Netflix appears to have given the game away on a brand new 3D Sonic animated series a little earlier than planned.
The streaming service announced the new show on its @NXOnNetflix Twitter handle, before very quickly deleting the tweet and choosing to stay away from the topic since. The post read, "Rings? Check. Sneakers? Check. Speed? SONIC. SEGA’s legendary video game icon Sonic the Hedgehog races onto Netflix in a new 3D animated series from @SEGA, @WildBrainHQ and @ManOfActionEnt premiering in 2022."
You can see a screenshot of the original tweet below.
You'll know Sega, of course, but as for the other companies involved, Wild Brain owns series like Teletubbies, Degrassi, and Inspector Gadget, while Man of Action is a writer collective known for projects such as Ben 10 and Big Hero 6.
Sonic has already found silver screen success this year after his live-action film surpassed $200 million at the box office in just ten days. A sequel to that has already been confirmed, so a Netflix series probably makes sense too, right?
We're assuming the show will be revealed again – but properly this time – at a later date. Would you be excited to see a new 3D Sonic animation, or are you not feeling it? Share your thoughts with us below.

This happens a lot lately
Weird to yank back something positive like this with them losing some big shows to Peacock and the price hike coming in the new year. And following the Cuties hoopla.
Man of Action's most recent work was Mega Man Fully Charged, a 52 episode long series that felt like a retread of Ben 10 with a heavily westernised take on the Mega Man franchise, arguably more-so than the Ruby Spears cartoon.
Still, I'm curious to see what they'll do. Where Sonic Boom ended up being such a comedic show, Man of Action as the studio's name suggests, deals more in action. That could be just what Sonic needs.
It's almost like they leak these on purpose...
I guess it makes sense, things get added to Netflix in huge batches but they should just be honest about it. Give us a nice trailer or something!
When will these studios realize no one wants a 3D sonic show. No one. Just expand sonic mania... please.
@Curbie "Something positive" is an early call. Usually Sonic cartoons are either Meh or Terribad.
@RupeeClock Granted, Mega Man is a hard sell and a tough script. Sonic's an easier IP to work with.
If they do it the right way sure why not, wouls like that.
@KingBowser86
I'm not really sure what's difficult about Mega Man.
It's an appealing concept, robots fighting robots in monster of the day fashion.
Where Fully Charged failed was that it wasn't really faithful to the source material. Huge liberties were taken and designs weren't very strong, like their version of Air Man looking more like Wind Man, and their version of Guts Man being a glutton instead of being a gutsy personality.
GOTTA DELETE FAST!
It's a long ways off, but I'd really like to see some of the newer characters (Blaze, Silver, Omega) that didn't get to be in previous shows.
Hopefully this being NF means they don't have to do dumb things like change the designs and personalities of the characters. Then just try and get the better voice actors back, like Lisa Ortiz, Amy Palant, Jason Griffith, etc.
"...Teletubbies, Degrassi, and Inspector Gadget."
I'm pretty confused by how radically different all these types of programming are. But then oddly enough, each one kind of fits together almost perfectly to make a Sonic series.
Wait...2022? Yeah, maybe they should hold off on the announcement?
It's just a teaser, it seems to be a trend nowadays
The Internet does not forget.
Sonic has run its course. Just let it die, SEGA.
@Strictlystyles How are the problem from the 3D games going to carry to the 3D tv show? Your comment comes off as ignorant
@RupeeClock You'd think it wouldn't be hard given the wealth of source material but it is difficult to make into an engaging show.
Long story short, Mega Man classic is engaging because of the fast-paced action and platforming. Mega Man spends very little time at the lab or around humans. The Archie comics added more interactions and did it well, can't say the same for Fully Charged.
Now if we're talking about any of the other variants, those have way more opportunities for interactions and dialogue.
Their 3DCGi shows are a really mixed bag, curious to see where this'll land in the mix. Not a Sonic fan myself, but some of the DS games were pretty fun and I did love the movie, so maybe this'll be a pleasant surprise.
Netflix had to go fast to delete the tweet
Also worth mentioning: WildBrain, while owning the series mentioned in the article, ALSO acquired DiC some years ago. DiC is the studio that produced the Sonic SatAM and Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog series. There's some actual lineage here.
@MimoDX2 ok if you want to go that route, the 2d games are rated higher than the 3D ones soooo.....
Anyway a game and a show are two different things. It takes a huge budget to make a good 3D anything and movies barely pull it off. A 3D tv show usually uses some lazy 3D animation and won’t do sonic any justice, Just look at sonic boom(only the writing saved it)
Like I said an expanded sonic mania anime would do sonic 100x’s more justice than a 3D show.
Don't get it. There was nothing wrong with Sonic Boom. Why not just build on that?
I could be wrong, but it feels like a Netflix has fallen off. I’m not seeing a lot of buzz surrounding them, these days. My debit card expired and Netflix couldn’t charge me. Didn’t think twice about not renewing it.
Twitter needs warning labels. Stuff like this can destroy shows. Tweets destroyed Roseanne.
Social media in general is a mess.
@Strictlystyles Tell that to my kids.
They loved the Sonic Boom TV series, as many of their school friends did, and have rewatched it a number of times.
It's not targetted for us grumpy adults, it's for kids and helps them get into a franchise they may not be so familiar with and parents are often happy for them to watch because we enjoyed Sonic back in the day. It's all a good thing.
@Daniel36 Exactly. The negative views from adult critics and touchy fans shouldn't deflect from the fact it was a good series and children really enjoyed it.
@Kienda baby shark shows that kids will enjoy damn near anything and only realize later it sucked. It still doesn’t change the fact that 3d shows are often lazily produced and a product no one actually asked for. Like I said before only the writing really saved sonic boom.
However, people have been asking for more 2d animated sonic since satAM.
@Strictlystyles I disagree with you on that. Baby Shark is a classic.
In the future, people are going to walk down the isle to that music, I tell ya!
Anyways, I think you are talking on behalf of too many. People do want a 3D Sonic TV series, some want a 2D one. Most of us don’t care that much, we just want a good show for our children because we are not the target audience.
To us gamers though we don’t really care about the TV show, we want a new Sonic game. Personally, I want a decent 3D Sonic like Sonic Adventure.
We all have different likes and dislikes. They aren’t going to win with everyone. But I don’t mind them trying things.
@Kienda I don’t know many people in the sonic fandom begging for a 3d sonic. I totally disagree on that. Are there people who loved sonic boom sure and I get it the writing was great and def not aimed at children in that aspect, but nobody asked for a 3d sonic show. Nobody ever did, just more satAM type of stuff.
@chocolate_supra In specifics, WildBrain is owned by DHX, who bought out Cookie Jar in 2013 or so, who bought out DiC in 2008
2022? Oof I won’t even be the same person then.
Still, exciting!
THAT's No Gooood
I'm a teenager and there were specific sonic boom episodes that I quite liked it was a good show, could've been better but it was still good. I would rather have a 2D sonic BUTTTTT if they can pull it off 3D would be really cool too
Sega has been being kinda dumb lately though, still waiting on that "Game currently in production" that they've only ever mentioned once and cancelled the interview for it
Ok how about a little less sonic lore and a little more 2D games please. I mean PLEASE, we all already made sonic mania the biggest release and they don't seem willing to follow it up.
You all know I love sonic so you know I can't wait for this.
@Twili_Waker and it seems this tactic works. Twice as many article about it and you create come kind of buzz.
To me it feels like someone saying "oh I wanted to tell you that... You know what? Nevermind". Not worth creating a news about it.
@atomicjuicer Roseanne ruined Roseanne.
@Rhaoulos exactly like that!
i wonder if its going to be one of the more serious plot driven ones like sonic x or one of the more episodic comedy based ones like sonic boom.
either way, not keeping the expectations to high. animated sonic series tend to be hit and miss and just using cgi can break a series.
especially if its as bad berserk 2017....
@Strictlystyles I thought you were saying that a 3D show can't work because the 3D sonic games have problems (which makes no sense, but believe it or not, someone on this very site did make a comment like that, and they meant it!), i thought you were the one going that route but now i understand what you were trying to say.
Damn this ***** site! I didn't even mean to click on this crappy article! Now you got links jumping around! Are you trying to make this site as unappealing as possible?!
