The Game Boy - where would handheld gaming be without it? With this in mind, this week Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is paying its respect to this past Nintendo generation with a special Spirit Board event.
This event will start on 25th September (this Friday) and will run for a total of three days. During this time you'll encounter spirits from the Game Boy and Game Boy Color generation. If you're able to defeat them, you'll be rewarded with extra gold.
As can be seen in the artwork above, there are characters from the Shantae series, Pokémon from both the Red and Blue, and Gold and Silver generations, characters from The Legend of Zelda series, and even Muddy Mole from Mole Mania. Will you be participating in this upcoming event? Tell us in the comments below.

Actually really want Game Boy games added to the Online service tbh, some great games in there like Donkey Kong and Wario Land.
This is a Game (Boy) overdose.
@nessisonett I second this, the Game Boy had a great library! Game Boy games > NES games.
That preview pic made me think we finally get the GB NSO announcement!
But it's just ... Smash ...
@Tourtus Yeah I am hoping for it since I got my Switch.
Imagine the hours you could sink into QIX, TETRIS, SHANGHAI ... all fast booted up and with that amazing charm GB graphics had.
And a dream release would be BATTLE CITY as a EU/US premiere.
Glad to see Muddy Mole in the promo art!
@Yanina Yeah sometimes I see these pictures on the articles and I too think they're something grander for a brief moment...
I am also hoping for a Game Boy catalogue for N.S.O. The Game Boy is a portable system so the games running on Switch would be a natural fit. Hopefully they'd add frames that look like a Game Boy like how the 3DS did if you started a game up while holding START.
@Tourtus I never had a 3DS. I tried to google the startup you mentioned but only saw error messages that people had. What exactly was it that you mentioned?
God, this subject really got my brain spinning right now. Imagine REVENGE OF THE GATOR!!!!
Oh my god. I am almost fainting.
Could be so easy to make me happy ...
@Yanina Here's Pokemon Yellow with the GBC frame: https://venturebeat.com/2016/02/28/how-to-get-pokemon-red-blues-pea-soup-coloring-and-a-game-boy-border-on-your-3ds/
@Yanina The 3DS had a higher resolution and a bigger screen than the Game Boy so when you played Game Boys games on it they would get stretched out. Holding START would make the 3DS load the game up in it's native resolution, when this is done a lot of the 3DS's screen is unused. Instead of having the unused portions of the screen be black the 3DS will put a frame around the game's display and the frame will look like a Game Boy or a Game Boy Color. (Which frame you get depends on the game you play)
They look like this: https://giantbomb1.cbsistatic.com/uploads/original/1/17988/1809300-img_0130.jpg

Games run without the frame are stretched out and look like this: https://images.nintendolife.com/news/2014/02/super_mario_bros_deluxe_looks_set_for_27th_february_release_on_european_3ds_virtual_console/attachment/0/900x.jpg
It's a neat little Easter egg but using the frames really shrunk the games down so it's harder to see them in my opinion. They did make the pixels less blurry though.
I really wish for Shantae to be a playable character in Smash; she’s got a great following, great moves and her cute design would be a great match for the game I think.
Great?
Great!
-EDIT-
I would also love to have GBA, GB and GBC games hit the Switch e-shop as well.
They would be a perfect fit for the system.
@Tourtus Oh wow thanks for showing me this! That is super cool!
I was always expecting it would be like the Secret of Mana Collection (basically what you said).
But judging from the rather minimalistic NSO console approaches, we might be stuck with black. (+ weirdo dot borders)
Does that mean Shantae won't be a character after all?
Nice! Will try and participate this time. Like others here I'd also love GameBoy games on NSO. Honestly they make more sense than N64/Gamecube as I suspect Nintendo would want to increase the monthly/yearly fee if those were included
@Tourtus @yanina They also used the system’s 3D to add depth to the border so it appeared as if the game image was behind an actual GB/GBC screen - surprisingly realistic. And an option to switch between clear monochrome and traditional GB green (with added blur). Great options, but I also tend to leave it all off.
The border also worked on the small selection of Game Gear titles on the 3DS.
@nessisonett
Yep, would be nice to have some of them also on the Switch.
Changed nearly all the Batteries of my Games this Weekend^^
@Azuris If you replace the batteries do you lose your save files? Or is there a way to keep them?
@gaga64 I knew about the color options but didn't know the 3D worked with the frames. I always had it off since I thought Virtual Console games didn't support 3D, thanks for the info!
@Yanina There's still a chance for the special frames. I just think since the NES and SNES games were always played on a TV they couldn't come up with something special.
@Tourtus give it a try, it’s kinda cool. But yeah, I guess unless you’re using an XL the “True resolution” just makes it all feel small and squished, so I never really use the borders either.
the spirits can DIE. im already tired of tediously unlocking all the characters. im at 60 so far, and it took like all day. a major pain in the a**. if there gonna have that many characters or more in a game, they need to hide or include a unlock all cheat. Ridiculous. i could give a rats patoots about spirits. characters to play as however, bringem.
@Tourtus
Yes you will lose them.
I've used the Retrode2 to make a Backup and to play around with the save Files.
You can go on playing on a Emulator on your PC or Mobile Device and than put the save Files back to the original Cartridge, great for Pokemon to play Stadium
Also to use Action Replay / Game Genie Cheats on an Emulator to get Mew easily.
Maximum Freedom for your Way to play
@gaga64 Naw I have a standard size New 3DS (the one with the removable face plates) which is rare in the U.S. because they had a limited release here, usually a special bundle. I went with this model because it still had the 3D feature and a greater pixel density than the XL models. (the gaps between pixels were less noticeable) But yeah I plan on giving the 3D a try with the next Virtual Console game I play.
@Azuris I'll look into this, thanks!
Wayforward really needs to remake the original Shantae. No one really knows about it and the Game Boy is ancient history (I'm not particularly interesting in playing it on the GB). And since the series is popular now, the game could really see new life if it was remade.
@Bolt_Strike
It's not a remake, but the GB version's going to be released on Switch, Limited Run are even already selling a physical for it.
@Moroboshi876 Min Min was included in a spirit event before she was a playable character (Cruisin' for a Bruisin'). It's just a spirit event.
