Broken Sword studio Revolution Software has announced a new publishing deal with Microids that will see cyberpunk thriller Beyond a Steel Sky land on Nintendo Switch.
Beyond a Steel Sky is a sequel to 1994's point-and-click adventure, Beyond A Steel Sky, and has been made by Broken Sword creator Charles Cecil with art direction from Watchmen comic book artist, Dave Gibbons. The game's already available on Steam and Apple Arcade, but this new deal will see physical and digital releases across Switch, PS4 and Xbox One in Q3 2021.
"Beyond a Steel Sky stands as a thrilling story of loyalty and redemption set in an eerie and terrifying world of AI-driven social controls. Set a decade after the events of the first game, Beyond a Steel Sky immerses players once again in the captivating Union City – a dystopian cyberpunk city full of mysterious, sinister secrets.
With Dave Gibbons’s breathtaking comicbook art style, the game is a hugely ambitious adventure which redefines the genre by allowing the player to subvert the world, populated by AI-driven characters, with interesting solutions to puzzles emerging from their actions."
If you're yet to experience this one, the game has you taking on the role of a man called Robert Foster. A child has been abducted in a brutal attack, and you've vowed to bring him home. To do this, you'll be getting stuck into a set of "engaging puzzles" and a fast-paced narrative as you explore the game's setting of Union City.

Who needs Directs! This week's announcements have been great!
I didn't know Dave Gibbons worked on video games, cool.
Oh wow. This is amazing news. Damn. Loved the original on the Amiga, but I would want to play it again before playing this sequel. Is it included?
@Ooyah - same here, loved it on the Amiga, it really felt like an event and something new at the time. Came packaged with a comic if I remember right, telling the pre-story.
We had proper load times in those days too, walk out a room... "insert disc 6... insert disc 8". Happy days.
Playing the first game on Switch (I'm not sure I ever finished it) would be a real trip, though I can imagine new gamers will wonder what the fuss was about.
I was hoping this was an announcement of the classic game xoming to Switch. The new game looks kind of generic.
The original is awesome and I credit it with getting me into "games not of my current era" (i.e. retro games).
We'll see how this turns out.
Funny, I just added Broken Sword 5 to my wishlist today! I'm having so much fun with Leisure Suit Larry on Switch I need another old school point 'n' click game to play after. 😃 I will keep an eye on this one.
Never played the first game. The article says the first game and the sequel have the same name?
This is definitely on my radar with blade runner as well. Found an old retro magazine disc with Beneath a Steal Sky on the other day while sorting stuff. Shame my laptop is dead!
@Xylnox It's a typo, the original game is called Beneath a Steel Sky. It's a great old school point and click adventure and is available for free now on PC (from GOG, Steam or various other places).
Actually quite like the Broken Sword series so will monitor this
This is great news. Love Revolution software. Day one purchase for me!
Got it on PC. Not as fantastic as the original, but it's unrealistic to expect it would be.
The first game title was beneath a steel sky if my memory is exact.
@BionicDodo Oh, ok. Ty for the info.
"Beyond a Steel Sky is a sequel to 1994's point-and-click adventure, Beyond A Steel Sky," really? I thought the original game was called "Beneath A Steel Sky".
If you're ever playing the original "Beneath a Steel Sky", or any point-and-click puzzler, make sure you use the Universal Hint System: https://www.uhs-hints.com/
When you're stuck, that can help nudge you in the right direction instead of the usual step-by-step walkthroughs.
