Nintendo has revealed that Animal Crossing: New Horizons' fall update arrives next week on 30th September.
Available for free, the update is set to add some spooky touches to the season, with Halloween costumes, character customisation options, DIY projects and festivities. We have a full rundown for you below:
- Growing Pumpkins – Deck out your home and island for all your awesome autumnal occasions by first purchasing pumpkin starts in-game from Leif year-round or from Nook’s Cranny during October. Once your pumpkins are grown, they can be harvested and put to use in pumpkin-based DIY projects.
- Prepare for Halloween – Pumpkins are just the beginning of the Halloween-themed festivities coming to your island. With the big day just around the corner, you can start stocking up on candy early. Find your style for Halloween night by purchasing costumes, like a mage’s dress, at the Able Sisters shop during the month of October. You can even procure body paint and colored eye contacts by exchanging Nook Miles. You'll also be able to learn Halloween DIY projects from your fellow residents. On Halloween night, your neighbors will be getting in the holiday spirit with costumes of their own.
- Halloween Night Celebrations – When Halloween night arrives on Oct. 31, after 5 p.m., neighbors will gather in the plaza, which will be adorned with an array of Halloween decorations. You’ll also receive a visit from a mysterious guest, Jack, the “czar of Halloween.” By giving Jack lollipops and candy, you’ll earn spooky in-game rewards. Be sure to save some candy for your neighbors, too, or you might get pranked! Luckily, you can learn a couple of new Reactions to properly express your feelings of fear.
- Revisiting Dreams – The ability to take a nap and visit other islands within dreams was introduced this summer. Now, you'll be able to easily revisit dreams from a list, making it even easier to visit some of your favorite islands.***
- NookLink App Update – The NookLink Service in the Nintendo Switch Online smartphone app is also receiving an update in early October. With the update, you’ll be able to use your smart device to perform Reactions in the game.**** How about trying it out for this occasion to let your island visitors know exactly how you feel about their mischievous tricks and treats?
Nintendo has also confirmed that yet another update will be arriving in late November. More info on that one is planned to be shared "in the coming months".
And that's not all, either, as it's also been revealed that Animal Crossing Switch consoles and amiibo cards are being restocked.

I had just tweeted about Nintendo needing to fix the absurd amount and frequency of repeating DIY recipes when they just posted this. So this was a welcome treat to see and can't wait to decorate the island for Halloween 🎃
That actually looks a lot of fun, much better than the bunny day nonsense thats for sure. Right I guess I'll have to get back to sorting out my island
Who wants to summon the Great Pumpkin?
Hopefully not too spooky!! ;_;
This looks like it can be a lot of fun! I love that these updates are free.
Not the biggest fan of Halloween but it's always nice to see them add stuff. I didn't think they would even bother with Halloween as I thought it was too USA focused. (Someone did inform me recently that the past AC games did Halloween so now I know.)
Looks like Thanksgiving and Christmas will be represented as well. Should be a good few months. I wonder if it's possible I play every dingle day for a year, haven't missed 1 yet. hmmm
I've never actually made a garden before, just a few fruit tree orchards and flowers everywhere, but I think I'll fence off some land for the pumpkins.
FYI - the last bug-off is tomorrow, and I believe the 3rd fishing tournament is coming up soon, probably Saturday Oct 10th, so only 2 more weeks.
Maybe I will play every day for a year.
Finally a substantial halloween in animal crossing!! So stoked for all of this
Nice update, my daughter will go crazy for the skin paint and eye colors. Also, that November one is going to be huge.
Looks good! Autumn/Halloween themes are always great
@rjejr Halloween is a bigger deal in Japan than America these days. Seriously, look up the pictures and articles that have been written about it over the past few years.
I'm not a fan of spooky stuffs despite my birthday is one day before Halloween.
I have very fine line between acceptable spooky things and condemned horror stuffs.
The cute spooky stuffs as long not attacking me, i still allow.
But when it already crossing the line, i will condemn them to death because it was attacking me.
Spooky things could be my most hatred things in the universe when crossing the fine line.
Friggin love Halloween and all things spooky. I have been waiting for this update since the game launched!
@Chowdaire Yeah, I was actually surprised at how big it was when I spent Halloween in Kyoto in 2017 - so many people were dressed up, and there were decorations everywhere. I had friends in Osaka and Tokyo at the time too, and it seemed like an even bigger deal in those areas. Without knowing that Thanksgiving had been in every previous Animal Crossing game (bar Wild World), I would actually say Thanksgiving would be the one that would have lowest chance of being added, as that is an almost exclusively American holiday.
Looks great! No haunted house to go through, seems like a missed opportunity.
For christmas, they could easily make their own version of google's north pole mini games. I would get ACNH just for that.
I adore pumpkins, so I'm excited for this. I'm also glad to see that it adds the new feature of gardening that we've seen in data mines for months.
Halloween itself is not my thing. I look forward to the Christmas update, as I love decorating for Christmas. The game already has plenty of neat items for the holiday in the base game. I can't wait to see what is added in that update. I hope for a lot of decor with lights, because I can't get enough of lights. Lol.
I m most excited for the pumpkin planting
Aww, yess, I am the Pumpkin King! Probably won’t be a thing, but I’d love the ability to do custom Jack oh lanterns, as every year I go absolutely pumpkin carving crazy in real life.
@Anti-Matter Hopefully AC still sits in the cute spooky category for you bud! The real scary stuff is when Tom Nook appears and asks you to repay your mortgage 😱
Cool looking update. I can't wait!
Pretty cool update. I still play this game regularly.
I hope my island doesn't become a cult again and talk about nothing but Halloween like they did before bunny day.
They had me at "Free". I haven't played in a while so this might bring me back.
as long as there's no spider decorations I'm good.
Looks like a cool update. Guess I gotta make my pumpkin patch in 5 days or so!
Cute! Finally an update! I like the farming but still a little disappointed there aren't more veggies and uses for them. Also still no gyroids. STILL this is very welcome update and looks very cute and fun. I get to see my villagers dress up and the Holloween furniture looks cool. Alright!!
This is nice. I prefer more brutal and gory stuff but that is nice as well
@Kirby_Girl I can see more vegetables, etc. being added in the next update. Would coincide nicely with AC's Harvest Festival
Back on a Halloween night in the late '90s I was one of several hundred foreigners in Japan who costumed up and rode the JR loop all the way around Osaka, stopping and getting out at each station to wait for the next train. I think the whole trip took like 90mins. There were a lot of station attendants and Japanese commuters wondering what the hell we were doing! Some participants were rather intoxicated and I'm sure we annoyed some people just looking to get home, but overall it was a good time and we sure did give Halloween some exposure in Japan!
So yes, I'm proud to be indirectly responsible for Halloween in Animal Crossing.
I still visit my island almost daily, and my daughters and I are looking forward to this ACNH update!
Honestly a tad disappointed. Truth be told, a lot of this stuff is already in the game (such as the Halloween mascot, Turkey and reindeer). Pumpkin gardening is okay, but it pales in comparison to the rumored vegetable gardens that folks were hoping for.
Maybe it's just that the June update with wedding season and the addition of bushes raised expectations, along with the addition of Luna and especially swimming in a later update, but both August and September/October's offerings kind of feel underwhelming by comparison, almost as if Nintendo is trying to pass off some stuff that was there all along as another update.
Thematically there was so much more I think Nintendo could have done here instead of pumpkin recipes and a few clothing additions. A lot of players would have loved to be able to furnish and tour their own haunted house, for instance. It just feels like a missed opportunity.
Maybe ACNH players will get a special Christmas present in the next round, though. Something major and game-altering again such as Brewster or Nookington's. That would definitely help to ease the disappointment of the past couple of updates.
did nintendo just forget about brewster and the gyroids or
@Chowdaire Really? That makes no sense to me. People in Japan cosplay 365 days a year, how would they know which day was Halloween? 😂
I can't see them taking their kids door to door begging for candy either, seems beneath them, they are a proud people when it comes to appearances.
Now you have me intrigued and I'm going to google all about it. Thanks.
There's a lot of cool stuff here. I'm not a big halloween fan, but I'm a sucker for seasonal stuff. But I do find myself disappointed that there's still no word of any new actual buildings for the island. I was hoping more stores or Brewsters or something would come to liven it up. These things are fun, and I'll do some of it, but it's mostly just a new plant, more clothing, and a special event day. It's still an empty island with 10 houses, 2 stores, and a town hall to do the same things in. Now with pumpkins. It'll keep me interested, but it's not really adding much.
@Zuljaras You could always use the designer thing to draw pools of blood and/or gore, then place the patterns on the ground.
That's what I'm gonna do
@rjejr "I can't see them taking their kids door to door begging for candy either, seems beneath them, they are a proud people when it comes to appearances."
....stares awkwardly at underwear vending machine
I hope they let us keep the eye and skin colors after the event, I need yellow eyes.
We love Halloween in our house, and this looks like another cool way to celebrate the event.
@rjejr,
I think calling Trick or treating begging is a tad unfair, it's a good little tradition the smaller kids like and have great fun doing.
Cool update. Looks like growing pumpkins all but confirms the data mined gardening feature.
@Kirby_Girl Nintendo will problaby add the rest of the Vegetable that Ninji have found on the game data,in the next update for the game in late novembre, 20th of novembre or novembre 25th here a lot of itens you can cook now incluing all the Vegetables.
yay now i can be a demon or vampire, i hope and expect Nintendo add the rumored and highly anticipated Cooking mechanics with the depth of the Crafting mechanics/DIY system in the next update for the game in late novembre, and Brewster too.
I like that they keep teasing next updates at the end of each trailer.
Though I really do hope for some major update that adds more interactions with items or villagers. Maybe at the one year anniversary...
After not playing for months I just started up again this week. Can’t wait! Definitely gonna buy more Amiibo cards too.
@Fandabidozi,
I have been messing with my Island for ages now, but this new update will make things more interesting
Dream address DA-0957-2799-1843
@johnvboy
I’ll look you up tomorrow when I’m much more sober 🤪👍
@Fandabidozi,
Don't do that, it's far more fun gaming whilst drunk.
@johnvboy "calling Trick or treating begging is a tad unfair"
As my teenage son likes to say - it's not wrong though.
When intelligent alien life visits our planet, and we start explaining our habits and customs to them, and we get around to beggars in the streets of NY, and then explain people going door to door asking for food on Halloween, well the aliens are likely to say " Oh, it's begging for candy."
Maybe the way you view "beggars" is a tad unfair?
@HobbitGamer Hey, we all need underwear. Emphasis on "under". 😉
@rjejr,
It's not begging, the people doing it have no need to beg for candy, it's a tradition and is only done on one night of the year, homeless people are in the same position every day begging for food or money to survive, totally different things.
@johnvboy You are focusing on the people, not the act.
What do you call people asking others for something without offering anything in return?
Port begging.
Begging your boss for a raise.
A dog begging for a bone.
None of those involve homeless people.
But don't take my word for it, check a dictionary.
verb (used without object), begged, beg·ging.
to ask alms or charity; live by asking alms.
to ask humbly or earnestly:
begging for help; begging to differ.
(of a dog) to sit up, as trained, in a posture of entreaty.
Trick-or-treating I'd say falls under the 2nd definition:
to ask humbly or earnestly.
But if it makes you feel any better, trick-or-treating isn't really begging, that was just me being nice, it's really extortion.
extortion
the practice of obtaining something, especially money, through force or threats.
"he used bribery and extortion to build himself a huge, art-stuffed mansion"
Trick - or - Treat. The trick is the extortion part. As in "give us candy or we'll egg your house." But as I said, trying to be nice.
@rjejr,
You could ask your boss for a raise, which would be then agreed upon by negotiation, just because there is an instance where a person begged their employer for more money does not make it the norm.
Trick or treating begging still seems harsh, and I really do not have to make myself feel better about something my daughter or many other children like doing once a year, now it's extortion, this again seems to be your view based on a fwe instances where kids have used threats, but surely not all children do this.
Im starting to apreciate this haloween tradition more and more, its a cozy tradition with nice decorations.
Maybe a substitute in the near future for our killed sinterklaas tradition in the netherlands.
