémon medal games in the past, too, such as Pokémon Medal World. This one launched in the region back in 2012 in support of Pokémon Black and White, and was made by Bandai Namco.
We'd say it's extremely unlikely that Sega's new machine will make it over to any western arcades, as these funky medal games tend to remain exclusive to Japan. Still, if you ever happen to visit Japan in the future, perhaps to check out Super Nintendo World, it might be worth keeping an eye out for Pokémon Cologalina while you're there.
Thanks to Toy_Link for the tip!

I was going to joke about Pokémon Cologne but it actually exists.

@RupeeClock Damn, that package takes me back...
I don’t think Sega’s international arcade division is no any longer owned by Sega themselves. It’s another Avenue they seemed to have sold off - saw it in a tweet on the social media page couple weeks back. So I assume Sega no longer have the ability to distribute this internationally even if they wanted to.
Sega launching a Pokemon game. Roll over, Avengers.
@jump paging Hamster!
Too sad that most arcades in the west died out a long time ago. It sure was a nice time.
Ah, you mean the 2p machines! Somehow made into the TV show Tipping point!
So it's just a Pokemon skin on a standard arcade slot machine?
Hopefully, this prints SEGA loads of money...I mean...its Pokemon and Pokemon prints easy money...right?
Waiting for the Pokémon Caligula cross-over game.
That's not really an arcade game, if all your doing is trying to win a prize.
@rjejr LOL. Thats a good one.
@Tempestryke Thanks, I try. 😁
Cologalina must be the weirdest word I've ever heard lol
The Japanese are really talented at putting together words that sound vaguely like another language, but nonsense at the same time, like Infinity Strash or Intergrade.
Well, this is 100 times that 😂
Being Italian, I can't help relating it to "collo" (neck) and "gallina" (hen) lol
@rjejr Considering Conquest, that could actually work. Write up the pitch!
I actually thought it was some animatronic/hologram pokemon stadium like game or pinball 2P game at first glance. Sad to read it's just a coin pusher. Wasste of space
It reads "COROGARENA" in roman letters in the photo. It's a bit blurry, but I am pretty sure then that it's called Pokemon "Corogarena" and not "Cologalina", not that "Corogarena" makes much more sense. Maybe it's the word "arena" mashed with something else, but I haven't a clue.
It's worth pointing out that there is no clear distinction between the english 'L' sound and the english 'R' sound when it comes to Japanese Kana (as far as I know), which would explain the mistake.
SEGA does what Nintendoes.
@Ryu_Niiyama Caligula breeds Pokémon, w/ himself, and creates Centurion Pokémon to conquer Europe? 🤣
@Ulanda @FragRed As the closest thing we have to arcades in the US, family entertainment centers are still in operation. Something like this would most likely be seen in, Japanese-owned, Round1 since they use imported arcade games in their sites, as opposed to domestic Dave and Buster's. Pre-Covid, Dave and Buster's and Round1 were starting to expand rapidly. And now they're starting to reopen again, and open new locations, as some areas are well into their recovery/vaccine period. Let's hope things continue to get better.
What the hell is up with Japan and these weird-ass words they come up with? I'm sure it looks just as cool as random Kanji does to people who can't read kanji, but it comes off really awkward and strange. Do they not have ANY native English speakers in any of their development teams?
