Ever since Nintendo revealed wave one of its "Summer Update", some Animal Crossing: New Horizons players located in the Southern Hemisphere have been worried about not being able to swim because they're currently in the winter months.
The promotion for this update was entirely focused on summertime, so it's easy to understand why some were starting to wonder. The good news is - just like Animal Crossing: New Leaf on the 3DS - there are no restrictions on when you can swim and dive. It's all year round! Here's some photographic evidence:
So - there you have it, you can indeed swim and dive in the colder months of the year. We hope that clears up any confusion and concerns. To see the full patch notes for Version 3.0.0, check out our previous post.
Have you gone for a dip yet in Animal Crossing: New Horizons? Tell us down below.

Oh wow, I didn't realize committing suicide was something E rated. Because swimming in the ocean in the middle of winter is a good way to die.
Dark humor aside, seriously, don't try it.
Swimming in winter is kinda freezing... 😅
Edit: So for Gulliver update, he will wear some outfits that represent specific countries, pretty much same as ACNL.
@Heavyarms55 With the number of sharks in the water around the island during the Summer, I'm not sure that's any better.
If only this game was as realistic as Red Dead 2 because swimming in winter just screams shrivelled Villager balls.
@BenAV : One is far more likely to be killed by a jellyfish than by a shark. Shark attacks account for only a negligible number of deaths despite what a certain film franchise would have us believe.
@Silly_G In the real world, sure. Animal Crossing's waters have an abnormally high number of potentially deadly sharks swimming near the beaches though so it's probably not advisable to swim there.
@nessisonett Yikes
Nice to know, thanks NL. I thought for a moment that we had been left out
Couldn't you swim during winter in New Leaf? I didn't think this was news...
If Animal Crossing decided to become realistic for this one thing I would be surprised 😂
Theres probably heat in the wet suit
@Heavyarms55
I'm a winter bather.
I swim in the ocean during freezing weather.
I don't do it for as long as the AC villager though, let me tell you! ^^
However, I also don't go as long without food or bathroom breaks as the AC villager. :S
@Heavyarms55 Suicide? Bathing during winter a common thing where I live. And elsewhere.
@Pod I'd like to believe my villager does that when I am not playing. Just make sure you have a toilet anf kitchen somewhere.
@Siskan Well yeah, bathing. But you're gonna tell me people go swimming in the ocean in the middle of winter? For more than a meme and more than like, a minute? Yeah try and sell that bridge to someone else, cause I'm not buying.
@Heavyarms55 There are people who go swimming on a daily basis and even swimming competitions. It isn't dangerous if you know what you're doing.
@Siskan Right. Okay. There are people who do all kinds of really dangerous things for "fun". But sure, I'll take your word for it.
@Heavyarms55 There are actually many wetsuits that allow for people to dive comfortably in cold water. Mind you, it's more expensive than most swimwear, but it exists
@Kimyonaakuma Not everyone playing New Horizons has played New Leaf.
@Anti-Matter What so not just the pirate suit?
@Heavyarms55 have you never heard of group callEd the polar bears. They ocean swim Year round.
I was wondering, thanks!
The feature wasn't ever restricted in NL IIRC, so why would it be now?
@nessisonett
shrivelled Villager balls...great name for a band!
I do remember it being year round in New Leaf
Anyways, this is a good thing. Doesn't restrict players in a specific hemisphere, having to wait 3-5 months before they can collect the various sea creatures.
Wow... Nintendo has a lot of respect for Canadians!
@BenAV
Probably a suckerfish
I was wondering, thanks! Media coverage and even their ads have been sadly Northen-centric all around, so them calling it repeatedly a "summer update" made me worried I'd have to wait a lot to be a part of it. I have to add that going into te ocean with high boots and a knit cap is possible though, and looks super silly
i just updated my Animal Crossing New Horizons, donated some Sea Creatures to my Museum and got a DIY recipe for a Mermaid Vanity from Pascal, i live in Brazil, i was not worried if i can swin in my Island, since all Animal Crossing New Horizons major updates have been of global scale.
@Heavyarms55 well, I can say for sure that people go swiming in the winter months, at least where I live (Brazil). Temperature levels here and in most tropical countries are kinda the same most of the year, so it doesn't really matter if it is winter or summer.
@Hask I would hope you have designated an area somewhere then...
@RPGamer
Teeth Clackering edition
@Hask
The lack of a toilet makes the villager explode.
