Yesterday's Nintendo Direct Mini had a runtime of about eight minutes, but did you know the Japanese video went for more than 12 minutes? It filled in this extra time with a number of additional games, and one of them happened to be the beautiful-looking action, crafting and farming title, Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin.
Although it wasn't shown in the western broadcast, Nintendo of America's Twitter account has confirmed it will be released on 10th November this year. It will arrive in Europe on the 20th of November. No reason was provided as to why it was excluded from the local partner showcase.
As shown in the Japanese trailer (above), there'll be a special edition of this game released alongside a standard copy. This appears to be a different offering to the 'Divine Edition' featured on the XSEED Games website locally, which is now available for pre-order.
Here's a bit about this upcoming Switch release, along with some screenshots from the Nintendo website:
Developed by Edelweiss, the two-man team behind acclaimed indie darling Astebreed, Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin combines side-scrolling action with deep crafting and farming simulation. Players take on the role of Sakuna, a spoiled harvest goddess banished to a dangerous island with a group of outcast humans. As she explores the beautiful yet forbidding environments of the island, she will also find a home in a mountain village, proving herself worthy of her title by harvesting rice and bettering the lives of humanity.
Does this look like your kind of game? Did you prefer this over any of the western announcements? Tell us down below.

This is one of the newer games that I'm most interested in and they didn't even put it in the Western direct.
Looks amazing and I saw the trailer a few days ago....unfortunately this is one of those releases where I will have to wait and see how the Switch version compares to the PS4 version. I hope they're identical because this looks like a beautiful game to play on the go.
I really wish they would have just added it the Western one. Even left untranslated I was more interested that in the Wrestling one.
Jesus, this looks awesome. Better than anything in the USA direct, don’t get me wrong stoked for SMT, but still..... this looks like Rune Factory or Fantasy Life on steroids!
Japanese direct was much better as it showed a reel of games releasing meanwhile NOA only showed 5 games 2 of wich are 2021 releases.
This should have been in the West's direct.
Looks great, art direction is really nice. Hopefully it lives up to its potential.
This looks gorgeous!
It would be by far the best announcement in the direct.
Whoa, didn't see that coming at all! The game looks fantastic, I'm surprised we didn't get any kind of tease for it in the English Direct.
Oh this looks awesome!
Why wasnt this also in our direct!
oh no its 2d , such a shame
I need to see more but it’s intriguing.
Japan Direct: cute amazing looking indie Platformer
Everyone else's direct: wWe bATTLEGROunds
This game is 100% me
Didn't you know guys this game was coming to Switch? I mean, it was announced more than a year ago lol (although it's the first time nintendolife make some news about this...).
It looks good, honestly better than the last time I saw it. Let's see if it holds up to its potential.
PS: there was even a treehouse focused on this last year: https://youtu.be/FOpssp-NFVc
@meltendo Yeah, I'm not so sure they're using the Switch footage for that trailer, looks too good for 60fps on Switch. I'd be fine with it if the 3D portions are 30fps and the 2D parts 60fps.
While I'll get the Switch version for the awesome packaging, I'll ultimately just play it on PC because its going to look beautiful maxed out at 1440p/4k 60/120fps.
For me this and Swery’s The Good Life have been the great ‘announced but forgotten’ games I’ve been interested in. I was convinced of getting it day one when I saw it on the treehouse last year. I get why it wasn’t in the Direct, because the trailer hasn’t been translated, but it definitely stands head and shoulders above what they did show.
This looks gorgeous and I love the idea of a platformer/farming hybrid. Shame it wasn't in yesterday's Europe direct.
This looks beautiful.... maybe too beautiful. I dont have high hopes for 60fps on switch.
I agree, if this game were there in the Western Direct, the Direct would be saved. That was the one of the most meh things I ever watched. Meh.
Really pretty
Had I read this was in that direct mini I’d have bothered with watching it
How nice does this look!?
@Slowdive I was thinking that too! That game was so pretty
@the_beaver it’s because they want to make fuzz about how this game was not showcased on the Western Direct.
This one looks awesome! I’ll get it, for sure! I think Nintendo did this on purpose. More publicity for games like this, that otherwise wouldn’t got so much publicity on a normal Direct.
Damn. That's a Switch game? Might pick this one up. Why did it skip the Mini Direct? This could have sold the direct better imo.
@Slowdive Reminds me more of Odin Sphere
That actually looks amazing, combat looks great.
Totally under my radar, first time a hear that game.
It reminds me of ActRaiser with the 2D action mixed with a life sim. Looks great and should hopefully be way better than that ActRaiser spiritual successor published by Sega last year that was so disappointing. Sol Something?
I hope we get that game on switch in america eventually
