Tales of Vesperia's been kicking around since 2008, but it never arrived on Nintendo platforms until 2019. Released as a Definitive Edition, it still offers a fine JRPG experience, and we awarded it 8/10 stars.
Announcing the news earlier today, Bandai Namco revealed Vesperia's Definitive Edition has reached one million sales after two years. To celebrate, they're launching a discount campaign in Japan until March 3rd.
Whilst not directly related to that celebration, Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition is included in Bandai Namco's recent eShop sale, currently available at $12.49 until February 25th for North America.
Europe hasn't been quite as lucky, but Nintendo did announce a "Digital Deals" sale which goes live tomorrow, so it could get discounted then.
Surprised it's taken this long to reach one million sales? Plan on picking it up at a discount? Share your thoughts below.

I have it but haven't started yet. One day my Switch backlog will go down. One day...
Here's to hoping more tales games come to switch! I'm really happy for Vesperia though! I picked it up for $12 last year and it was an absolute steal! Fantastic game!
Pretty impressive for a remaster of a JRPG.
More Tales remastered for Switch would be awesome, the new Tales of Arise doesn't interest me much but more remastered of the older Tales would be nice: Symphonia 1 & 2, Abyss, Berseria, Xillia 1 & 2, Phantasia, Innocence R, Hearts R, Destiny 1 & 2, Eternia, Zestiria, Graces F, etc.
A must play for JRPG fans, especially at that discounted price point. If it helps, one of your party members is an actual dog that fights with a knife.
I'm happy for the team with its success. Hopefully this brings more remasters and potentially new Tales games to the Switch. Symphonia would be a nice surprise.
Started playing it, enjoyed it and then just...stopped. I dunno. I should continue on and hope some new gameplay mechanic enters that makes it addictive as hell.
Picked it up for $12 on the Windows Store.
@Joriss I can see the combat be a hit or miss for some. For me, it got better with time as more characters and abilities became available. Setting up combos with multiple characters helped alleviate the monotonous button mashing that can occur on a lot of fights.
Battles can also get pretty hectic with many things happening on screen, but the turn based aspect for casting spells / abilities and consuming items helped bring a more strategic element to the combat.
Edit - Typo yo
It's an awesome game! My only issue was that if you put it down for a few days and forget where you were, there's no good recap feature. So I say play only when you can devote a good week of play time to it.
@shining_nexus ha that's good to know. Just realized that the whole 'button smashing' skills at start get bull quickly.
Got it last week, but haven't started it yet. Hopefully soon!
Not my favourite Tales of game but a good game nontheless. Now give us some more Tales of games on the Switch!
come on namco give us the remaster edition of tales of symphonia for switch.
@Heavyarms55 This is one reason why I love Dragon Quest XI. There is also a refresher of your journey when you turn the game on and it's a great feature to have, especially if you take a break from the game for a couple of weeks.
I have it on Switch and maybe 20 hours in it but I always lose interest in Tales games. I always go "hey this one is pretty good" and stop after 15-25 hours lol. Ugh.
@Joriss Same here. But on the 360 version. That was back in 2009-2010. I’ve kinda dipped in here and there since. But for the most part, no real progress from where I left off and I’d say I was about 30% through the game. I honestly have no clue why I just stopped as I was enjoying the game and I enjoy the basic idea behind the Tales series as I played through Symphonia three times. I am tempted to double-dip and maybe finally get all the way through on the Switch.
Wanted to pick this up, but didn't because the price seemed a bit high for a 360 game at a higher resolution. Unaware if much was added to this version, but I'd like to play Vesperia someday
great game , recommend it to any jrpg fan.
When the Funimation channel was a thing you could have on your TV they used to play the movie all the time, and it was so boring! Hopefully the game fares better.
Enjoy the tales of games but looking for a hard copy.
@TossedLlama If there was, I was too dumb to find it. Loved the game but got kinda lost when I had to go a few days without playing it.
I loved this when I played it back on 360 a few years ago. I may eventually get this for the extras, but I'm in no hurry.
I would love to see more Tales games hit Switch, just not Zestiria or Berseria as I've recently played them on PS4 (and Zestiria particularly was a decidedly very average game). Bring on the Symphonia collection PS3 got, the Xillia games, or Graces F & I'd be game, though.
I'm a huge fan of Tales games but kind of disappointed about not getting more games ported to the Switch. Recently played through the first Tales of Xillia game as I missed out on it when it first got released and it is now one of my favourites in the series so wouldn't hate seeing it on the Switch. The thing with Tales games is because their basic gameplay has remained largely the same since Symphonia you can pretty much jump into most while picking up the differences along the way.
@Joriss I had the same feeling about it. Got 20-25 hours into it and just didn't feel compelled to keep going. There was just nothing happening to make it stand out from any other RPG. I still have it on the shelf but honestly don't see myself ever going back to it.
I loved this game when it came out on the 360. Playing it now, though...it's so slow and basic. Xenoblade Chronicles really raised the bar for me on JRPGs. (Although I still like the PS1 era games, so who knows.)
@Beatrice ok
One of my favorite games of all time
@Deliesh
Agreed. Something just didn't click with me about this game. The story and characters were good, but the actual gameplay and navigating was annoying because I routinely got lost. Monolith Soft did the right thing by adding tracking features to Xenoblade's remaster.
@Ghost_of_Hasashi if they do Symphonia I hope they remove the gambling they added to get that one Devil’s Arm. It didn’t add anything to the quest it just made it exceptionally frustrating. I’d like them to work on the graphics, the HD version isn’t that much better looking than the original.
Well deserve to an underrated franchise. Now if we can get Symphonia, one of the best in the series, and maybe more of the unrelease titles....
Hot take incoming. I have to be honest, I've seen so much praise about this game, and have tried to play it seriously on THREE separate occasions. Plugged 20 or so hours into it and could never get into it. I love RPGs and other Tales games, but man, I have nothing good to say about this game. I think it's wildly overrated.
