The Switch library has a great selection of top-quality fighting games, but one title you may have overlooked is Fantasy Strike. It was designed by David Sirlin, the lead designer of Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, and comes with cross-play support.
If you haven't tried out yet, the good news is it's now free-to-play on all platforms including the Nintendo Switch. There are also two new characters to try out. Here's a brief rundown:
There is no paywall to practice offline and battle others in casual and ranked matches. The entire roster is available to everyone, including new challengers Sirus Quince, who confuse opponents with illusions, and General Onimaru, a powerful swordsman with an unblockable special attack.
Existing players retain the same access they previously had and receive 60 new costume colour sets as part of the Founders' Pack. New players can unlock additional game modes with the Core Pack (priced at $19.99 USD ). A new Fantasy+ subscription ($4.99 USD for one month) option also provides benefits such as double XP and a replay theatre.
Will you be trying out this game now that it's free-to-play? Tell us down below.

Been wanting to try this game for a while. Guess there's nothing stopping me now!
If it's free, why not?
Meh. To..... many..... other...... better..... games..... to...... play....
Will give this a try
...is this sponsored content?
Doesn't look half bad.
It’s free, so why not give it a try.
ok I love fighting game so.
Only online play is free for all other modes £14.39-£71.99 according to estore.
It's been on my backlog forever. Guess I'll download it to see what it's all about.
Another game added to my ever-growing Switch library.
I read earlier that Rocket League is also going Free to Play. I had a feeling it would eventually. Provided they don't tamper with the base game, I'm fine with it. Finding opponents should be quicker than ever.
Huh never heard of this game and it even looks good and free to play!
Actually had this on my wishlist for a long while so good news for me (if it is the case in the EU/UK).
I previously thought for a more simplistic fighter that it was, it was a bit too expensive for me. Or I just prioritised other DLs on my wishlist & new releases over this.
Was thinking of buying this, glad I didn't.
"it's free, so why not trying?"
People, there's so much stuff you can do with your time!
Amen
Downloading it now, it's quite a chuck though for a free game, almost 8 GB. And it's suspicious that one of the DLC packs is a whoppin' 80 bucks...
I was glad to see this game here. Sirlin makes great card games. I picked up Codex and it is supposed to be a RTS card game (that feels like Magic the Gathering as well, but an improved version). Nice to see this game here.
Nice, i can finally try it out.
@KnightsTemplar “too”
I'll wait for a sale.
Been on my radar for ages, so time to check it out. The Core Pack (£14.39) looks to have everything I'd need, and is priced well below the previous eShop price (£28.99). It's just a shame the replay theatre is locked behind the Fantasy+ subscription paywall, but not a major loss.
FYI - here's the description for both DLC:
Core Pack: Gives you access to several game modes: Arcade mode, Versus mode for local play (including standard and team battle), Survival modes (including 4 sub-modes), and the over-the-top Boss Rush mode where you assemble a deck of powerups against increasingly crazy CPU characters. The Core Pack also lets you send and receive direct challenges from friends in both standard and team battle modes.
Collectors Pack: Get everything in the Core Pack PLUS 13,500 gems, one year of Fantasy+ membership, the High Roller costume for Lum the Gambling Panda, and the exclusive "Party Time" KO effect.
I have to say tho! This game is really fun to play and its free!
Server keeps disconnecting me. Hopefully that is a sign that the game is going to be active.
I had initially written this game off, as to me it just seemed too "dumbed-down" for a fighting game. But after playing it a bit in its current free-to-play form, I have to admit that it has more than enough depth within its simplicity for me to call it a competent fighter.
However, it's still a far cry from the "reboot of the fighting genre" that it advertises itself to be, and I certainly don't think these type of simplified fighting games are gonna be replacing the more complex traditional fighters as the norm any time soon.
Might give it a go, somehow never played a fighting game other than Smash Bros or Kirby Fighters Deluxe.
@GX_64 Kirby Fighters Deluxe... now, THAT'S a game that should be released on the eShop as an HD version... the game is literally a couch, multiplayer game... and pretty fun, at that!
The funny part that the day they released this DLC I was literally thinking "I wonder what happened to Fantasy Strike"... all the DLC is pretty cool, but I already owned the game and don't want to RE-buy the "Core Pack" again by purchasing the "Collectors Pack"... they should have the "Collectors Pack" as an add-on to those who already own the game... making it $20 cheaper. Right now, there really isn't a cheap way around the process... to my knowledge, you HAVE to buy the gems to purchase the costumes and such.... and if you buy things a la carte to match the Collectors Pack, you'll spend more doing that rather than just purchasing the Collectors Pack and foregoing the $20 for the Core Pack... but hey! You get a bonus costume for Lum 😁😒😔
Whoa!
"Why don't you come on over, Valerie?" indeed!
