NIS America has confirmed a new release date for the upcoming RPG Maker MV. It'll launch on Switch on 8th September in North America, slightly later on 11th September in Europe, and a week later on the 18th in Oceania.
The game was originally planned to launch way back in February 2019 before being delayed, and while we've had quite the wait since then, it's good to see that a new date has been locked in. RPG Maker MV gives you an assortment of tools to create your very own RPG story, allowing you to share your adventures with others online.
If you need a quick recap, hopefully this feature list will come in handy:
Key Features:
- Your Next Adventure Begins Here - A high-fantasy tale of knights and dragons? A modern story of high school romance? A chronicle of gods and demons? If you can dream it, you can make it!
- Game Development Made Easy - Say goodbye to complicated coding! This software provides seamless navigation and development with straightforward world and character creation, overworld customisation, and more!
- Make, Upload, Play! - Enjoy games made by fellow creators with the RPG Maker MV Player, free for download and play, even without the RPG Maker MV editor!
- An Endless Fountain of Customisaton - With hundreds of graphical assets and an infinite number of possibilities to create your very own world and story, the sky's the limit!
Have you been keeping an eye out for this one? Did you ever play RPG Maker Fes on the 3DS? Let us know in the comments.

Honest question, do really good RPGs get made on these and shared?
Too bad the trailer of a [Insert Genre] Maker doesn't actually show the "Maker" part. Because the "play" part isn't really appealing to me.
I played a bit of it when it came out in Japan forever ago (as the Japanese version had English support). I wonder if they've made many improvements since then because it had some real problems from what I recall. Maybe why the Western release was so delayed?
Hope it lets you make your own sprites. That would be great.
Lol, when I see this, I 'd say it's rather : Kemco RPG maker !
I remember buying the last one’s special edition (released on 3DS) back during my mass collecting days but never opened it. I ended up selling it as Mario Maket taught me I’m not one for creation.
I like the idea of playing the games but tbh I’m not that great at creating , think animal crossing has taught me that recently . So I will keep an eye out for the games but won’t buy the game
I dabbled with the 3DS edition, but it was extremely limited, sprites couldn't be customised/made and I felt like it would have required too great an investment for a dying platform. Plus, as I'm getting older, I have less and less time to be doing stuff like this. I would have been all over it in my early teens though.
I even made a Pokémon Gold mod back in the day (though it was never finished), and it was extremely buggy and sloppy, not helped by the use of buggy and sloppy tools.
I've waited two years for this release. I'm not sure why it took so long since the Japanese release supports English, but better late than never I suppose. I'm working on the script for my game right now.
I hope they made some improvements over the steam version. How hard is it to have a function for cutscenes that are easy instead of a complex 3-4 page long trigger laden mess that doesn’t stop looping!
Sadly the only decent rpg maker i know is To The Moon
It's kinda too late now. Game is on sale for steam at 16 bucks.
@boatie
Yume Nikki and Undertale say hi.
So usually people are making games to sell? I was thinking of playing like fan made or passion projects in a small way would be cool
RPG Maker... 1005?
I'm kind of semi interested in this, but equally it's far better to code your own engine if you're able. Nothing beats the flexibility of being in control of everything. Also, nothing beats the amount of work that brings with it
@AlexSora89 I'm not sure about Yume Nikki, but Undertale was created with Game Maker. That's a fantastic tool and a great place for people to start, and probably continue, their game development journey.
Big RPG Maker fan, I've had this pre-ordered ever since it was announced and I've been half considering canceling the order because I honestly though it was going to be in endless limbo. Glad to see they came through with it, console RPG Makers lack some of the flexibility in their PC counterparts but I'll at least check it out and see if I can make a small few hour game out of it.
FINALLY. It’s been so long that I’ve now come up with so many ideas. I can’t wait!
I wonder if it was delayed to fix thre insane load times the Japanese release had. Between RPG Maker 2000 and Fes on 3DS I've probably sunk thousands upon thousands of hours into the series. I don't know if I can do another one. Lol
@boatie Sadly, no. 99.9% of the stuff people make on it is atrocious as you'd suspect.
Not to toot my own horn, but I set out to change that on the 3DS version and after 100+ hours of insanely deep work (been playing these games for 20 years and know the systems inside and out), came up with a solid 2-3 hour chunk of a solid, well-written, balanced game. A lot of folks emailed me with praise and asking for the rest but the 3DS version is too restricted so I dont plan on finishing it. Haha
@boatie @AlexSora89 @mcdreamer The original Corpse Party is probably the best known RPG Maker game, at least in the west. Not sure how it compares to Yume Nikki in Japan.
@boatie there are a few good ones on the PC version but unless they can be imported to this I doubt you will see anything of any true quality outside of using the in game assets for most people. I am not even sure if this version will allow for sprite creation through an in game editor or even to add custom code like the PC version without those two things most games will be the same but I would love someone to correct me on the sprite editor and custom code part as I'm not 100% sure and details on the Japanese version even though it's been out ages have been hard to find
I got the Japanese version several years ago. I completely forgot that it hasn't released in the west yet. There was an update that made the menus faster, way faster, so don't believe reviews that say otherwise.
@boatie In the PC version.
