Nintendo has revealed that it will be broadcasting a Treehouse Live event on Friday 10th July (that's today!) which will include gameplay footage of Paper Mario: The Origami King. You can watch it live right here.
The event will also give us the first reveal of "a title in a franchise new to developer WayForward," which is perhaps a more exciting prospect for many people than the Paper Mario footage. Before you get too excited, though, Nintendo has confirmed that the game is a third-party property, and not a Nintendo franchise.
Treehouse Live July 2020 kicks off at 10 am PT / 5 pm GMT.

I heard some rumblings that the WayForward game might be a new Castlevania.
Really wish we’d get a new direct. Honestly at this point I don’t care about new games being announced, just would be fun to watch and bright spot in a gloomy year.
This is close enough for now…
It's no Direct, but I'll gladly take it at this point.
Just realize folks, before you get all crazy about speculating the game, Nintendo clarified that it's based on a third-party property
Is this the rumoured 2D Metroid at last?
(I'm new to this matter of rumours. Let me see if I can cover all the bases: Half-Life 3 confirmed! New Mother game!? F-Zero NX!! Hurrah for Chibi-Robo!!!)
@Avol Yeah, they probably could've included the follow up tweet in the article.
What’s Way Forward? Do they develop first party Nintendo games?
@Don have you been living under a rock for the past decade or so?
Treeeeeehouse live! I was hoping they'd do it without E3, so glad to see it. I wouldn't mind them doing 3 one day streams a year instead of 1 three day one but that may be asking too much.
@Cevil A battle arena game staring characters from Shantae. 😉
@Don They've been developing titles pretty much exclusively for Nintendo consoles since the Gameboy Color. They've risen to prominence partially due to longevity, and partially due to supporting the Wii U with some of its best indies.
It literally says in the article and links to a follow up tweet that WayForward's game is based on a 3rd party property.
It's not Metroid.
Way Forward has a pretty horrible track record with IPs they’ve taken over... not sure we’d want the reveal to be Metroid or Castlevania or anything we have high hopes for....
Googled them and nothing of real note... Shantae?! Double Dragon Neon? I don’t know....
You would think its likely going to be a 2d sidescroller/metroidvania. Interesting to see what it is, would Yacht Club let Wayforward get a hold of Shovel Knight?
$10 it's Shantae
@PLATINUM7 Please stop interfering with my fantasy. Leave me alone!!
@TimboSlice
Any examples to back up your wrong assumption?
@Bl4ckb100d It said new to wayforward
@Nookingtons
Bore off then
Oh exciting! I wanted one last month for much more games, so I hope it's not the last one we'll see this year.
However...
I don't want to spoil things but, if WayForward's new game will be another case like Cadence of Hyrule, then I hope it goes down well because... I have the feeling it will be a huge surprise, but how good it will be recieved, will depend on what fans want.
Specifically, it's going to be about the graphical style that fits the game AND franchise better, whatever it will be...
Im assuming covid has paused all exciting games. No expectations for wayforward reveal.
Wayforward have an incredible track record so if it’s Castlevania then I’m absolutely hyped.
@Don for what i know Wayford is famous for creating the Shantae franchise, unless Wayford is developing the new 2D Metroid that continue the Metroid Fusion story.
@TimboSlice
ALIENS on DS and THE MUMMY DEMASTERED on Switch (as well as Pirates Curse) is proof enough for me they can do an engrossing MetroidVania. It's gotta be better than MIRROR OF FATE, right?
Dang, WayForward moving on to Shantae 6 already.
@kalosn imagine if we discorver tommorow that Wayford is developing a new 2D Metroid game that continue the Metroid Fusion story.
I’m so excited, but I’m definitely not gonna get my hopes up. Who knows what it may be? 😈
They really should've said it was a third-party IP from the outset, because here I was thinking it could be Wario Land, Metroid, even StarTropics (yeah, it's probably my own dumb fault)...could still be cool though.
Shantae in a love triangle with Ryu Hayabusa and Simon Belmont?
It honestly should be a sizeable reveal considering its standing next to PM.. but i won't hold my breath
@Morph Metriod Fusion sequel? i hope the rumor of a 2D Metroid game is true and it is sequel of Metroid Fusion, i will glee of excitement if Wayford new game is the sequel of Metroid Fusion.
@Dm9982 There are rumors of a direct happening on the 20th
What was the last game Way Forward worked on? I’m having trouble remembering that studio.
@Entrr_username It had better be another Nontendo Direct.
@TG16_IS_BAE Way Forward is mainly known for Shantae and other games with a similar art style (Mighty Switch Force, A Boy and His Blob, etc)
WayForward is KING!!! They do NOT disappoint!! This is going to kick serious butt!!! I can't freaking wait!! The last Shante was soooooooooooo f'ing great!!! Yeah man wooooooohoooooooooo!!!
Shantae for Smash!!!
@sketchturner OH YEAH. Thank you. Brain fart lol
@Giancarlothomaz
Thank you for the info.

looks like it's not a partnership game, like people are hoping it to be. as nintendo confirmed.
"Please note that WayForward’s new title featured in #NintendoTreehouseLive is based on a third-party property."
Direct sequel to Zelda II.
At least it’s something new, with my luck though it’s going to be pet grooming with DS graphics.
If Wayforward is working on a Nintendo license I'm going to lose my shnit.
Well, at least it's a time where I can shove this in during my work hours. I'm not expecting to be floored by anything, but it's something!
@Giancarlothomaz That's exactly what I am thinking will be shown based on some rumours that also predicted Paper Mario on Switch, but I still want it to be a surprise, so I will be thinking more about how it'll look.
The thing is, what graphical style would you prefer for a brand new Metroid game? A retro style, hand-drawn, or something more hyper realistic?
message #17
@TimboSlice
"Way Forward has a pretty horrible track record with IPs they’ve taken over..."
REPLY: You are clearly living in another world dimension. In the one we are living, Way Forward has an awesome track record".
Now I’m really, really starting to believe Shantae is the next revealed Smash DLC fighter
@WhiteTrashGuy I liked Mirror of Fate.
Surprise me after paper mario
WayForward never disappoints, so I’m pretty excited with this event. I wonder what they’ve been working on...?
I know Nintendo confirmed it's a third-party game, but imagine if WayForward made a Wario Land game.
Seems like the perfect match to me. WayForward also makes a lot of games with female protagonists, so I would love to see them tackle a new Super Princess Peach, as well.
Everyone saying they wish it was a direct. Kelios is saying we’re getting one on the 20th
@Antraxx777
I tried. I loved the demo. And then that portion of the game turned out to be the only part I liked. I just wished they would have focused on one character and their journey. I really liked LORDS OF SHADOW.
Betting it’s a 90s arcade comeback. Double Dragon?
@Bl4ckb100d I'll take that bet, given it explicitly won't be. Please send $10 at your leisure.
To say we're long overdue for a proper Direct would be an understatement at this point. I figure with July already underway that the fall/winter/Christmas season reveals HAVE to be close.
Well this is pretty big news, and welcome! Echoes of E3 and what we’ve missed because of this wretched pandemic.
Wishing Treehouse a fun and safe presentation and hopefully we’ll get a cool reveal.
Well, this is a surprise! And Nintendo weird.... No direct, but randomly announcing, of all things, TREEHOUSE?! So they're kind of doing E3... And the most physical contact part of it..... But "circumstances"have been there issue.... I'm glad to see it but it's so no out of nowhere!
At least e3 it's happening
Curious about the property that Wayforward's looking into. They've worked on the Duck Tales Remasters, A Boy and His Blob, Contra 4, and River City Girls, but 'third party' could easily mean an original IP from Wayforward or another company. It does give the idea that it'll at least be console exclusive to Switch. Whatever the case, looking forward to it. I'd take more of these small, quick announcements in place of Directs if they came out consistently.
@Cosats Wayforward only has a bad track record with licensed games, and those tend to have a ton of publisher interference that's led to them being maligned and pretty much extinct these days. They're usually good to great in most of their other ventures, including time on established IP's.
@Nookingtons they say the same ******* thing every month. “Oh, new direct coming this month, this time I’m SURE of it”. As much as I want it to happen, it probably won’t
@RPGamer Just doing it for likes.
When I'm really looking forward to a game, I prefer to see almost nothing about it before I get a chance to try it myself. I think the experience gets better. So, I won't see.
Third-party... Nintendo's showcasing it...mind's a complete blank.
@TimboSlice Their track record for big 3rd party IPs is pretty good, many are critically acclaimed. They did Scorpion King GBA, A Boy and his Blob, Double Dragon Neon (is great no matter what IGN says), Batman Brave and the Bold, Adventure Time - Hey Ice King (Zelda II love letter), Aliens on DS, DuckTales Remastered, and a little game on the DS called CONTRA 4!
I don't know if you've played them but the Shantae games are pretty great, they're really fun light-hearted Metroidvanias/platformers with solid classic game mechanics and a sometimes ridiculous amount of animation (even on the Gameboy Color no less). Mighty Switch Force 1 & 2 are also great with their puzzle platforming and Daft Punk inspired soundtrack. Give any one of those a try you'll probably have fun, unless you hate 2D.
Whatever it is, it's clearly a big and beloved franchise if it's going toe to toe with Paper Mario.
Sonic Advance 4? A new Castlevania? Mega Man, even?
Definitely gonna be keeping an eye on this one.
I'd love to see a new Shinobi, Sega seems to be licensing out their lesser known IPs to smaller devs.(Wonder Boy, Streets of Rage 4) so that's likely.
I'm expecting it to be a new Castlevania though, which would be really nice too. Its about time for Konami to release a new Castlevania since the Netflix series is pretty well liked.
Man I immediately thought of Castlevania when I saw this announcement, and sure enough the first comment said that. Oh man what could it be?? Can we take a moment and appreciate how much WayForward has been putting out since last year? We got Mighty Switch Force Collection, River City Girls, the once April Fools joke made real released on April Fools Catgirl without Salad, and Shantae Seven Sirens. I'm losing my mind trying to think of what series it could be.
@RPGamer @Chimera_Police Won't be Double Dragon, they already did Neon. This will be an IP WayForward has never done before. As far as hand-drawn Double Dragon ....River City Girls is right over there . They're all from Kunio-Kun... it counts.
Yeah a hand-drawn Double Dragon would be boss.
@TrevorMcD dang, did not know they did Neon. I’d love to see more brawlers though
@Not_Soos I think you’ve read my mind. Marry me
Maybe this will be something special. A third party company developing a game with a Nintendo IP. Like the Cadence of Hyrule. Maybe?
Ooh. Can't wait for entitled fanboys to complain that the game they wanted wasn't announced.
Aww I missed Treehouse this year. Really happy about this.
@Cool_Squirtle never complain just to complain. Positivity.
@DM9982 Totally agree. Could use something and enjoyable to watch
If they show enough Paper Mario footage it will save me buying the game.
@TimboSlice Huh - they rarely, if ever, make a bad game. And they tend to be one of very few dev's not to mess up borrowed franchises.
They only downside to Wayforward so far is that they have been exclusively 2D games.
What's a difference between Direct and Treehouse?
@BlackenedHalo
Direct = trailers and clips
Treehouse = live gameplay
@Antraxx777 @WreckitRyan She's been near the top of my list since before Joker was announced, and I've believed for a while that if Nintendo intends to represent indies in Smash that she'd be the best choice; with five games and roots in the Gameboy Color she has a far more worthwhile pedigree than any other character, especially ones like Shovel Knight and Hollow Knight who, despite how well received, have been in just one game (of their own). I'm not confident enough to truly predict it (I'd need at least +1000 to put money on it), but I certainly hope tomorrow's stream ends with a Way-centric One Last Thing.
Technically, F-Zero isn’t first party Nintendo anymore, pretty sure they sold it to Microsoft.
@COVIDberry at the end of origami king trailer they had the samus helmet thing happen. Hmmm it could be the 2d metroid that would be cool!
@DoktorTotenKopf
Not everyone is familiar with WayForward, even if they might know their games (and they might not even know the games). i, personally, know of Shantae and River City Girls but I was unaware that WayForward was behind them until today.
@sbbassist F-Zero has not been sold by Microsoft and is still very much owned by Nintendo. A few years ago a new game was rumored to be developed under Criterion but it was proven false around that time.
@Dm9982 agreed 👍
@TimboSlice you must be googling an alternate dimension's WayForward. Shantae series, Xtreme Sports, Sigma Star Saga, Mighty Switch Force and Vitamin Connection, Contra 4 and Duck Tales Remastered, quality metroidvanias based on Aliens, Mummy and Hotel Transylvania franchises, a Silent Hill dungeon crawler, co-developed River City Girls and Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night - one heck of a portfolio, and that's just the crème de la crème.
@Dm9982,
There is a rumour of a direct on the 20th of July, although at this point I do not trust in any rumours anymore.
Where's the real E3 one at? And no covid is not an excuse. people can edit videos in safety.
Hope there will be a direct this month. I need some new nintendo game announcements.
I never player shantae, is it good?
@kalosn i think a realictic style similar with the art style of Metroid Prime Trilogy would be good and in 3D, this syle will allow Wayford or another developer who handle a new 2D Metroid that continues the Metroid Fusion story,really good and expresive atmosphere and animation.
@Orpheus79V I hope!
I like how they labeled it 'Nintendo Treehouse Live July 2020'. I hope we get one for August 2020 too.
Yacht Club are Way Forward people, so if we get something on the level of Shovel Knight from the presentation today, I'll be ecstatic.
@Cool_Squirtle As is tradition...
6pm not 5pm UK time btw
Welp.
So happy that Nintendo presented one of WayForward's bad licensed games, one that manages to make Sword and Shield look like one of the best looking games on the Switch.
@Giancarlothomaz Oh yeah, that would be fascinating, but Wayforward was actually working on a third-party property, so I guess we should still wait for a proper reveal for the new Metroid game. I wonder who's developing it, hmm?
@kalosn i watched GameXplain live for the Wayford game, and was very dissapointed with that, i expected Wayford new game to be a Castlevania game that despict the 1999 Battle hinted in Castlevania Aria of Sorrow,maybe Mercury Steam is developing the rumored new 2D Metroid game.
@Giancarlothomaz I have... some things to speak about their Bakugan project, but I will leave that for the news page, maybe.
I also hope MercurySteam is developing it too, I haven't heard about them for a while, and judging from what they said on this interview (https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2018/07/head_of_mercurysteam_believes_nintendo_and_konami_resurrected_spanish_studio) maybe they've been working on something alongside Nintendo. It would look graphically similar to Spacelords, their latest game.
@kalosn that a really good art style for a Metroid game, but i imagine Metroid Prime 4 will be Switch best looking game, with Metroid Fusion sequel and Bayonetta 3 close behind.
@Giancarlothomaz
I hope they also make it one of the best-looking Switch games, and Bayonetta 3 too! Even if that means they won't run at 60fps on the current Switch (something tells me Bayonetta 3 will arrive next year).
@Mrnotultra NEVER MIND THAT WAS AWFUL
