Ahead of Monster Hunter Rise's exclusive Switch launch this March, the game's producer Ryozo Tsujimoto and director Yasunori Ichinose have issued a special new year message.
The team intends to share some "brand-new information" at the beginning of this month and asks fans to keep an eye out for that. Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin is also planned to be released in Summer 2021.
In the lead up to the game's launch, Capcom will also be releasing a "limited-time" demo at some point this month. Here's what you can expect from it:
"We need you to protect Kamura Village! Wade through the marshy Flooded Forest and confront new monsters, such as the sleep-inducing Somnacanth and the omnivorous trickster Bishaten! #MHRise Demo coming January 2021."
Will you be adding Monster Hunter Rise to your Switch library when it arrives on 26th March? Leave a comment down below.

I'm going to buy this game day one.
you want 3rd party exclusives on switch? support the ones that are releasing like this one
I'm on the fence about this one, loved World but hated GU.
Hopefully the Demo will sway me enough to put down a pre order as I could do with a decent grind on Switch.
This is a game i am hyped about.
Ah, the first quarter of a new year, we all know what that means, right? An amazing Capcom game!
Some other guy: um, excuse me but RE3 remake came out in Q2 of last year.
Yes, Q1 is reserved for AMAZING Capcom games. Amazing ones.
Day 1. Love the look of the game and the new monsters. Really want to get my hands on the demo to try out Hunting Horn, but Great Sword’s crazy mobility with the wire bug is my main for sure.
@ChaosBadger777 It looks way more World than GU so I don’t think you have much to worry about, but we’ll have a demo soon anyway.
Good old announcements about coming announcements! Everyone's favorite I'm sure.
Regret not getting into Monster Hunter World and missed that train. Definitely will jump into this game.
I'm so hyped I'm losing my mind!
Been binging hard on Monster Hunter World trying to stay sane waiting for this game.
This is all I've wanted from the day Switch was announced- a proper, modern MH on a hybrid system. It looks so good!!
Arrrgh, I've been obsessively refreshing news sites and playing other MH games obessively. I want the demo so badly!
This is the MH World equivalent the Switch was longing for, but with its own unique style.
I can’t wait.
@BoyfriendOfDeath If you're a veteran then you dodge a bullet, the graphical update wasn't worth stripping the game to its bare minimum of content. It's was pure eye candy, guess it was a smart move to bring in a new market of beginners. But no substance for us true monster hunter fans =:3
hope we get a little update on Stories 2 as well!
@Quix Oh crap. Sorry. I mean, I never got into Monster Hunter. PERIOD. I was thinking about starting off with World, but never got around to it. My interests came when I replayed Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker and played the Monster Hunter missions.
After buying and Xbox one just for the huge disappointment that was Worlds, I just been washing off the bad taste with Monster hunter generations on the switch. Can't believe how much replayability it has compare to worlds. They touched the core of the franchise to turn it into an eye candy , dumb down piece of crap. Glad I helped all my hunter buddies dodge that bullet, like a reviewer said "They just took the hunting outta Monster hunter with Worlds". Now again, all they had to do is clean the game up, don't fix what ain't broken, give us maps with no loading screens and a touch up on the graphics, that is it. That said, this Monster Hunter seems promising, give me a switch theme monster hunter and I will buy it, I will buy an entire system just for one game, and that's Monster Hunter =
@BoyfriendOfDeath well worlds would of been nice for beginners, my problem was how bare bones it was and pretty much how there was nothing for veterans to enjoy, game was really dumb down. You could pretty much complete everything in 60 to 90 hours. Sure may seem like a lot but it was nothing compared to 500 to 800 in the other games. They messed with a lot of core mechanics that made the game great, which rubbed me and other veterans the wrong way. Again great for beginners since the other games weren't that easy to pick up and had a steep learning curve but will end up been a great experience if you stick with em =:3
Won’t be for single players likely.
@Rika_Yoshitake Reading that this game might end up on PC I'll wait for now or atleast until its cheaper.
Too hyped loved world but I'm more focused on my switch now and really can't wait iv pre ordered and trying not to tell my big bro all the things is seen is hard cuz he wants it all to suprise him oooooo COME ON MARCH GET HERE ALREADY!!!!! XD
@Quix, A lot of the world players (myself included) struggled going back and playing the older games in the series as they felt really dated and missing a lot of the QoL additions compared to World- especially if it was a players first game in the series.
Rise is going to have to tread a careful path between iterations to appease fans from both sides.
Given how well World has done however, I'm hoping they follow that path more than the old games.
Ytes yes yes 🤘 perfect
@BoyfriendOfDeath @Quix
Monster Hunter World was amazing. Easily the best game in the series. I say that as a long time vet with thousands of hours poured in to half a dozen games spanning as many consoles. Hundreds of hours in MHGU, which I loved to death. I spent 6 months learning Japanese just for the MHXX import before localization.
But World was amazing. Anyone saying its "dumbed down crap" obviously didn't play it or is just looking for reasons to bash it for not coming to a Nintendo system. It was the exact same MH we know and love, just as complex and just as difficult. But with much more modern, pleasant systems.
There were things MHGU did better, like weapon variety, decorations and the skill system, and a huge monster roster. But World with Iceborn has a MASSIVE roster now too, and virtually everything else it did better. I was one of those "I still love MHGU more than World" people. But after all the updates and Iceborne expansion, even I couldnt pretend MHGU was better anymore.
Any fan of MH loves them both. Sony fanboys tend to bash MHGU saying "I cant go back to that archaic game" while Nintendo fanboys bash World saying "it dumbed down MH, it's a crap game" which is utterly ignorant and fooling nobody.
And you can bet Nintendo hating fanboys hate Rise now. It's always the same song and dance with the insecure.
Monster Hunter Rise looks like it might be able to top World. It cant match its lush, intoxicating world, and that's definitely something I'll miss, but it looks better in other respects. In either case, MH Rise is certain to be one of the greatest video games of all time, just like Monster Hunter World. Only Rise will have the benefit of being on a hybrid system.
I forgot that a demo was arriving this month. That's going to be fun.
@JaxonH aside from the missing charm of the old games, I did like World and it ended up my second most played MH game ever.
The only thing I hate about World are the later 1 hit KO mechanics especially the one in the Alatreon quest, so if they never ever do that crap again I'm fine (the way Fatalis quest refined it was much better but still not perfect, it feels like a cheap mechanic too just make everything "harder" instead of really harder)
Simultaneous release on other formats.
Drops mic and runs out the Nintendo Treehouse door terribly fast...
@Rayquaza2510
One hit kills kinda suck, I agree. And that's definitely a fair criticism (though older titles, particularly Teostra, Kushala Daora, Alatreon in MH3U and Level 135+ Jho in MH4U also had one hit kills, sometimes simply because they hit so hard, but there didnt seem to be as much push back over them at the time).
But I'm not too worried about that. That's usually only a few monsters at the very end of the game. I do understand the complaints with how World did it though- it was more a guaranteed one hit kill as opposed to "a likely one hit kill". Still. Forest through the trees and all that. World was a phenomenal game. It bugs me when I see people here attack the game and pretend like it sucks. You never see that anywhere else, even on the MH subreddit. At most people will list some complaints or say they preferred MHGU more, but to say its dumbed down crap is just fanboy rhetoric.
I had a friend I met here who lives in Italy preorder the game for me from a French retailer who's offering a steelbook case for Rise. Also have the Collector Edition and digital deluxe version preordered, and all the amiibo. Even taking off a few days of work when Rise releases.
This is going to be a momentous occasion!
Going to go on a whim and say this half deconfirms a Nintendo Direct this month as you'd expect this game to appear in there to share the info with. Was low key hoping they would kick off the new year with a banger Direct after a near direct-less year but, nah.
.. well I guess it's not entirely off the table yet but not a very high chance still.
As for Monster Hunter.. maybe I'll give the series another shot with this one. I could never get into the series before but I still kinda want to because it always does look like great fun...
@JaxonH
I do think World was dumbed down crap but Iceborne was easily the best Ultimate expansion to the series. Its difficulty easily outclasses anything the earlier games threw at me. I imagine standard Rise will be pretty simple to blast through but it'll at least be fun to see the new mechanics and stuff and obviously to get prepped for the all but already announced Ultimate version of Rise. They might do an Iceborne and call it something different though. Hyped!
@Yosher
Monster Hunter is a downright magical series if it clicks. I easily put hundreds of hours into each installment. Gimme a holler if you get into Rise, I'm always looking to hunt with more folk.
@Yosher
Monster Hunter is my favorite series of all time. Mind you, I've been playing video games since Mega Man 3 on the NES. I've owned every console aside from the Saturn and OG Xbox (and Series X now that I've moved to PC), with 350 Switch games on the shelf. Monster Hunter is the best I've ever played.
Back in 2013, after I bought a Wii U, MH3U released. I thought it looked cool, so I bought it. But I got bored after an hour since it was a bunch of text reading and no action, and I had no idea what I was doing.
But I had a coworker, a diehard Xbox fan who kept saying, "I just wanna play some Monster Hunter", and literally bought a Wii U just to play MH3U. His enthusiasm convinced me to jump back in, and we hunted online together. That's all it took. My first real hunt was so thrilling, I remember cutting the tail off the Royal Ludroth thinking Holy crap, you can do that?!! It was a brutal fight to the very end. We got him limping, but failed to kill him in time. But I was hooked. 600 hrs later, I was still playing that game.
Every day I'd get off work and hop online with Darnell, and he always had some snazzy new armor set. And I'd be like dude! I want an armor set like that! And he'd help me farm a Qurupeco armor set like his. Next day, I'd feel all proud in my spiffy new armor, but here he'd come waltzing in with Lagiacrus armor. Dude! I want a set like that! And he'd help me farm Lagiacrus. This went on, day in day out. The addiction of wanting perpetially better gear is real.
And Monster Hunter World finally advances the series and modernized it into a AAA game. It's so good. My favorite game of all time, in fact. But... it wasn't on Switch. And while playing MH on the big screen is amazing, portable MH is fire. Having a hybrid version of Rise that's playable on the TV or handheld or portable console mode in tabletop... that's the dream. The first ever modern, AAA Monster Hunter on not just a portable system, but a hybrid system. Hype doesnt even begin to cover it.
The thing is, the older games were notoriously hard to get into. Very slow start, high learning curve, and they didnt have AAA graphics to entice people into it. World changed all that. It's so much easier to get into now, and Rise will carry on that design philosphy.
Give Monster Hunter Rise a chance. There's a reason people go absolutely nuts for this series. You have to find a weapon you like and learn its moveset, it's combos. Until then you're just button mashing. The demo will have 3 quests (easy, medium, hard) and you can choose any of the 14 weapon types. Try them out, see what clicks. Then watch a Gaijin Hunter tutorial on YouTube for that weapon. The movers largely stay the same from game to game. Rise will have mostly the same moveset as World, so watch one of his World tutorials for whichever weapon you end up going with.
It'll change your life. Once your eyes open to the magical experience of Monster Hunter, you'll never be the same again. Other games suddenly aren't fun anymore. All you want is to keep playing MH. It's that good.
@Aya-chan I will keep that in mind, if I do happen to get into the series- although chances are I'll probably try it out with friends first. I do very much appreciate the offer either way!
@JaxonH Goodness, that is quite a story, just reading up on that made me smile because it was that good a story to read on. And if nothing else, you at the very least convinced me to try the demo! I will absolutely try it and see if I can actually get into the series this time, and maybe if I get into this game I will be able to go back and enjoy earlier installments as well.
But let's not jump ahead; first have to see if this Rise demo will click. Thank you, very much appreciate your comment!
@Yosher
Ya, sorry for the wall of text. The series just means so much to me, and seeing new players discover the thrill of MH for themselves is one of my greatest pleasures now.
The biggest hurdle people have is the combat. It's not a high Octane action button masher. Every attack should be deliberate. It's almost turn based, in a way. Hit hit, dodge, sheath weapon, reposition. Rinse and repeat. It's all about waiting for openings and not getting greedy. Even one extra hit when you should have been dodge rolling out of the way can result in you getting wrecked. You have to learn to pace yourself. Get some hits in, then dodge roll and sheath. Always sheath because you can't run otherwise, and your movement is hampered with weapon drawn- there are countless skills you can acquire via armor in the game, quick sheath is one people like, though personally I prefer evasion to increase invincibility frames when dodge rolling, and high grade earplugs so monster roars don't flinch my hunter.
My recommendations for weapon as a new player are the long Sword or dual blades. These are good beginner weapons, and the ones I started out learning back in Mh3u. The other weapons are either ranged (which I dont recommend for beginners), big and slow which takes more skill and knowledge of a monster's moveset, or really advanced.
@ChaosBadger777 honestly it look much closer to World than GU in mechanics. Some things remind me if GU's aerial style and hunter arts but theye seem to be only the one style(I.e. that wire bug using aerial-like style) instead of trying to come up with half a dozen out of thin air.
Which reminds me that in GU, Hunting Styles were meant to be regional styles despite none of it's villages (ported from older games as they were) featuring these styles in their original games.
Which make me wonder if they aren't trying to resurrect the idea of separate hunter styles again but by introducing them in -individual- games where their presence can be more immersive and fit with the setting introducing them. I even suspect this started not with Rise but World itself. When World first release the slinger and clutch claws were just accessories but when Iceborne came they introduced so many moves focusing on these two it might actually have become akin to a new hunting style.
If future games are similar to Iceborne and Rise, I half expect a new "Generation" in a few year... albeit one simply featuring the hunters styles of the games that preceded it(like those of Iceborne and Rise) in a crossover title rather than bringing them or if thin air.
@JaxonH Yeah, I will admit, the thing that bugged me the most when I tried Monster Hunter before was the sluggish feeling of attacks. Not that I wanted like, instant attacks, but it still felt slow. I didn't ever think of it as being almost turn based, maybe if I keep that in mind more I'll be able to enjoy it more, but we'll see on that I suppose. I'll be sure to give that demo a try and hopefully a new Monster Hunter player will be born out of it!
I've said this in a previous Rise article but its going to be so hard for me to let go of my Valor style in GU when I play Rise. I was hesitant at first to branch out and try different styles because I was stubborn and intimidated. But once I got into Valor style holy crap does it turn you into a beast with every weapon. Completely changed my play (for the better!) with Great Sword and especially Heavy Bowgun. Oh I'm gonna miss that power run ability!
And for those that mentioned earlier about hating any 1 hit kill monsters and hope they're not in Rise. After dealing with every EX deviant in GU I say bring it on!
I’ve already made up my mind to get this day 1.
@Rika_Yoshitake Except it's coming to PC, like Stories 2. Will be buying Rise there like many others.
@Yosher
It's a common response because most of us are conditioned to expect games to play a certain way.
Monster Hunter is unique in that combat uses something called anticipation, or in layman terms, wind up animation commitments. Each action, each attack, each dodge roll, sheathing your weapon, using a health potion, etc, all have luxurious, gorgeous, fluid animations, and the time for that animation to play out is part of the strategy. To someone who's new and doesnt understand and isnt used to it, it can feel, as you said, "sluggish". But once you've acclimated, it just feels right, and other games without animation commitments start feeling as if they lack depth.
The killer though is that certain attack sequences continue in a combo, and if you don't know that sequence, your combo can stop with a waiting animation that locks you out of attacking again for a second or two (which feels like eternity in the heat of battle). That's by design. You're meant to learn the strategic combos that avoid animation locks in between attacks. And eventually you'll find a good combo that you tend to loop over and over again (usually you don't have time to even get off a full combo, but in time, as you get better and start taking advantage of openings more strategically, you'll start doing longer combos and looping combos).
Really it just takes some getting used to. But one of the reasons I recommend long sword or dual blades, is they are faster weapons with shorter animations, which is typically easier for a new player to adapt to. The slower weapons, especially when you dont know the right combos, leave you with huge gaping animation freezes in between attacks that, I can imagine, feels clunky as heck to someone who doesnt know how to use the weapon and isnt accustomed to the slower nature.
That's why learning your weapon is so incredibly important. You don't have to have every last combo and situational moveset memorized right off the bat, but you do need to know the basic attacks and how to string them together in a basic combo, you do need to develop habit of "look for opening, run in, unsheath with an attack, attack a few more times, dodge roll away, sheath weapon, run around and reposition". Too many new players keep their weapon unsheathed the entire fight and it absolutely destroys your mobility.
It'll start feeling natural with practice. All of us veteran hunters were exactly like you feeling the exact same reactions when we first played. But invest the time to become proficient enough with your weapon of choice to do basic combos, and after a while it'll start feeling really good. You'll know exactly how long each attack takes, the animations involved, and you'll start planning it out in your head before you even strike. Overhead, overhead, thrust, upward slash, roundhouse slash with backward hop... it'll be permanently engrained in your mind.
I'll be giving this one a chance for sure as I've heard amazing things about the Monster Hunter series. I'll definitely give the demo a spin. I don't know if I'll pick up Rise day one, but it's definitely on my watch list!
I'm looking forward to more Monster Hunter Stories 2 news too. I quite enjoyed the first game, though I do hope the plot is a bit deeper this time around.
I am really hoping to splurge on this game when it releases, especially since it is built from the ground up with Nintendo Switch in mind!
Hopefully this will be better than MHW, which was a big let down for me as a long time fan. MH4U is still my fav.
Haven't touched my switch since like the beginning of the year. Can't wait to dust it off to try the demo. I recently hacked my 3ds and have been going through MH3U, it's been amazing.
But with Rise and stories 2 coming to pc, im gonna hold off on purchasing the game to see where it'll land. I'm hoping it might land on ps5 eventually but i won't hold my breath
@Yosher
I agree with @JaxonH on everything.
I don't think I have ever met a single person who didn't have a hard time getting into Monster Hunter, no matter how much they love the series now.
Combat system is probably the key... If you think about it, even something as simple as the fact that you have to sheath your weapon all the time during combat, which a new player probably won't do very much, is already unusual. This isn't too big of a deal for some weapons but a massive problem for other weapons.
I think weapon tutorials of Gaijin Hunter or Arekkz Gaming might be able to help a lot as well.
Not to learn every move, that might be going a bit far for starters (they will be outdated for Rise anyway...), getting a basic understanding of how a weapon is supposed to work is what you might get from them though.
Playstyle differs massively from weapon type to weapon type,
so finding the weapon you are most comfortable with should be step one.
As an example just how greatly different weapons can be:
Greatsword: hit and run weapon, you run around wait for an opening -> attack -> run away again
Lance: You try to always stay directly in the face of the monster, constantly attacking while blocking, or better countering everything the monster throws at you.
These are of course very much simplified descriptions of these two weapons. But on this very basic level they are already fundamentally different.
Looking forward to this, tho I think I’m the only one not looking forward to the wire bug stuff.
Day one.
Even if i don't intend to play it day one. I'm getting this fast.
@TheLightSpirit
Dang right lol.
Monster Hun-.... say no more. Day one!
@Judal27
It 100% for sure is not coming to PS5. As with all their previous portable titles, they are never ported to other consoles down the line. The only reason PC is involved now is because PC gets everything, and it makes no sense to have exclusives that dont also generate cash on PC, especially with the ballooning costs of higher production values. World went to PC after 9 months, and so will Rise (assuming Nintendo didnt work out a deal for full exclusivity, which is still possible- I dont think that's the case, but we can't rule it out yet).
But it's most definitely, certainly, without a shadow of a doubt, never coming to PS5. I say this as a PS5 owner. The leaks confirm it, too. PC will see the game in January 2022 (so basically a full year from now) since it's a 6 month to announcement, 9 month to release wait (just like World PC), and due to the C19 delay for Switch, pushes PC release to Christmas, and no games release on Christmas, so it'll be January 2022 as a late PC port. But no PS, and no Xbox. They were never even considered for this game, just like Switch was never considered for World. The leaks tell us everything, and confirm no other versions are in the works. And it's not even a result of some deal- they just never even considered any other platform.
Not sure why any Switch owner would want to play anywhere other than Switch anyways though. It looks absolutely stunning as is, and has the benefit of being both console and portable. Dont get me wrong, I'm a PC gamer and will definitely buy on PC too down the line just to support it, but I wont be playing it anywhere other than Switch (as if I could wait that long to play this anyways- I spent $60 on PS+ just to play the demo for World in 2018, not even the powers of the universe itself could keep me from playing this game come March 26th).
MH Stories 2 is also Switch/PC exclusive, again confirmed by the leaks.
@Yosher Hope you enjoy the demo and it works out for you either way. If you can find someone to learn the game with it's even better because you don't feel so isolated and confused as to some of the mechanics and systems in place. The way I see it, you can hit the ground running because this is all going to be so new for everyone that you should be able to find a couple hunting partners to play and practice with.
@JaxonH story is good and is true of a lot of players experience with the series. Mine included.
@crimsontadpoles your soooo lucky you forgot , iv been non stop thinking about it and the days are getting longer 😭🤣
@Upokupo @Yosher
Yup. Gonna be plenty of us in the Monster Hunter Rise NLife forum hunting together. It's a single player game through and through, but its also a multiplayer game through and through. With the best, most helpful community in all of gaming. Can hunt solo for a while, then move over to the hub and hunt with others for a while. Since its collaborative rather than competitive, everyone tends to help out and show new players the ropes. I still have friends to this day that I met while playing each Monster Hunter game.
Upokupo, when did you get into the series? Seems alot of people got in during the 3rd generation, though MH4U also brought in a lot of new western fans. Obviously we'll be seeing a lot of 5th Fleet hunters who started with World, too.
@JaxonH I hope to play with you some time. Lol. Your passion is fun to read and captures MH perfectly.
@JaxonH I got into it with 3U but got serious about it in 4U when I managed to convince someone to play with me (my brother). We chose that one because it had the online component to play with others. I've been longing to play this game ever since I experienced the demo on PS2. My budget didn't allow for me to get a PSP when the series started to take off plus I couldn't convince anyone to play with me. Now, I play regularly and my brother and my nephew are hooked on the series as well.
Definitely day one
@Upokupo
Nice. I forgot MH3U only had online in the Wii U version, unless you hamstrung your 3DS through a Wii U for wifi (at which point, why not just play on Wii U?).
Funny, I got my brother into the series with MH4U. Had been harping on about it for years. We'd go on to put hundreds of hours in together in MH World, and again in MHGU. We both bought Arctis 3 with Bluetooth headsets, which connect to Switch via headphone jack (just use extension to reach from docked Switch to recliner) and connect to your phone over bluetooth for Discord, and mixes the audio. It's the perfect $100 headset for Switch if you voice chat in Discord. There are more expensive Arctis headsets that are Wireless with a dedicated dongle, and also have bluetooth for Discord, but I wasn't prepared to spend $330 on the Arctis Pro just to have full wireless to Switch and phone simultaneously.
Do you play World on PC? If so, feel free to friend me on Steam (search for ActionJaxonH). I'm currently playing World again since my original playthrough was on PS... got tired of no gyro aiming and $60 online, so I bought a gaming PC and am replaying the game there. Free online, mapped gyro aiming when holding L for the slinger, 3D audio sounds incredivle in a headset.
Speaking of which, I sure hope Rise has good audio like World. Preferably 3D audio. The importance of quality audio in a MH title cannot be understated.
@Upokupo I remember that demo but when it come to finding the game I don't think I ever found it in the UK the first monster hunter think it came in devil may cry 2 box not sure was a very long time ago XD
cant wait to play this.
Well there's supposed to be a Rise demo this month, so there will logically be some new info as well.
@JaxonH Thank you from a true vet of the series. I have played MH since it's release on ps2. Loved each MH release on all systems. Those that what to shoot there mouths off all the time because of mechanics changes like from paint to flies....seriously wake up how are they different. When you paint a monster you can see where to go. How is that different from the scout flies? Hell the best part is the actual tracking of finding footprints and marks left by your target. That is as close to real hunting in real life. So best rule of thumb is if you don't want backlash do your research first before you shoot your mouth off and make a fool out of yourself Quix
@JaxonH the leaks are pretty much why I'm not holding my breath. But i don't mind holding off for a pretty long while considering I've got about four games worth of MH to get through on 3ds. And still haven't even played MHW plus the expansion
Im gonna need to try the demo to see for myself how it looks cause I just don't like how pixelated and blurry games look on switch. It's why I never bought DQ11 on it cause I played the demo on both switch and ps4 and the improvements were very noticeable. At least with the 3ds games, theyre on a pure handheld thats extremely weak compared to switch by default. If by then, nothing's announced or talked about ill just get it on switch. That's what i bought the switch for. For any and all exclusives that interest me
Plus Rise looks like another amazing MH. I hope the demo has hidden monsters to fight aside from the 3 hunts like the demos for MHW
Word of advice.
Even though it's probably true, I wouldn't make financial decisions based off of leaks.
@SephiroMyst
I actually really love the scoutflies. At first I wasn't sure how to feel about them, but they grew on me. I'm not sure they'd work well for a game like Rise, but for World, they're a perfect fit. The maps are so huge, so lush, so densely packed, that the scoutflies really do make you feel like you're hunting and tracking monsters.
We get an owl for Rise that can spot and identify monsters from the air. Reminds me of the blimp mechanic, in a way. Rise definitely has less of a focus on tracking down the monsters and more on exploring and jumping right into the action when you want. Which works perfectly for a portable system.
This is my dream game. I loved World, but it was TV only. I loved MHGU, but it wasn't modernized. MH Rise finally offers us that AAA Monster Hunter experience like World, and not just TV only like World or handheld only like MH4U, but both. Switch is a Godsend, it really is. What an epic console. They could stop making video games after March and I'd probably be ok just playing Rise and World the rest of my life
@Judal27
All the MH games are fantastic. But World is on another level. I'd definitely recommend playing that if you have it. I'm playing now- it's the only thing keeping my sanity while waiting for Rise.
As for Switch games, some are less than native res, for sure. But compared to what we had before on handhelds (240p 3DS and 540p Vita, where most games actually ran at 360p or 480p), Switch games look amazing. I thought DQXIS looked quite good on Switch. Obviously not as good as on PC, but good enough that it feels like the same experience, both docked and handheld.
But I will say, many games look super crisp and downright excellent on Switch. Just depends on the game. Sniper Elite 4, for example... I don't think I've seen a better looking handheld game my entire life. It legit looks like a PS4 version in your hands. Nice crisp 1080p docked, 720p handheld, Idk how they did it. Most of the 7th gen ports are the same way. Assassin's Creed, Borderlands, Bioshock, Sain'ts Row, Metro Redux, etc etc.
But Monster Hunter Rise looks absolutely insane on Switch. The footage keeps making people say "it's gotta be PC footage" because they just refuse to believe it's actually running on the Switch. Which... it is. Capcom confirmed all the footage they've shown is native Switch footage. Not PC, or a Switch Pro or anything of the sort. So I wouldn't worry about that. Rise is going to set the bar for best looking Switch game of all time, that much is clear.
@ChaosBadger777 Is a cross between World and GU. I say is more World than anything so you'll be good.
Too bad you didn't like GU but is understandable since GU is a much more difficult game
@JaxonH unfortunately can't call myself a big MH fan but I've played almost all the demos they've released for the series and loved them all. Just never got around to actually buying them for some reason lol. For sure World is another amazing entry into the series, i do plan to play it once Im done with all the 3ds games.
The trailers for rise have been amazing so far. It looks really nice and clean but that's what I thought about the DQ11 trailers, but the demo didn't look nearly the same. All the scenery fading in and out, from trees and barrels to the actual textures and windows on houses depending on how close you were to it, really put me off the switch version. That doesn't happen on the PS4 version of S
Everything else looks so good though, that i don't see myself not ever playing it, be it switch or pc or any other place. I'm really hoping khezu and gigginox get the update treatment. Its a shame they didn't for world
@Judal27
Khezu has been confirmed (which means Gigginox is likely out). They showed a brief half second clip of him in a Japan-exclusive commercial for the game. He looks good, as expected. Hopefully his moveset will be revamped for this game.
@JaxonH I don't have a gaming pc. I gave it up years ago. Got tired of trying to keep up with the demands of PC gaming. I do have a steam account and use discord. I'm Lukas Lykus#8032 on discord. I almost got the Arctis headset I will definitely look into that again. As for world, I hope to play that some more. Missed out on that title but managed to get to the area after the ancient forest. It seems like a fun experience once I started to figure that out. I've seen playthrough vids of Fatalis and it looks amazing.
As for the audio, yes it is a definite must to have good audio for MH. It makes a big difference.
AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH MONSTER HUNTER
Monster Hunter Rise is the main reason I recently bought a Switch. I'll be there day 1 and stay through the end of the updates.
@Upokupo
I know what you mean- that was one thing that kept me from playing on PC for a long time- when your rig isn’t even as good as your console, it doesn’t seem too appealing to play.
That’s why I said screw it, sucked it up and just went all out, bought a new PC with Nvidia RTX 2080 ti GPU, Intel i9 9900k CPU with water pump, 32GB RAM and 10TB total SSD space. Which, a year was the best money could buy. Sure, 3080s are out now for half the price of the 2080 ti and offer 50% more power, but what I learned is, if you just go bleeding edge, that’ll last a good 7 years running games at 4k 60 ultra, dropping down to 1440p 60 ultra as time goes on and games get more demanding, which is still plenty good enough for me. Maybe 10 years from now, if the day comes I can’t do 1440p 60fps ultra anymore, I’ll just sell it and buy a new PC (don’t wanna deal with incremental upgrades). I expect PCs to last longer between upgrades now as we approach diminishing returns and the benefits of DLSS continue to make games less demanding to run.
It was pricy, which means it’s not a solution for everyone, but it feels so good not having to worry about settings anymore. Just max everything out, every time (then again, with the amazing low cost of 3070s at $500, one could get a PC better than mine for $1500 now, granted, without the 10 TB SSD storage). I was a console gamer for so many decades, but now I look back and wonder why it took me so long to just make the jump. Set it up to my tv like a console, have one of those slim wireless keyboards with built in touchpad on the right I keep next to my recliner for easy access as needed, but Dualshock 4 controller controls cursor like a mouse as long as Steam is running, even minimized. So I rarely need the keyboard unless typing something. Gyro aiming on the slinger is amazing- so glad Rise has confirmed gyro aiming.
Anyways, I sent a Discord friend request to Lucas#8032 (think you spelled it wrong, there was no Lykus#8032, so I used Lucas#8032). Will definitely be in the MH Rise forum for the demo and at launch to play MP. Always down to voice chat with anyone who wants, but I like playing without it too, sometimes. Rise has those voiced shoutouts you can send to communicate, which is pretty awesome.
@JaxonH
Dang! That's a nice rig you have. I may return in the near future to PC. But will try it your way. 7 years is a good amount of time.
It's Lukas Lykus#8032 Lukas with a K and a space in between. If the space doesn't work, then it's one string: LukasLykus#8032
@Upokupo
Ah, got it. I had spelled it wrong ☺
Ya, I'm a sucker for the console like experience. Can't stand using a keyboard/mouse or sitting at a desk, and definitely dont wanna deal with perpetual upgrades. The upfront cost is more, to me its worth it. Just having free online ($420 saved over 7 years right there) and virtual mouse mapped to any game within seconds (priceless) and not having to deal with settings optimizations or upgrades for a long time, to me is well worth the buy in. Computer Upgrade King (CUK) has legit deals with tons of options, each gives you a limited range of upgrade options for that price range.
Hope to see you in the Monster Hunter Rise forum when the demo drops. Only a few more weeks!
Deluxe Edition and all the amiibo are preordered and paid off at GameStop. Hope I don’t miss any preorder bonuses from the digital version. I can’t wait to play this with my local friends like old times.
@Shiro28 I disliked how you had to stand still to drink potions and could run out of basic items (like a whet stone) during a hunt in GU.
I'm optimistic about Rise, just hope the online is fun - will definitely miss voice chat though.
@JaxonH Look fair enough, not gonna bash anyone for liking the game, is Good, Is just didn't feel like Monster Hunter, became a generic game that lost what made it unique. I'm a monster hunter fanboy far most than anything, I go where ever monster hunter goes and screw the cost or system. I don't bash games I haven't played or beaten I personally spent over 400 dollars to play Worlds alone, but they did exactly what I didn't want em to do , what a lot of veterans didn't want em to do. Go on Steam, after Worlds novelty wore off all the true reviews started to show up and a big spike down hit Worlds and only went up a few after Iceborn. I can right a book of everything they removed from Worlds, not including the convoluted mess just to play online was, and even with the addition of Iceborn the roster was hardly anything to shake a stick at compare to other monster Hunters. They touched the core of the game and removed a lot of the formulas and complexity they game original had so I don't know what you are talking about. But I can easily break down Worlds for you compare to MHGU and you can easily see the World's was a mediocre game at best compare to the other MH, hidden behind high end graphics and beautiful scenery. Now if they can keep the core mechanics intact, and gives us those nice graphics, and polish animation, then you will really have the Monster Hunter we all want. Which I'm hopping Rise will deliver. =:3
@ChaosBadger777 Speak for yourself, World's novelty wore off really quick and many of us jumped back to MHGU. Capcom had the right Idea of keeping the real monster hunter on the switch and creating a new series for those who love eye candy. Hope Rise get the real treatment we all truly wanted, seamless maps and updated animations, but leave everything that made MH unique intact, unlike worlds. =:3
@Quix I got bored with how easy it was to cheese hunts in GU compared to World - just stick to the edges of the map and roll between loading screens to sharpen and heal or lay traps as you always spawned in front of the monster. The online was also better in World as you could chat with people as you looked for the monster or devise strategies for which order to tackle multiple hunts on the map. I'm not sure how that is going to work in Rise as you can't voice chat or send messages to people.
Looking at the sales figures, I doubt Caocom will be in a rush to jump back to the older formula just to appease a handful of elitist fanboys.
GU sold around 3.7 million
World sold 21.9 million for base game and a further 5.8 million for the Icebourne expansion.
Apparently the more "casual" approach makes them significantly more money and I doubt they are going to just throw that away.
@ChaosBadger777
It's not a more casual approach, it's just no longer an overly obtuse approach. Long time fans were so used to MH being overly obtuse (there's a reason it never took off in the west until World) that it only seemed to be more casualized once that obtuse nature was removed. But MH World is just as hardcore as any MH before it.
Btw, World base game sold 16 million, and Iceborne another 5.8. The 21 million and change is both base game and Iceborne combined. Not that it changes anything. Once you're counting tens of millions, your point has been well made.
@JaxonH I was just going off what I keep getting told about World being more Casual.
That was my first entry to the series and I fell in love with the gameplay loop and I've dropped 100'd of hours into it so far (I previously scratched my grinding itch on Destiny and D2)
I tried to go back to GU but it just felt clunky after World, which I guess is what you meant by it being overly obtuse.
@ChaosBadger777
Right. And that's what turned alot of people away from the series prior to World.
Which, don't get me wrong. MHGU is a masterful game, and is still my 2nd favorite MH game of all time (which, given World is my favorite GAME of all time, that puts MHGU pretty high up the list as well). But it is obtuse in many ways. It's a hard barrier for some people to overcome. Once you play for a while you acclimate, and the game opens up to become an absolute juggernaut of fun. It's just hard for many people to get to that point.
I've been telling people for a while that World's success (particularly, the surge in new players) came from all the disenfranchised Destiny 2 players at the time who were looking for another co-op game to fill the void. Obviously the retention was low (Iceborne sales are back within expected norms of previous sales trends) but it still did wonders for bulking up the playerbase in the west. Now its Rise's turn to bulk up the Japanese playerbase, though I imagine quite a few new western players will be jumping in as well.
Its a leap forward for Switch. Its the first game using the RE engine but customized specially from the scratch for the console. Wish they could make a RE game as well but i don't see it happen (Revelations sold 0,89 millions worldwide on 3DS which is not enough for an AAA exclusive)
@JaxonH wow do you know which trailer? I forget you always have to watch out for any exclusive footage in japanese trailers lol
nice i can't wait to play Monster Hunter Rise in my extended battery Switch, in my birthday in early april.
@Judal27
Check the Monster Hunter Rise forum. Its in the most recent page of posts, I believe.
@JaxonH I hope gig is back I loved the look of his armour then kazhu and the HH was a coffin on a stick XD just loved it🙂
All of those you demanding Exclusives for Switch but then claiming you'll wait for a PC port that's come from a poor rumor source truly are hilarious.
@Quix Will you stop talking about "the veterans" ? Who made you the spokesperson?
Me and the boys play world still to this day. And so do many others. If it were barebones we probably would have stopped after 50 hours.
Already pre-ordered!!! 🤪
@Kirgo @JaxonH
I admire the passion I read in your words and I too feel the same about MH. I started in Tri and fell in love with it. I was all over MH4U like it would be last game to play in my lifetime. I was so into it that when Generations 3DS came out I didn't make the jump because I just couldn't let go of MH4U and everything I did in that game. I purchased a Switch just for MHGU at the time and I admit I was emotionally distraught for a little bit letting go of MH4U finally. I don't have a gaming PC or Xbox/PS4 so I skipped World by default. I'm so ready for Rise because it really looks like a best of both worlds and then some. MHGU is still my main game (HR 889) so as much as I want Rise I'm sure it will hit me again when I move on from MHGU (especially my Valor style GS & HBG setups)
@RustedHero
There's no other game like it. I don't hesitate to make the claim that Monster Hunter is the best video game series of all time. And that's not said lightly. MH3U was the first time I played such a complex game, and it took over my life.
I've never been this hyped for a game before in my entire life. This is the one. This is the game we've been waiting for since the launch of the Switch. A proper, modern, AAA Monster Hunter without loading zonea... I may never play another game again in my life! Except for future MH games 😂
@JaxonH That's why the last few months I've made an attempt at clearing out some of the backlog. Just like what happened with MHGU I know once I get Rise anything else won't be touched. I didn't properly branch out with all the Switch as to offer in games until I put in a ridiculously amount of time in MHGU. A lot of time and progress.
@Mr-Fuggles777 Gotcha, just that could turn many people away from the game, specially if their first game was World which is consider by many veterans as the easiest MH game. I hope Rise is as challenging as classic MH with a little of World QOL. Example- loading areas are gone, yes you can move while using items. Harvest/Fishing quest are gone yes! I'm still on the fence about refreshing your items during quest.
@Shiro28 Being able to swap weapons during a hunt is a must for me - imagine joing a quest and having 4 hunters with the same weapon and no way to swap load outs.
How else would you maximise multiple hunts in an area if you couldn't swap weapons between kills to exploit Monster weaknesses? (for example doing an expedition, you have to swap out as you can't prepare for which monster spawns and when)
@Mr-Fuggles777 And that's the whole point of it.
I am someone who was prepared everytime before a hunt. Do I have enough pots? traps are with me? how about some flashbombs?
Communicated with the team and strategize - "ok so you're gunning and give support? perfect how about a hammer user to stunt it? no? ok, you're a HH user?! yes please! ok we ready? no backing out now! let's do this!
Stuff like this doesn't happen in World because well, the SOS flare. just join and you're set. Why do you think the hub is always empty? When you go to an expedition, just take a para/poison weapon or a non-elemental weapon with high attack and/or affinity and you'll be fine, been doing it since MH3.
You beat a monster with only the amount of items you can carry, with good co-operation with your party and you will feel an incredible sense of reward.
Now before you jump to any conclusion, I am not bashing World or anything since is not really a bad game, is a great game actually. But some of us veterans feel that World lost some of the charm that classic MH have always had, a charm that I believe and hope Rise is bringing back. Let's hope we hunt together some day in Rise dude!
