Some decent deals to be had. I personally went to the russian eshop to get a few of these (Luigis mansion and 51 worldwide games) for even further savings.
Happy new year all!
Skyrim still being £25 is a headscratcher - a port of a 10 year old game being the same price as DQ11, WTF is going on with these prices?
A lot of delicious stuff, but I won't know my capability until Wednesday. Ideally, I could go for NFS Hot Pursuit and The Outer Worlds, (both compelling enough to outrank Civ VI Expansion Pack and Layton's Mystery Journey from the same price range - for all my definite interest in Katrielle, I've still got four mainline games of her father's adventures to cover first anyway) and even something else like Yomawari dilogy or the DPC pack for the recently obtained Touhou: Genso Wanderer... but that's going by last January's gaming funds I'm not yet confident I can reprise. On the other hand, there are deep discounts like AER, they might be more guaranteed picks in any scenario.
Shoutout to 3DS as well - despite actually losing a few games (I hear eShop just delisted a bunch of DSiWare, including the original Shantae: Risky's Revenge😔), the clamshell offers better news on the discount front, with a bunch of Etrian Odyssey and SMT games on sale again.
@Mr-Fuggles777 maybe Nintendo's involvement (Hylian equipment and such) resulted in some discount policies rubbing off? 😛
I actually bought it full-priced, not long after release at that. 150 hours in, I've barely even visited most of the holds yet. Surely a game of such capacity can be a steal at 25 pounds as well, but people still want it for less on the basis of age alone?
Admit it, Steam just spoiled us all beyond recovery.😏
@Mr-Fuggles777 Publishers are free to set their prices to whatever they think is best for their business strategy. If Skyrim is still making them a satisfactory amount of money then they have no reason to throw it in the bargain bin just because some other publishers may handle things differently.
Please add EUR prices! Many of your readers are living in the Eurozone. Thank you!
I'm tempted by Wandersong for £5.39! Looks like a funny and different game.
All good. Decided to go for Fenyx, Wuppo, Robotics: Elite & Wandersong. Have vast majority of other on sale items I want.
@BenAV Bethesda handle things differently on every other system, the fact they keep an inflated price on Switch isn't something to defend - especially given its the weakest system to play the game on with no mod support etc.
@Mr-Fuggles777 I'm defending the rights of publishers to price their games however they want. If the game sells well on Switch at the current price then there's no reason for them to drop it further. It's not like anyone's being forced to buy a game if they feel it's not worth the price. Everyone is completely free to buy the game on another platform or bypass it entirely.
I bought DQ11 at that price and whilst I have only played an hour, I think I am going to enjoy it. Turn based RPG's have provided me with many memories and I think this will add to those. Lets see if its as good as people say and it may crack into my Top 10 all time.
Otherwise I already bought Fenyx physically for £25 and have completed most of the others on this list. The Switch is far an away my favourite console of all time and I'm really hoping there is a 1.5 model released this year so I can replace my launch day old man.
@Max_the_German I second this. Cant be that hard to list euro as well.
@BenAV of course publishers are free to add £10 switch tax onto the games (its currently £15 on sale on ps4)
It doesn't effect me as I've already got it on PS4 and Xbox, but this pricing structure sucks for those who are stuck with the one system and constantly get shafted on multi platform games.
@Mr-Fuggles777 Games holding their value on the Switch would be largely due to the fact that they're selling really well on the Switch. It'd make no sense to lower the price to the same as the PS4 version (which has also been out for longer than the Switch version) if it's currently selling better on the Switch at a higher price point.
If anything it's a positive thing that publishers are able to make a healthy profit on their Switch titles rather than being forced to sell them for next to nothing soon after launch as it's more reason for them to continue to support the platform and its eventual successor in the future rather than just abandoning Nintendo like many have in the past.
@BenAV Bethesda won't be rushing to support Switch now they are owned by Microsoft and things are moving to the new generation unless Nintendo allow some form of Gamepass on Switch.
Stop defending multi million pound companies ripping off consumers - its Capitalism at its very worst however you try and dress it up.
@Mr-Fuggles777 I was talking in general. Games sell well on the Switch. They're not 'ripping off consumers' by not having extremely heavy discounts, you're being absurd. The current sale is half retail price and is already more than reasonable.
@BenAV I meant that they are ripping consumers off as there is always a significant price disparity between software on switch compared to other systems.
I appreciate and understand that a game will cost retail when it first ports across because of the time taken to optimise it for the system (Doom Eternal is a great example), but consistently charging a higher price in seasonal sales is simply taking the p***. Look at Doom 2016, it still costs more to buy on switch than the newer version does on other consoles, its the same with a vast majority of multi console ports and yet people defend the right to be overcharged.
Burnout Paradise actually released with a higher RRP on switch than any other system and people still bought it and lapped it up!
Even for the 35th anniversary of Mario, Nintendo won't go any higher than 33% off.
Come on, 2% more wouldn't hurt on those Mario titles right? XD
@Mr-Fuggles777 It's not overcharging if a lot of consumers are happy to buy it for that price. Just because they're no longer able to sell a game at a decent price on other systems doesn't mean they shouldn't be able to do so on the Switch if the demand is still there. They'd be throwing away money for no reason.
@Kaori-chan "There is a difference between defending an individual or group's right to do something and defending the fact that they do so."
Not really. There's nothing wrong with them acting within their rights so I don't think they've done anything that deserves criticism in this case.
@Kaori-chan Personally I don't think I would criticise them in your scenario. This is getting pretty off-topic though. I think it's pretty obvious what my main point is so we don't really need to debate the semantics of my choice of words. I'm just trying to say that I don't think there's anything wrong with publishers selling their product for a price that they feel is reasonable and complaining because a game is only 50% off is acting a little entitled.
@Kaori-chan They can only get away with charging extra if people are still willing to buy it at that price. I think if it still sells well then that means it's priced appropriately. There are plenty of games that I skip because they cost more than I'm personally prepared to pay but what isn't worth it for me might be worth it for others.
@Kaori-chan I wouldn't bother, its obvious that he doesn't see how getting charged more to play on switch is a bad thing.
Has anyone else noticed 99% of the coming soon section of the eshop right now is absolute shovelware pap? Hey Nintendo life, how about an article on the absolute state of the eshop? It’s long overdue comment...
@Gwynbleidd If a publisher sold a game for $200, you'd probably still get a few people who are desperate enough to pay it or have enough excess funds to pay that amount but a large majority would probably be put off so it'd end up being much less profitable. They need to find the sweet spot where they can make a decent amount per sale without scaring off too many potential buyers. For full retail games, that sweet spot would general be the typical RRP for Switch physical release. Even just another $10 on top of that would scare a lot of people off if the game doesn't have the quality to justify it.
@PoundShopOrwell I think it's just a pretty quiet time of year. Not many games are going to get annouced in December or released in January. Now that we're past the Christmas period, things will start to pick up again and the eShop will start to reflect that.
@Clyde_Radcliffe Wandersong was a good game. Not great, but definitely worth that price. I think I paid 10, and it was worth it. What I like best about the game is what you notice: it is different and creative. The writing is funny too. I hope you enjoy it!
