Update (Wed 29th Jul, 2020 09:45 BST): And it's a success! Neko Ghost, Jump! is now just over 100% funded with over two days to go.
This means that the game is now confirmed for Switch, but there are still some stretch goals that the development team hopes to hit before the campaign is over. If you haven't pledged your support yet and want to learn more, check out the Kickstarter here.
Original Article (Mon 6th Jul, 2020 10:30 BST): Neko Ghost, Jump! is a brand new platformer hoping to launch on Nintendo Switch and other platforms, with funds currently being generated on Kickstarter to do just that.
The game features a neat perspective-switching mechanic which sees you shift the action from 2D to 3D, just like the dimension-flipping gameplay found in Super Paper Mario - a game that Neko Ghost, Jump! just so happens to have been inspired by. The shift allows you to solve puzzles, successfully fight against enemies and clear levels faster. Check out this official description:
Neko Ghost, Jump! is a pawsome puzzle-platformer that tasks players with switching between 2D and 3D camera perspectives as they guide Nekoman on an epic quest to rescue his bride-to-be, friends, and family from the evil Space Dog Pirate Boss and his minions. This adventure will take Nekoman across several biomes ranging from grassy plains to snowy tundras, to sweltering deserts and beyond.
Along the way, players will have to not only switch between 2D and 3D planes but also between their physical and ghost forms to defeat any baddies along the way as they pounce across a series of entertaining yet challenging obstacles that will test their spatial awareness to the limits!
Here's that 2D to 3D shift in action:
If you're interested in learning more and pledging your support, you can find the Kickstarter campaign here. At the time of writing, the campaign has 25 days to go and is already over a third funded.

Super Paper Mario got contender.
really interesting, i dont see the SPM formula used much. i wish the switch from 2d to 3d looked more smooth tho, it almost looks confusing to switch through
Sorry I'm done helping people. Go to the bank and get a loan 🤷♂️
feels like levels in Sonic Forces where you switch from standard to 3d, but the game is kinda cute, actually
@JRJalapeno well, if you are done helping, at least a 1000 aren`t, so he`s gonna get some support, at least
I loved the way Super Paper Mario worked and wished there was another, the flipping between 2D and 3D was brilliant.
Major fan of SPM, but this just doesn't look great...
I played the demo on PC and it was VERY rough. I hope they manage to polish it up before release because the idea is solid.
This looks good. I loved the 2d to 3d switching in super paper mario.
@Fazermint It's still early.
The characters look terrible (too childish), and the animations need a lot of work. I like the idea of Super Paper Mario, I haven't seen it again, and it's got a lot of potential, but this just doesn't seem good at all...
I used to have this program on my computer called neko and it was a little white cat that chased around my mouse cursor. It made win95 a lot more fun
I think Kickstarter is a waste of time, so I won’t donate, but I’ll probabaly pick it up when it comes Out.
@boxyguy it’s still in its first stage, I’m sure everything will be better as it goes along.
"...rescue his bride-to-be..." And I've lost interest.
@Anti-Matter Thanks for the thought! We sure hope so
@boxyguy Aye, we may go back to the drawing board on the switch. If by smooth, do you mean slowly going from one camera angle to the other than the "almost instant switch"? I don't know if you have a PC, but you should try out the demo and let me know if you still think it should be smooth.
@JRJalapeno Sadly, that's just not possible. Especially during these trying times. Banks also don't really care about Indie game dev studios.
@ArtiomNLS Never played Sonic Forces, had to Google it. Yeah, it looks almost similar. Looks like you don't have any control over it though. Here you do. Also, they don't use a true orthographic camera for 2D. But glad you think it's cute!
@ArtiomNLS Thank you very much for your defensive support, there's so much negativity out there. But at the same time, it's understandable that some people may have been burned by previous KS projects. Definitely won't be by this one though. Too much has already been invested into it.
@Bunkerneath Haha, you never know, maybe you'll see SPM 2 if this project succeeds and others are made aware of the interest!
@Fazermint What doesn't look so great about it? Can you be a little more specific, please? All feedback is appreciated, it'll only help us improve the game! While we can't take everyone's feedback to implementation, I am more than happy to hear everyone's thoughts and take it into consideration.
@kickerofelves Thanks for playing the demo! It's much appreciated What were your PC specs? What exactly was "rough" about it? You can definitely bet that EVERY bit of the game will be polished up by the time launch occurs!
@1UP_MARIO Thank you very much! Glad you think it's good, it'll only get better!
@noswitchbutidc Aye, still early Lots to improve upon still! That's why Kickstarter is nice. Especially the beta pledges. They'll be able to play and provide us feedback about the game improving on it greatly with fresh eyes!
@the_beaver The whole art style is supposed to be simplistic, cute, and kawaii. I intentionally did that for many reasons, but one of the major ones = time/money. If you want high fidelity art, it not only costs more money... but a lot more time. AAA and bigger indie studios have that luxury. Animations are constantly being worked on though and will be improved!
@Apportal_SMM2 No problem! I understand some folks have had some frustrations with Kickstarter in the past. But you won't have to worry about that with us. At the very least, check out the page, maybe share it with others to see if they would be interested in it. Lots of cool rewards!
@DrDaisy Why did you lose interest as soon as you read that BTW?
@BurgosGames wowie, you replied to every comment in the thread, bonkers. Looking at the trailer, I quite adore the game, because I just love cats, reminds of games like super phantom cat on mobile, but with both perspectives. But I still have some questions like: will it support coop/vs play? Will the game have only the story mode like super phantom cat or some more side missions/party mode online etc.? Will be really happy if at least some questions will be answered :3
@BurgosGames Wow hi there! Thanks for taking the time to reply to my comment. By 'rough' I really just meant 'unfinished', which is to be expected since the game is still in the middle of development (is it in Beta or Alpha right now?)
More specifically; I found the movement physics a bit slippery and difficult to control. I kept building up too much momentum and catapulting off the edges of platforms.
My PC specs are: i5 7300HQ 2.50ghz, 8GB RAM, SSD + HDD, nvidia gtx 1050, Windows 10. The game ran just fine, no frame rate drops that I can recall.
Good luck with the project! I hope the rest of development goes smoothly
@ArtiomNLS Of course I would! Why wouldn't I? Communication is very important between developers and their communities! So, to keep things simple. No, coop/vs play. However, if the game can pay the bills and then some, I would love to do a "Speedrunners" type of VS mode.
There's always the possibility to make it a stretch goal, but honestly, that seems way out of scope and would prolong development even more. Better to keep it simple and polish it up as a single-player experience and then if the game sells well enough, do a sequel with coop and VS modes.
There will be secrets all over for you to find. And yes, that will include secret levels, but honestly, you're the first one that knows about that
Why does the narrator at the start sound a little like me-- err, I mean, Soos from Gravity Falls. Who isn't me. I'm clearly not Soos!
@BurgosGames yeah something similar to that, the camera actually turning to show the new perspective. i guess from first impressions the "instant switch" took me by surprise, maybe im just use to the way SPM did it. the way your video presents the mechanic makes it seem like its just transitioning to a diff scene, rather than moving from a 2d to 3d plane.
but really surprised to see you reply here! seeing your passion to discuss the game with onlookers might let me try out the demo later. good luck with your project, it'd be great to see more perspective mechanics used in games like this~
@kickerofelves Hi back You are very welcome! It's basically very late Alpha, early Beta. So yes, lots of room for improvements!
The slippery movement I will actually be investigating sometime either this week or next, there are a few other things in higher priority sadly. But yes, I have noticed it and have been wanting to fix it. While it's not a lot, there are enough other people also that have noticed and complained, so it has definitely been on my radar!
Oh okay, so it wasn't a performance issue...that's good because I was like, we did a huge optimization pass recently!
Thank you very much, I hope it goes smoothly also
@Not_Soos LMFAO... sadly... that's my voice... a few things didn't pan out the way I wanted to before the Kickstarter launch (2 trailer editors failed to deliver, a voice actor with the "right voice" couldn't be found), so in the end, although it wasn't ideal, I just left my placeholder voice over in there.
But I didn't know who Soos was... and I just looked it up. Well, the voice actor did a great job doing a Hispanic male's voice, I just happen to be a Hispanic male, so that's probably why we happen to sound alike. Haha.
@boxyguy Ah that makes sense... well, we originally had it like that a long long time ago, but ran into a lot of issues, we recently tried it again, and ran into some other issues. I'm not sure I can post links here. But if you Google "Neko Ghost Jump Gamejam" you should see the original gamejam version...and you be able to see the old Itch gamejam submission and there's a video of how the transitions used to be. I think there's enough interest about the camera transition, that we'll take another look at it in the near future. I will only get one shot at making my dreams come true...so need to make sure it's the best foot forward!
It's a shame that you are surprised...Developers should be interacting with the communities as much as possible. Actually, I didn't even know this was posted here today, I just happened to see it on my phone's news feed! So I got lucky, read comments, signed up, and replied!
How about making the game as great as it can be, release the game on whatever platform you can and then use the funds you make to port the game?
These Kickstarter games very rarely make good on their promises. You're very likely throwing money away if you support them.
Go to a publisher. If you can't find one then perhaps it's a sign.
@RPGamer SPM was very story-focused, lacked platforming. We are on the opposite route. More focused on the platforming and action vs the story. There is a story, and it'll be a good one, but we aren't not heavily focused on the story itself. Gameplay first.
@Moon The game can only be as great as it can be with the support of the community. This is one of the purposes of launching a Kickstarter. You can't expect all games or studios to have huge financial backing from the start. We are not Nintendo and have never tried to act like them, their resources are monumentally bigger than 99% of indie studios. There's no reason to compare.
You will not be throwing away money for supporting us. This is not something I took lightly coming onto Kickstarter and asking for support from strangers.
I have been in contact with plenty of publishers, but sometimes the deals they offer are NOT better than just trying to go at it alone. So please do not assume that just because we do not have a publisher that it means anything.
200 people on Kickstarter would tell you otherwise so far.
@BurgosGames I hope you guys succeed. You can tell it’s in the earlier stages of development, but with some polishing (and six months until release) I personally think it will be great! (Also any plans for more plushies? The one right now looks amazing, and I’d love to see more!)
@WickedUnicarnBoi Haha, we are looking into possibly offering another variant of the plushie, but it's a lot harder than it looks to get plushies looking the way you want. Also, with COVID, everything takes 2-3x longer than it should. So, most likely, sadly no. This one will be the only one we offer. At least for the Kickstarter.
And yeah, if I have to push back the timeline because by the time we are expected to launch the game, it doesn't feel right, I will. I know I will disappoint some folks, but we only get one chance to launch, one chance for that first impression, it better be the very best launch I could possibly do!
With that said though, our production sprint cycles are weekly, so our iteration times are very fast. While we do have quite a bit of content to finish up, there's no reason why we couldn't launch on time on all platforms (we already have it running on the Xbox, next will be Switch and PS4 tests).
@RPGamer No offense taken. I am very happy to hear any feedback from anyone at any time! I thank you for the time and effort you put into even bothering to state said feedback. If gamers are silent, we have no clue!
As I mentioned before, we will be looking at the "flipping" mechanic once again and seeing if we can't make the transition look smooth (and more in line to how SPM did it) Did you check out our game jam video? If not, Google: "Neko Ghost Jump GameJam Edition", it's something we tried in the very beginning.
Yeah, it's a shame that developers don't often talk to their audience. I am a bit surprised. But I guess that's what makes indie studios different than AAA.
As I said, we'll be adding more story elements (we already have a nice intro actually in the game telling how it all starts), but I'd love to do cutscenes and more story bits. But again, that costs time/money.
One thing at a time though. We need to reach our funding goal, so I can put out the stretch goals...I think you'll be happy with a few of them since you like a story so much
@BurgosGames okay, will do. 😃 i’ll donate because I believe in it, Kickstarter always has some string attached to the nice items companies send out.
Everybody gangsta till the literal company of the game starts responding to people 😂
@Apportal_SMM2 Aww, thank you so much for supporting us! And yes, you'll receive all items that you request. There's nothing there that we haven't made as a prototype for Kickstarter yet, so I know it can all be done.
As for your "gangsta" remark... LMAO🤣
It's okay, I really like hearing feedback from people, good or bad, we won't know if we're on the right path or not if people don't speak up. So I really appreciate it. Especially since they took the time and effort to even bothering to post in the first place!
@RPGamer Yup, actual dev here. Nice to meet you as well. And of course, it's a pleasure hearing from the community.
-Which animations are you referring to?
-We will be reworking a lot of the art time goes on, we actually have an art review going on this week.
-Oh, there are a lot of things I want to add. Definitely would like to add as many funnies as possible.
Physical editions are currently out of scope. I really wanted to have them for the Kickstarter campaign, but I couldn't find anyone willing to do it on a "no-name" game. Again, another reason to get on Kickstarter. Validation. There might be opportunities with limited physical editions if the Kickstarter does well.
One step at a time though, and that's getting to our funding goal. So tell everyone you know about it and then tell them to share it, and then hopefully the ever-growing word of mouth train will do its job!
@Alec_Weesner the music was very cutesy and fit very well I think. Good job!
@Alec_Weesner about the music, really relaxing and fun to listen to, fits the style of the game a lot imo. Good job there!
@BurgosGames You guys on Twitter?
@RPGamer Understand on the animations. And again, that's what you can expect out of this studio. You will have full transparency, we'll listen to the community's feedback, take action whenever it's possible or makes sense. And yes, sleep is important. That's why I am so late on replying
@noswitchbutidc Yes, @BurgosGames for the studio. @NekoGhostJump for the game.
@BurgosGames Because I'm sick of "damsel in distress" plots.
@RPGamer You as well!
@DrDaisy I see. But you have a Daisy avatar? You know in Super Mario Land she was kidnapped by Tatanga, right?
never played a paper mario game (zoomer here) but will love to play this.
@BurgosGames Awesome to see you answering questions!! It looks like SPM mixed with Little Big Planet. This will definately be on my radar. On graphics: for a 3d kickstarter game I think it looks great!
@Snatcher You should definitely check out the demo now if you have a PC. Otherwise, you'll have to wait for Switch version
@Blooper987 Of course! That's what we should all be doing as developers, listening to community feedback, communicating, and just being awesome to each other! Thanks for the kind words! Here's hoping many others agree with you and more people back our project on Kickstarter 😋
@BurgosGames don't have a pc so have to wait for switch.
@Snatcher Gotcha. No worries. Tell all your fellow Switch friends to check out our Kickstarter and see if they would like to help the campaign out! Have a great weekend.
it looks very empty and lacking charm almost as though it was created on some drop and drag tool.
The constant cat sounds are really annoying. This alone is enough to put me off.
@Hask Sweet, can't wait for you to play it!
@YANDMAN If you can find me a "drag and drop tool" that can make this game, I'll concede defeat!
@wazlon Some love it, some hate. Luckily, they'll be a "mute cute cat sounds" option!
@RPGamer Thanks so much! It's not over until the campaign officially ends! Lots of nice stretch goals everyone should try to get!
@BurgosGames Googles area 120 drag and drop 3d game maker maybe?
@YANDMAN Eh, I just Googled that because I had never heard of it. You wouldn't be able to make this type of game in that. But also, it looks like it was discontinued. So no game is going to be made with it.
Looks okay, but not amazing.
