Nintendo of America has sent out a press release about its record sales in the United States last month.
According to NPD data, October 2020 sales for the Switch are the "second-highest October sales of any video game console in history" within this region.
The system shifted more than 735,000 units between the Switch and Switch Lite - that's growth of 136% compared to the same month of the previous year.
Here's what Nintendo of America president, Doug Bowser, had to say about this milestone:
“Seeing encouraging sales growth like this in the fourth October of Nintendo Switch proves to us that the system has many more years and great games yet to come.”
The Nintendo Wii still holds the record for the month of October, with 807,000 units sold back in 2008.
This latest sales record for Switch also continues its streak as the best-selling video game console for 23 consecutive months (the most months in a row for any console since NPD began tracking sales numbers).
NPD data reveals the Switch has now sold more than 22.5 million units in the US to date, and according to the latest Nintendo figures as of September this year, it's had 68.30 million sales worldwide.

The Wii's best global sales was its 4th Christmas quarter in 2009, with over 11 million. The Switch is currently in its 4th Christmas quarter. The Wii sold around 3.5 million in the quarter before its 4th Christmas quarter, and the Switch sold 6.8 in the same. Doing some quick math, that means the Switch should sell around 21-22 million this quarter. That won't happen of course, but 15 million sounds reasonable.
Does anybody actually care about Nintendo’s sales figures, outside of Nintendo employees?
INB4 "it needs a price drop".
@TG16_IS_BAE Shareholders also care about sales figures, for obvious reasons.
As for gamers, probably not so much. Although, if you consider how poorly the WiiU sold in comparison, this is a good time to be a Nintendo fan. Large sales figures will only benefit the Switch, moving forward.
damn, I feel like the switch will outsell the Wii...maybe even the DS but that may be going too far, unless???
@TG16_IS_BAE I’ve been kicking around this place off and on for a few years and there’s definitely some folks around here who spend more time obsessing over sales than playing games.
@the4seer Large sales don’t benefit me, I don’t get any of the money.
@faint It’s the “my team is winning!” mentality.
@TG16_IS_BAE Seems irrelevant as long as Steam exists, but what do I know
@TG16_IS_BAE Yes, lots of people.
@faint That's a meaningless statement.
@napabar Is it? Steam is a platform holder that sells games.
@TG16_IS_BAE Unless you were actually expecting to be paid, I don't see how that is even relevant.
Just because you're not getting paid doesn't mean that you don't benefit from Nintendo's success... I mean, assuming that you buy Switch games.
An increase in hardware sales figures would result in an increase in the install base. That alone makes the Switch much more attractive to third party developers.
An increase in software sales figures would result to more sequels or dlc, typically.... Maybe spin-offs.
Again, assuming that you actually buy Nintendo Switch games, the financial success of the console definitely benefits you.
Everyone and their grandmother is just waiting for the PlayStation 5 to be in supply. All those people who bought a Switch in 2020 are going to be trading in all these sold units, resulting in -3 million Switch sales for the rest of the year.
Animal Crossing was just a fad, and women and children will soon return to their phones and leave gaming to serious hardcore gamers like myself. There will be piles of discarded RingCons and Mario Kart Live RC cars filling up the deserts of Western Arizona. Nintendo will finally succumb to bankruptcy and be bought by Apple in order to make Super Mario Run 2.
Stop doing so well... I want a new Nintendo console revision
@faint What's that got to do with your statement?
@westman98 I'm sorry, but why are you on this website?
@napabar did you bother reading what I was replying too?
@auck seemed like a joke comment to me
@TG16_IS_BAE Only that it hopefully leads to better quality and more games from 3rd parties in the future (the last half of 2020 hasn’t largely born this out, yet.. but that may be because of a certain Pandemic).
@faint Agreed!!!
@westman98 I love this comment.
@the4seer Nintendo has already abandoned this system.
@faint Yes. You're a self described Steam fanbois who lingers in competitors forums to be a troll.
@faint You seem like a joke to us. Now, shoo! Move along!
@TG16_IS_BAE Stay off the Drano.
@napabar who said I was a fanboy of anything?
@faint It’s like a Nintendo cult is trying to shout us down. Reminds me of Kotaku commenters. What a strange knee jerk reaction to sales figures, of all things.
I recently bought a Switch Lite so you're welcome Nintendo.
Considering Nintendo (NTDOY) is a publicly-traded company, I would say there is probably some small interest in how their hardware sales were this quarter. In other news, I've made more than $20 per share since taking the dip.
@TG16_IS_BAE Yes, there's actually people investing their share in Nintendo. Would be a shame if they stopped sharing their sale success and start being silence then shareholders will be shaking in their boots and Nintendo's shares will began to dropped.
Ridiculous sales numbers! Crazy demand but people think switch needs a price drop lol
Switch is in beast mode! It will outsell the PS4 life time sales without doubt.
@TG16_IS_BAE damn son! Stop being a hater. Can tell it's killing you seeing Nintendo switch selling like crazy
@kobashi100 It's okay to hate on Nintendo, they don't cuddle up to you.
@Retro_Player_77 If a shareholder is looking for that information, I don't think NL is the best place for that.
@JasmineDragon Its already $200 cheaper than next gen consoles and has a huge library of games. Until sales slow down, there is no need for Nintendo to cut the price.
@westman98 lol
This is good news, I dunno how much longer this will keep up, I can see Nintendo still having a good holiday regardless of the fact that the next generation has kicked off, purely because of availability, PS5's going to have limited availability until at least after Christmas which should give Nintendo the edge for a few more months.
But by mid next year I do see sales somewhat falling off a cliff, especially if Pro rumors don't pan out. Even with a pro though, they'll likely only be able to attract existing Switch owners from that point, i could be wrong but with the way the new consoles are looking, I'll put my money on this scenario playing out.
But like I said, I could be wrong, 2021 will be an interesting year for gaming though.
Edit: even if that scenario plays out and Nintendo can only attract existing Switch owners to purchase a Pro (if there is a Pro in the works), then they'll still get 40-60% of existing Switch owners to upgrade, quite easily I think, which would give them a lifetime console sale of anywhere from 100m-130m.
Which would be a total success.
I'm curious if the Switch will have its crown finally taken this month with the new PS and Xbox system launches or if it'll hold on due to all the Black Friday deals running. Not that I want it or any of the other consoles to fail, just curious what the outcome will be. Stay tuned!
The 3DS has sold just over 23 million units lifetime in the US.
With over 22.5 million units sold by the end of October, it looks like the Switch could overtake the 3DS in lifetime sales in the US before Black Friday week even begins.
It prints money!
@Razer while I do hope they come out with a pro to keep the switch fresh, I don’t see the switch competing with sony and ms like you do. I think just as the ds and 3ds can exist and succeed among the more powerful home consoles so can the switch. With Nintendo getting to the end of their Wii U ports I do hope they have some big plans for the next couple of years (outside of the few games we know of).
Nintendo needs more development capability. They certainly have the funds to make this happen.
@TG16_IS_BAE I’ve been a Nintendo fan since like 1989. Nintendo’s health as a company is important to me because it translates to them continuing to exist and giving me more of what I love, that being Nintendo systems and games. So yeah, I definitely care about their financial viability.
@TG16_IS_BAE “It’s like a Nintendo cult is trying to shout us down.”
Do you suck at reading or do you just enjoy being obtuse? Look at the address bar at the top of your screen. Look at what it says up there. Look at the header on the homepage of this website.
You’re on a site called Nintendo Life. Let that sink in, and then crawl back to PushSquare or wherever else your natural environment is, because this place clearly ain’t meant for you.
@BAN It says Nintendo Life, not Nintendo Cult. Some people on this site are acting rabidly because someone said something mean about the team they like. You could try calming down, might suit you a little better.
@BAN I’ve been a Nintendo fan since 1988.
@Nehalem you are not so wrong, I mean to older gamers like us, sure... but you see, we are the minority here. you may not see it that way but it's just a simple case of that's just how it is.
Imagine this: a mother who has two 14 and 16 year old children, it's coming up to Christmas and both want a new console.
She hears all this noise about the latest new gaming console and you know what that noise is? It's the PS5/XBox Series X. It was the Nintendo Switch but not anymore, we can safely say that the new consoles have arrived. With it, a lot of noise that will attract Christmas shoppers. Particularly mother's.
She also can kill two birds with one stone because she can get both her son's one console to share. Which they can.
You see the problem is... Parents don't think like we do.
And if you think we out number them then you are simply flat out wrong.
So ultimately we may not see them as competing but the fact that a mother will choose to buy her son's a PS5 or the XBOX over a Nintendo Switch in the coming holiday seasons, means they are definitely competing. And there will be millions more mother's making that choice than us older gamers making ours.
@Nehalem I mean... Another way to look at this is the other side... If you think the PS5 won't impact the Switch's sales...
Tell me why then, did the Switch impact the PS4 sales? Because it did. I mean if the Switch's sales are not effected by the PS5 then surely the PS4 should have been left unaffected by the Switch... But that wasn't the case.
@TG16_IS_BAE Nintendo investors (like me) and people who just enjoy sales figures (also like me)
@Retro_Player_77 they are dropping randomly from time to time anyway lol
Especially right after the are crushing the estimated earnings lol
Hope everyone realises that all 3 consoles will sell well. Y'know, like they did this generation. PS5 and XBox isn't going to cut into Switch sales. And vice versa. (I would argue XBox and PS5 will eat into each other. They seem to be the same thing)
@Razer
But the Switch did not impact PS4 sales. In fact, PS4 sales peaked the year the Switch released (2017).
Don't expect PS5 or XSX to impact Switch sales.
@westman98 I can see these comments getting heated, and I generally agree team X/N/P/PC is irrelevant. Not piling on here, but I want to point out a (possible) flaw in the logic of your most recent comment.
Without direct knowledge of consumer's minds we can't say whether or not the Switch impacted PS4 sales. But the evidence you provide, could also be evidence that Switch in fact DID impact PS4 sales.
It is widely known that Switch was extremely supply constrained in 2017 (through early 2018, and longer in some cases). Every unit shipped also sold.
One could argue, using the same statement (I haven't personally verified it) that the PS4 peaked in 2017 that once Switches became generally available they resulted in steady declines in PS4 sales leading to it peaking the year before Switch broad availability (2017).
And, in terms of industry trends, I think the bigger impact on new console uptake is the likely ongoing economic recession from COVID & lockdowns, limited international trade, the near-death of the service sector (the actual death of the travel sector), and increased demand for government provided healthcare, leading to either increased taxation or sovereign debt issues that would affect disposable income for frivolities like videogames.
@shazbot
2017 was the PS4's 4th year on the market. It was inevitable that sales would start declining in 2018 and beyond as it steadily began to approach market saturation.
Even then, PS4 sales didn't drop too hard the following year (20.2 million units sold in 2017 => 18 million units sold in 2018). That's the type of decline the PS4 would have seen even if the Switch didn't exist.
Anyways, arguing whether the Swutch will fall off a PS5 sized cliff while it shatters records is pointless as it won't happen. The numbers speak for themselves.
@TG16_IS_BAE,
If the console sells low numbers there is always less support for it, the main reason you see so many indie and much more third party support then on the Wii U, is down to the Switch's sales.
@westman98 Sure, and as I said, I don't think we can answer that definitively, but it seems reasonable to assume that Sony thought that the Pro launch in 2016 would have extended its lifecycle more than it actually did.
And, in a Switch context, I think it's an easy statement to make that this was not just the Switch's best year in terms of sales, it was its best POSSIBLE year, with Animal Crossing and lockdowns striking social media perfectly to boost Switch uptake in the first 3/4 of the year. I think it's a progressive down trend over the next 3 years, unless there really is a Switch Plus / Pro / X in the offing for next year.
@Razer,
Sales falling of s cliff simply will not happen, the Switch does not affect the sales of the PS4/5 and the Xbox One series x/Xbox One, and they will not impact sales of the Switch either.
The Switch exists in it's own space and has a wide appeal, even more importantly it has a lot of momentum which is very important also, the whole Switch pro debate is only relevant to hardcore fans who will own all consoles and a P.C, they see the Switch pro as a must for Nintendo going forward, when in reality it't only their own personal reasons they are interested in, the Switch could just have a minor screen/design update which also improved the battery life, which again does not matter to the wider audience as they were never concerned with these things in the first place.
The other red herring the core tend to chuck in is the amount of games for the system, and with this they are actually stating there is not enough games for them personally, or they do not like the games/Wii U ports etc, but step outside all of this rubbish and the Switch has great appeal to any potential purchasers with loads of great games, remember a lot of these people do not have a console already and did not own a Wii U, as not many people bought that console in the first place.
Once again opinions on here from people that are core hobby gamers, claiming to speak for everybody else.
The story of the switch is so funny, on reveal people stated it would not sell well, hardly surprising with the poor performance of the Wii U, the console is a massive success and keeps on selling without a major price cut, and to some no games, which is of course pure lunacy.
But of course the core can't believe it's appeal so continue to state every time another sales milestone is reached that it's sales will fall off a cliff, if not this year then the next, they claim the console is in the same market as the Ps4/Xbox One if it sells low numbers, but a handheld in a totally different space if it performs well.
They also claim it's continued great sales are down to the fact Sony and Microsoft's consoles are in their twilight years, and of course when their new machines appear it will spell doom for the Switch, even though these very same people have stated the Nintendo machine is a handheld and does not compete for the same market, and it was always unfair to compare it's awesome sales to the PS4 and Xbox One.
Yes double standards and Hypocrisy run rife with the core internet posting minorities.
@shazbot,
The poor performance of both the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X, should tell people something, even with the core market the only people worried about frame rates and console specs are the minorities too.
Don't believe me, look at the amount of subscribers from Digital foundry, 1 million or so, the majority are just not interested.
@Razer “Parents don’t think like we do...”
Hmmm, reductive much? Plenty of parents on this site. And I think, in the case of a 14- and 16-year-old, they themselves will definitely know whether they want a Switch or a PS5 or a Series X. This hypothetical mum isn’t just going to take a punt.
If all your mates have got a Switch, though, you may still rather get a Switch this Christmas, because there won’t be that many of the new consoles in the wild.
@johnvboy Yeah, I don't think it's critical to see a Pro, but I think we are at a juncture where we are seeing Switch development support split. We've seen current gen titles launched on Switch as streaming titles and, despite performance for me being great, I know that's not the same for everyone.
Because of Wii U's untimely death the Switch is midcycle with PS & XB & we've seen Nintendo do multiple refreshes for handheld SKUS, GB mini, GBC, GBASP, DSXL, 3DSXL, 2DS, New 3DS XL, so it's at least precedented (and New 3ds was virtually exclusively a performance boost).
I don't think sales will fall off a cliff or anything, but I think the circumstances of this year are unique. I think without COVID this was another 20 million year, and I don't think Animal Crossing would have hit 20 million + sales. By virtue of this being such a great sales year, and the unique circumstances of this year, I just can't imaging this not being peak Switch (sales).
@shazbot
If Switch was actually going to hurt PS4, PS4 sales would have declined in 2017 regardless of whether the PS4 Pro existed or not.
Switch sold 15 million units in 2017. That is not a small figure whatsoever - if it was siphoning away PS4 sales, it would have done so quite easily.
November is going to be really interesting regarding Switch sales.
@westman98 Not only you are trolling but you are a racist too. Bad. Very bad combination. And if that 98 in your username means that you are 22 years old now that is very worrying.
@shazbot,
We keep saying this though, and a lot of people forget the Switch stock issues which have been there since launch, also the more consoles in peoples homes will always drive sales too, momentum is the biggest factor to any console, the Wii U was an awesome machine but never got going, and the PS4 once it got it's lead was pretty much unstoppable against the Xbox One.
@Cosats,
Let's not bring racism into this as well, hell it's hard enough on these comment sections as it is.
I do hate to ask, but how is he racist?.
@Grumblevolcano,
They will be massive,as long as the stock levels remain in place, typically Nintendo's strongest part of the year, I know my boss at work who has no interest in video games has bought a Switch for his son for Christmas.
Good console sales means good 3rd party support. It may also mean Nintendo don't rush put first party games and release better quality products.
@westman98 Yeah, but my point isn't that we can know, it's that you can use the same data point (2017 peak ps4) and contextualize it differently to support a different narrative. That said, I think it's unknowable.
@johnvboy Yes, I understand Switch has outperformed initial expectations, but I'm not a 'hater.'
I'm saying there have been demonstrably unique circumstances this year, that produced clearly inflated sales. The next year will bear out whether I'm right or wrong, but unless pandemic/lockdowns continue indefinitely (which they won't), and they don't cause a recession (which they already have), I really cannot see the Switch replicating these sales next year.
I'm not saying it'll be 1 million units or something, but I think it will be lower. Feel free to necro this comment if Switch sells 26m+ next year.
@JasmineDragon,
It's selling well and breaking sales records, it's in demand and a cool piece of tech for all the wider audience, yet because it's not as powerful as a PS5, so it needs a price cut.
As sh***y as covid has been to us all and effecting jobs and our daily routines, the gaming industry has been the only benefitor and these sales show it, the demand for gaming from people in lockdown and for the kids who have to stay off from school has massively boosted the switch's sales and software.
This Christmas is going to be a record breaker, calling it now
@JasmineDragon Everyone knows it makes sense to give a system a price drop when it is flying off the shelves.
@roboshort,
It does make perfect sense if you are deranged.
@Linux7055 Yes, that was the joke.
@Cosats
Racism? What?!
He’s a regular, well-informed poster and you just called him a Troll and a Racist.
What?!
@TG16_IS_BAE
“ Does anybody actually care about Nintendo’s sales figures, outside of Nintendo employees?”
System sales are directly related to how much software support that System gets. This has been true for the entire existence of the Video Games Industry.
@Cosats I think you may have gotten the wrong end of the stick.
He was joking with his comment.
@johnvboy @westman98
here I'll put some numbers up for you guys.
In March 2017 the PS4 was on the market for 3 years and 3 months, it had amassed a sales total of 70 million consoles sold by end of 2017, on market for 3 years and 11 months.
The PS4 now has lifetime sales figures of 113 million units sold. In the 3 years and 8 months since the Switch launched, the PS4 has sold 39 million consoles since the Switch launched.
That's a 35% drop in sales, now you could try and say that the PS4 had reached it's peak (the same is true of the Switch, which will also cause the sales to drop).
But I would argue that the 35% drop in PS4 sales was down to the Switch. Which released midway through the PS4's lifespan... The same way the PS5 is releasing midway through the Switch's.
If the Switch had an obvious effect on the PS4 sales numbers, you genuinely have to be naive to believe the PS5 won't effect the Switch's when the circumstances are EXACTLY the same.
Honestly... Just think about it.
@westman98 so either the PS4 sales dropped because it reached it's peak in 2017 (Which is about where the Switch is) or the Switch effected its sales.
Because 70 million by end of 2017 in 3 years and 11 months... Then 39 million in 3 year's and 8 months is a drop no matter how you look at it.
Whatever you attribute that drop in sales, it'll happen to the Switch too.
I'm STILL kicking myself for not buying nintendo shares during the darkest days of the Wiiu
@TG16_IS_BAE
Agree completely although it's great Nintendo isn't flat-lining like in the Wii U era.
The Switch's momentum will just keep growing and growing. Not even the PS5 and X Box Series will stop this.
@Ronwantread I'd love to see it! That's a tall order. However, they have been quiet. But if they put together a string that included the new Metroid, Zelda, added Mario Kart 9, and some big names from the past like Excite Truck, a new Mario Galaxy, Pikmin 4, and another title, they could do it. They just need to make an announcement!
@Edu23XWiiU you know it. In fact I never not cared about what the competition was doing until now. They put together a string of surprises like Mario Kart 9, a Mario Galaxy, throw in Excite Truck, along side Pikmin 4, Metroid, and Zelda...forget it.
@electrolite77 And we are in a position where software support is declining.
@Joe-b Hahahaha the day they put out Metroid Prime 4, no one will buy it, as usual...
@Razer,
Different markets fella, I will put a number up for you it's a 180 million units, this is roughly the hardcore market each and every generation, both Microsoft and Sony fight for a share of it.
This time Sony have around 130 million share while Microsoft have around 50 million, the sales have slowed down because it's reached saturation point.
Let's just see were the Switch ends up, then we can judge, the Switch has no potential ceiling in sales, that's not to suggest it will reach insane heights, but at this point I think Wii numbers will be very easy to reach, beyond that who knows?.
@Razer,
"@westman98 Not only you are trolling but you are a racist too. Bad. Very bad combination. And if that 98 in your username means that you are 22 years old now that is very worrying."
If that comment was a joke posted by "Cosats", it's not a very good one, and without any indication it is in fact a joke.
@TG16_IS_BAE
The Switch has sold really well. It has a huge selection of software. It is getting loads more. Wii U didn’t sell well, it didn’t have a huge selection of software. Megadrive sold well, had a huge selection of software. 32X didn’t sell well, got very little software.
That’s how it works. That’s why sales are important. You don’t have to care, but it’s easy to explain why many people do.
@Razer
PS4 sold-through 53.4 million units from its November 2013 launch to the end of 2016 (3 years 2 months).
PS4 then sold-through another 52.6 million units from the beginning of 2017 to the end of 2019 (3 years). The Switch launched during this period and sold-through over 48 million units during this same time frame.
In other words, PS4 sold roughly the same amount of units in its first 3 years than it did in the following 3 years, despite the Switch launching to great success during those following 3 years.
So Switch had literally no impact on PS4 sales whatsoever.
@electrolite77 All you have to do is look in stores and get the news. You don't have to watch weekly sales charts to figure it out.
@Edu23XWiiU it's not my kind of game but there's alot of people waiting for it.
@TG16_IS_BAE
Not really. Sales are a good indicator of future sales. Lots of companies signed up to make 32X games for example but then when sales dropped they pulled out.
You may not have been into Games for long but this is pretty well known. As I say, you don’t have to be interested but others are.
@electrolite77 Sales are not a good indicator of future sales. With your logic, the Switch would have innumerable 3rd and 1st party releases...where are they? The past 6 months have been a ghost-town on the Switch. Nintendo is resting on their laurels, until the commotion of the PS5 and new Xbox die down, because they know nobody will pay attention while everyone is fiending for the new stuff.
You misunderstand me, you have to be in gaming for a very long time to develop this level of cynicism towards corporations! LOL Hint: the TG16 was released 1989, and my icon is from Earthbound, released in 1995. I'm not old, but I'm old, heh.
First congrats to.Nintendo. This has been a terrible year for all and even with stock disruptions and a messed up software release schedule the beat rolls on and they keep selling like hot cakes.
Ok so after working thru the long line of messages here I thought I would weigh in. First WTF people.....I am not sure anyone mentioned games or software as even POI regarding Switch 2021 sales in the face of the new x86 twins. Right out of the gate the new twins have almost nothing to play exclusive. Everyone will be playing all this years big releases on their pc/xb1x/ps4pro x86 boxes....Indeed you tell me how long until something you really must have will be out on the new twins? 2021,2022? I never even thought my ps4 was worth it until 3/15 when Witcher3 came out so other than being able to run ps4/xb1 games with performance boost whats really in it for none ‘core’ gamers? Meanwhile 2021 could be unreal year for software on Switch. More and more units piling up means more 3rd party. But even what we expect is on tap from N its going ti be the best yet. BOTW2 surely started before BOTW even launched and is using the same engine and assets, surely its coming during the anniversary year likely preceded by legacy ports/updates of other Zeldas. Bayo3, Prime4, long rumored MP trilogy remaster. Who knows what will happen but what we do know is N did not release games they were planning to this year so the cupboard is stocked. While the twins fight to keep stock demands and incur losses on hardware sales no must have exclusives N will be keeping great momentum with major software releases throughout the year.
I’m old in gamer years having seen it all since the arcades and 2600 so I know a little about the industry. N said on Switch launch we do not see ourselves as direct competitors. The robust sales of both PS4 and Switch since 17 would seem to indicate that and if M$ saw N as competitors no way they would be their properties on Switch. Indeed the Switch’s wild success is do to its unique form factor. I have owned just about all systems both portable and home (still do) since that 2600 in 1981. I habe always played both formats and for me the Switch is the dream hybrid I always wanted. It allows users the most accessibility to their games and the easiest way to share playing them with others. To many a home only console is ‘old fashioned’ as so many have much more mobile lifestyles now and just can’t put the kind of time in sitting at the TV gaming. No one else is in this space competing with Nintendo. No other gaming portable, no other gaming handheld (lite) and no other hybrid. No one is even gonna bother trying. So my assessment is incredible holiday sales coming up and 2021 will not slow down. I am well ready for Super Switch Pro 2.0 and if it comes next year I will absolutely buy that before I get PS5.
@Razer A Pro Switch is an inevitability. March 2021 with a January unveiling. The PRO might not even be a new console and might be an upgraded dock with 4K TV output. It will be interesting to see how this plays out but Nintendo Switch will be around for many years to come. We are only coming up to its fourth year and any revision will be backwards compatible so you are looking at another 8 years of Switch at least.
@TG16_IS_BAE
It's funny that you like that comment, because that is the exact type of comment you would make lol
@jarvismp
In no universe will the Switch Pro just be some upgraded 4K dock. It will be an actual Switch revision.
The idea of an "external GPU" is a fantasy that would never work.
@Joe-b The same was said about the other Metroid games, and they all have mediocre sales. Metroid Prime for GameCube is still the best selling game of the entire franchise. And, to be quite honest, is the best one. Prime 2 and 3 are not as good, and are much more tedious.
It's funny when you see people come into a sales thread and post multiple messages but still claim "they don't care about sales"
@TG16_IS_BAE
The Switch does have tons of third party games though. Literally thousands. A quick look at the release schedule shows Bakugan, Tropico 6 and Descenders just out. Fenyx, Empire of Sin, Space Invaders Forever, Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, MK11 Ultimate, Sniper Elite 4, a Fortnite bundle, Kingdom Hearts Melody of Memory, a Need for Speed remaster, Sakuna and about 20 other games according to Amazon U.K. in the next three weeks. Not the same as what’s coming out on PS4 but it was never going to be.
High system sales = software support. As always. As I say, if you’re not interested fine, but it’s not difficult to see why others are.
@electrolite77 The topic has nothing to do with how interested I am! Separate issues altogether. The recent games have been busts, look at their sales. People are holding out for major first party titles which are all TBA, production at Nintendo has slowed to a crawl from global issues, understandably. Having lots of things, doesn’t matter. You and I both know that only quality games are on the table. Hardly anyone will be buying Chinese Game Clone #3,339, and that seems to be the majority of titles. Nintendo pulled a fast one. Meaning, they created a ton of hype, for everyone on the system as fast as possible, and now....well, now we are all waiting for things, aren’t we?
@TG16_IS_BAE,
You could look at things another way though, the Switch has been out for three years and already has installments to all their major franchises, so I am not quite sure what you think we are waiting for, surely not Metroid Prime 4, this has never sold great numbers, and is unlikely to push Switch console sales.
There are over a 1000 games for the system, of course in some peoples eyes they are not the right games, but you have to look at this from the point of view of the potential Switch customers, not a core minority of internet comment section posters, as for the potential customer will see a cool piece of tech with tonnes of content/software available for it.
@TG16_IS_BAE
"@electrolite77 And we are in a position where software support is declining."
So you are taking a year with a global pandemic that has hit all software development and a lot of other things hard, then suggesting Switch software is in decline, hardly a fair and balanced take on the current situation, as you fail to take all external factors into consideration.

“ The topic has nothing to do with how interested I am!”
Your first post on this page was
“ Does anybody actually care about Nintendo’s sales figures, outside of Nintendo employees?”
I then explained why a lot of people are interested. You are now trying to claim that System sales don’t equate to Software support, which is like claiming the Earth is flat. That means ignoring reality (478 Switch games with a Metascore of 76+, stuff like Rune/Bravely Default 2/Monster Hunter Rise/Disgaea already announced for the future) in favour of ‘but it doesn’t have enough that I like” which is basically irrelevant. Don’t mean that last bit in a rude way, but it’s very common on here for people to make that kind of totally subjective argument.

This is hitting the nail on the head. There’s always a Disconnect between the demands of people on sites like this and Consumers in the real world
@electrolite77 ,
Which is why the minorities did not think the Switch would be popular in the first place, they look at it solely from their own point of view, and personal reasons for buying a console, what's even more strange is Nintendo have gone in this new direction since the Wii.
salesfigures matter. i don't understand some post from dumb people here.
good sales figures are a sign to keep these thirth party developers pushing their games on the nintendo switch.
Not only will the Switch be the best-selling platform this holiday season, I think it will be the best-selling platform in 2021 as well
Switch is on track to ship 27-30 million units in FY2020. I think Switch shipments will decline to 23-24 million units in FY2021, though it could sell more if the software lineup and Switch Pro sales are stronger than expected.
The PS4 shipped 14.5 million units in FY2014; 1st year PS5 sales would need to increase by 50%+ over 1st year PS4 sales to exceed Switch sales in 2021. PS5 will still sell amazing, but reaching Switch numbers will be a very tall order.
@TG16_IS_BAE lol the irony of you of all people telling other people here to calm down is extremely entertaining, so I thank you.
