For the very first time, the Japanese-published manga series Super Mario-kun has been localised for an English-speaking audience, with a new book being released across North America and Europe.
The series, written by Yukio Sawada and regularly published in Japan's CoroCoro magazine, has been putting its own crazy spin on the Mario franchise since 1991. It's been running for over 50 volumes and has featured stories based on Mario classics like Paper Mario, Super Mario Sunshine, and more – you might remember that it even inspired one of the costumes available in Super Mario Maker.
The new English-language book is titled 'Super Mario Manga Mania' and includes a selection of stories from Sawada's series. Those of you in the US can grab a copy right now from Amazon or Walmart, while those in Europe will have to wait a little longer (Amazon UK says it'll launch in January).
From crazy to classic, Mario and his friends star in adventures that find them traveling through the many worlds of one of the biggest video game series ever!
Gamespot reports that the book features ten stories, two bonus short stories, and will be more than 160 pages long in total. Perhaps this could be an ideal Christmas present?

Hello, Mario.
The Amazon UK link goes to Amazon.com instead, as there isn't an official Amazon UK listing for the item (just third-party). As a substitute, I think putting the Book Depository link (https://www.bookdepository.com/Super-Mario-Manga-Mania-Yukio-Sawada/9781974718481?ref=grid-view&qid=1607947739165&sr=1-1). Not only does it fulfil NL's requirement for putting as many Amazon-affiliate links (as BD is Amazon-owned), it actually ships world-wide too (and is the first link listed when loooking at the Amazon link).
That's not totally true. It's the first English translation, but there is a Western localization already. I'm actually the proofreader of the Spanish edition, with 20 issues already out.
@Moroboshi876 is that an official localization?
Yes! No fan translations of this exist online for some reason, so I'm getting it ASAP!
Aw yis, been low key waiting for this and I'm looking forward to it now. I hope they localize all of them eventually.
Is this the one with Wario's origin story? If so, I might take a look. Otherwise, I probably won't pick it up for a few years.
@CEObrainz Yes, it is. You can search by "Super Mario Aventuras" in Amazon and you'll see it. I tried Amazon UK and there's a couple results of that edition.
the funniest thing ever is seeing the amazon reviews talking about how the book is bound wrong.
The us Amazon link goes to the UK store. Here’s the US store: Super Mario Manga Mania https://www.amazon.com/dp/1974718484/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_gU21Fb8AP2NT3
@CEObrainz There is also a french edition, "Super Mario Manga Adventures", out from 2014 to 2019. So sad they stopped it after the 20th volume
only until 3/31 of course but that's no surprise is it
I hope it gets a digital release.
So you WERENT impaled be Sephiroth
hideous cover art, but cool! might actually grab this
And just WHY is Mario being depicted without his portliness, his happy chubby belly?? Are the Japanese forcing their body standards on this Italian-American man??
@Shnaps And the French version was translated by Nintendo historian, Florent Gorges.
I bought a few volumes in French (my native language) but I have to admit that I didn't really enjoy it. It is not the way I imagine Mario outside of the games and the design is far from Kotabe design.
@ludotaku
I really loved them. I would have liked to have the full collection but sadly, it seems that they stopped it forever...
I hope they translate the part where Mario's penis is exposed 😈
Next a Mario Anime!
@Moroboshi876 Nice!
@alexybubble Thats the Mario comic. They recently rereleased it.
@BoyfriendOfDeath I actually have checked out a few scanlations in the past, but they only do the first few or so chapters (which are based on SMW)
@mrmememan Unfortunately, that's a completely separate manga
I honestly really hope they do a rerelease of the Valiant comics
This manga is kinda weird like, I didn't think Nintendo would have approved a licensed series where Mario urinates on Yoshi but here we are.
@mrmememan what? are you serious? they will problaby censor this part.
why they took so long to release this manga here?
@Giancarlothomaz Yes I'm serious look it up
Oh this looks fun!
@mrmememan Again, that's from a different manga, it's called KC Mario and is chock-full of crazy ***** like that
@mrmememan что за херня
I'm surprised it has never been published in UK. The Mario-kun Manga has been published in France (in French) and it's not that good...
It's been out in the States for about a week. I got it for my son for Christmas, but I have flipped through it. There's a warning before one story that there's a death of a parent in it, which is...not a direction I'd expect a Mario comic to go.
Still, I like the idea that it covers multiple Mario games. In Japan, the most recent arc covers Luigi's Mansion 3.
@The-Nate Oh dang. I kinda forgot. The artstyles are pretty similar so I got kinda confused
I've had it for awhile, I'd give it a 9/10. Really funny.
