If you're wondering, Momotaro Dentetsu is a board game-style series from Konami which has players becoming the president of a railroad company. It's been number one in the country's physical chart for two weeks too, so it doesn't come as a shock to see it sitting in first place here.
If you're interested in keeping tabs on the top games in Japan, make sure to watch out for our weekly chart updates. We also recently shared our personal top picks for eShop games released last month.
Any surprises in that top 20? Tell us below.

Nice to see Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin so high up on the list. Such a great game.
Have to admit, I am interested about the Momotaro Densetsu game. I know it is very Japanese but it sells a really impressive amount. Might have to test my Japanese ability out and import it.
I like Hyrule Warriors a lot. I’ll admit, I like Musou games well enough (remind me of Gauntlet), so that’s not saying too much. Just feel like it’s a shame that despite an expertly crafted zelda tie in, really cool new divine beast gameplay, and overwhelmingly positive reviews it probably won’t have ultimate sales numbers anywhere near what my biased opinion feels it’s worth.
Go Sakunahime! Glad it is doing well.
I always wonder how the momotaro series got started. Because Hudson soft went a bit nuts. Still momotetsu is really weird. Like who was sitting in a room and went “mythical hero born from a peach x TRAINS= brilliant!” ? I mean the momoden and the momotetsu series are both insane but at least momoden started out with just folklore before it went off the rails.
That being said I will likely buy it eventually since I like train games.
Animal Crossing 9th?! What a bomb.
@Roam85
It is already the best selling Warriors game ever and will probably hit the 5/6 million mark lifetime.
I am sure KT and Nintendo are pleased with the sales.
Smash didn't release in 2019.

Good to see some Western games (Abzu and Overcooked 2) in the charts.
@Ryu_Niiyama
"Off the rails"! LOL. Good one.
@TheLightSpirit It's not bizarre at all. The Wii U was a flop console and the Switch has significantly more players, so it will be like a new game for most people.
@TheFullAndy Animal Crossing New Horizons a bomb? the game is already the second best/highest selling Switch game at 26.44 milions units sold until now and can become the highest selling Switch game, in the end of the first half of 2021,where did you get that Animal Crossing New Horizons is a bomb?
@Giancarlothomaz
It was a joke.
@Professorgenius why thank you!
Trains are a very big deal in Japan. You can think of the train fans as similar to muscle car fans in the US. There's a really big following for them and lots of hobbyist groups. It's no shocker that games pop up to cater to said crowd.
At least copy of Abzu was me!
@TheFullAndy i see, i need to stop be so naive for that.
@Giancarlothomaz
No worries bud!
