ININ Games and developer Taito have revealed that Bubble Bobble 4 Friends: The Baron Is Back, an updated version of Bubble Bobble 4 Friends, will launch on Nintendo Switch on 17th November.
The game will arrive both physically and digitally on that date across North America, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, with the Japanese release following shortly afterwards. If you own the original game, you'll also be able to download all of the new content from The Baron Is Back in a free update.
Here's an official overview and feature list (thanks, Gematsu):
Bubble Bobble 4 Friends on Nintendo Switch received praise and acclaim from the critics and fans although many requested more content. Taito and ININ Games listened, hence its return and PlayStation 4 debut along with a favorite character to spice up this platform feast. Conveying even more exciting challenges and more “Bubble Bursting” addictive mayhem, it looks and plays like a dream.
Beware though the infamous Baron marks his appearance within 100 unique new stages: twice as many stages as before to offer unprecedented confrontations!!! Nintendo Switch will not miss out either for, if you purchased the original title, the extra content can be downloadable free on release and new purchasers of course will get this bumper game in full!
In Game Elements
- Four-player cooperative mode.
- Total of 200 levels.
- Original arcade version included.
- Online ranking feature.
- Return of a fan-favorite villain: Baron von Blubba.
That's a lot of new free content coming your way if you own the original game, and perhaps a great place to jump in if you haven't tried it yet.

As a free content update that doubles the original content, that's great.
It's just annoying that if you want a physical copy to preserve that, you gotta buy it again.
"Bubble Bobble received praise and acclaim from critics" is not a sentence I expected to read today.
Hm, well, that makes this a proper size entry huh
@TheFrenchiestFry
Nintendo Life gave Bubble Bobble 4 Friend's initial release an 8/10 despite the lacking content.
Bobble is back I just like how the name sounds like bob
@RupeeClock I wasn't even that generous to Street Fighter V at launch lmao
@RupeeClock Do you, or does anyone know if this edition has all the content from the Bubble Bobble 4 Friends Special Edition?
I've got some serious childhood nostalgia attached to those games. But still not quite enough to buy this at full price. Definitely on sale, though.
I’ve been waiting for this to go on sale. Loved Bubble Bobble as a kid, but I feel like $40 is a bit steeper than I’m willing to go for for this today.
That guy should voice all the game ads.
This might actually get me to play again. Getting the EXTEND's on first run kinda burned me out.
I am usually one the does not complain about prices. That €40 price though, even with the new added levels, seems ... a bit off.
This makes the 40 worth it-- Bubble Bobble is one of my favorite arcade games
I don’t normally complain about price, and I don’t normally care about online gaming, but the only way I’d consider paying $40 for this is if I could play online with my buddy I played the original Bubble Bobble with as a kid. I don’t doubt that it’s worth it, I’m sure it’s a great game...it’s just not what I personally need it to be. Nice update, though!
I'm fond of the series, but I can't bring myself to spend another $40 for 100 stages when I've barely touched the previous game.
@NinChocolate Right? He is great!
May purchase this now on the Switch as a DL with the free content. It was previously on my wishlist pending a discount. Love a bit of Bub and Bob
Seems like a lot of people have been waiting for a price drop... as have I. I hope this at least comes with a release discount like some games have.
Had this a while, just to play arcade original on Switch. I'm not a fan of the new version though so only played that option a couple of times. As I only like the old arcade option, my advice would be to wait for discount.
@Alundra-1998
The special edition is nothing more than a couple of trinkets in a box.
"The Baron is Back" edition can simply be considered a reprint that is content complete.
Yeah this has been on my wishlist for a while. Waiting for a price drop. It needs to be around the £20 mark.
Does Taito even know what the Urban Dictionary definition of Bonner is?
Been waiting for this to get a sale, looks like it's not going to happen anytime soon...
Well, if it's more content of the same game, then will get it. Just right now I'm put off a bit by the price 🤔
I will absolutely grab this physical. I'm glad I didn't get the one from SLG now.
I’m getting one.
(Was on the fence before, so this really worked if they were trying to incentivize new buyers like me.)
@Juga Is the new music crap or something? Or is it good, but you’d like the 8-bit music option as well?
@Gridatttack Yeah, that’s mainly why I didn’t get it... I guess I just said I’m buying it in a previous comment, but I probably still need to weigh this out...
@Juga Ah, gotcha... yeah the Burgertime Party demo was kinda fun, but it was hard to look past the cheap graphical style. Don’t remember the music too well, but I’m sure you’re right.
@ShinyUmbreon Bub and Bob are actually short for Bubblun and Bobblun.
@Magician It's a free update for existing owners.
@Bermanator
Yeah, I should've specified, I'm a collector of Switch physical releases. Some of us maniacs fight the temptation to double-dip or triple-dip if there's even the slightest difference in cover art.
The update is online.
