Nintendo has announced that Animal Crossing: New Horizons has become the company's fastest-selling game ever launched in Europe.
Since its release on 20th March 2020, Nintendo has shifted more than seven million copies of the title across the continent. The impressive stat (which combines physical and digital sales data) means that more than a third of European Switch owners have a copy of the game, with just over 20 million Switch consoles being sold there over the past four years.
Nintendo of Europe President, Stephan Bole, has shared his thanks in a new statement:
"We’re truly grateful that Animal Crossing: New Horizons has been embraced by so many players across Europe. Animal Crossing has long been a popular franchise in Europe, and its continued growth is due to the love of our fans for this unique series."
As things stand, New Horizons is the Switch's second-best-selling game of all time, closely following the mighty Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Of course, Mario Kart launched back in 2017, so New Horizons' incredible sales momentum suggests that it'll soon grab that number one spot.
Earlier today, Nintendo announced further support for the title in the form of a new, first-anniversary update which offers more content for players as we head into the title's second year on the market.

All those sales and still no Brewster 🥲
Lock down gaming life saver for me, hopefully there will be more content to follow to keep me interested beyond April the 12th as beer garden season officially begins!!
This game is still sooooo lacking in content it’s crazy. Where’s an island tour at when you need it? Or all the myriad of old faces we still have yet to see? The island is so much more condense than any other game. It’s simply a sandbox. The mobile like updates suck when New Leaf released with so much content on the cart out the gate.
@Desa Totally agree!
20m is a lot of consoles.
Especially Surprising cause the switch costs 380 euro's new.
Thanks europe, for these ***** taxes
@Desa Because myriad means a lot of you don't need to have it plural and you don't need to put of after
Happy to see Animal Crossing do so well. The series deserves it. =)
Wow that's really nice to hear! I know for sure the european audiences will love Animal Crossing, well this franchise is strong around the world!
Awesome sales for the best game in the series, still can't believe how many hours I have put in.
Oh wow, I don't think anyone could see this happening!
Yay.. this means that the future for the series is set in stone.. more stripping out content and patching it back in to make sales! I guess the series is as good as dead to me now, except for the older games.
New Leaf sold just under 3 million copies in Europe lifetime. The growth has been absurd.
@westman98 I know it's sarcasm, but you shouldn't really wave people off for not liking the game. I have a reason that's not just "Muh they cut everything, game bad!". I have an issue with the cut content, but I also have an issue with most other things that new horizons does. It worries me deeply to see the series go into a direction like this, since these updates, instead of offering anything of value, offer little to nothing.. and the game isn't very fun. New leaf managed to keep me entertained for 5 years, New Horizons lasted about 2 months for me..
Edit: Westman edited his comment to make it look like I was antagonizing him.
An incredible stat for an incredible game that came along when the world needed it most .....(but people still decide to moan about what isn't there rather than enjoy it for what is there).
Well deserved
@karatekid1612 Same here.
This game really deserves it on so many levels.
@VoidofLight,
I know you do not personally like the game, but you should not always post this in a way that assumes that your opinion is right, and that it's a lot of people that agree with you.
To me that's just as bad and unhelpful as the people dismissing your concerns, as I have always said your and others complaints are valid on a personal level, but we just can't always assume that personal dislikes are automatically valid and shared by the majority.
@popey1980,
People always look at the negatives, but then ignore the additions and better visuals etc, also some of the streamlining was much needed in my opinion.
They also seem to have a lot of issues with people not sharing their negative views and enjoying the game, and always seem to post from an elevated standpoint suggesting people are easily pleased, or just not aware of all the content that has been cut etc, etc.......
@johnvboy Chill. I’m literally expressing an opinion.
@VoidofLight,
I am fine with it, I was more concerned that it can't be good obsessing about the games short comings, I get it you are upset, but there has to be a point where you just simply let it go, and then move on.
I am also on your side as I obviously would like more content with this game, but will not call the game an absolute mess because it does not include all the features of New Leaf, as I feel the additions in this new game keep me more than busy.
@Desa What are you talking about? The game has a crap ton of content. Terraforming and being able to decorate outside alone are an insanely huge addition. That’s not even mentioning the qol changes. Every AC game has had content that doesn’t return, I swear all you people do is whine and moan about a feature you used once in New Leaf that didn’t return, why don’t you just shut up and enjoy the game or go back to New Leaf if it’s so damn perfect
@WindWaker95
Yeah, like I said it’s a sandbox game. I can voice my opinions. It’s a game of continuous updating, crafting a town of cookie cutter characters, main goal being a decorating star. It was fun...at first. You can’t craft multiples. Speaking of multiples, you can invite more people to your town, but to what end? The games they gave you in new leaf to enjoy with people around the world in some way, if not just your friends, doesn’t exist. As someone who enjoyed every previous animal crossing I can say as I wish. If you’re going to be rude, don’t tag me. Voicing an opinion isn’t a crime.
