With E3 2020 now officially cancelled, game publishers and developers who were planning to attend the event will need to start thinking about their options. One of E3's major and consistent guests, Ubisoft, has already commented on its plans regarding the event's cancellation.
The studio has shared an update to social media, noting that it is "exploring other options for a digital experience" to keep fans up to date with its news. This sounds like it could well be a Nintendo Direct-style presentation or something similar, which wouldn't really come as much surprise.
We'll no doubt hear more publishers discuss their plans soon; we imagine that studios will be keen to use E3 week as an opportunity to showcase their games regardless of whether or not the traditional event is actually happening.
Update: As we were saying, we now have confirmation that Xbox will also be hosting a digital event:

Oh That sounds cool I guess
Ahh man it just won't be the same without the annual live Just Dance segment. The cringe on the faces of the audience can't properly be conveyed in a video presentation lol! Jokes aside Ubi usually has pretty good conferences games wise so I have high hopes for their "direct"
Well, I've already got the week put in for vacation. The last few years I've always taken E3 week off (monday - friday) to just sit and soak in the various gaming related news. So, I HOPE there's going to still be reveals and info, etc. From Nintendo and all other gaming companies that want to still get out their end of the year gaming info. My hope is that Nintendo does their Direct, and still does the Treehouse Live, maybe from Treehouse itself? That's the main thing I've watched during E3 since it started being broadcast. But I kept in tune to other streams like IGN, etc, as well. This is going to be a sad year for me if nothing gets done during that week.
At the moment, everyone making Directs sounds fine to me. I don't need a corporate head on a stage doing a drawn out presentation, trying to get all buddy-buddy with me. Nintendo doesn't do that, in their directs, and I love Nintendo.
Bring on Gods & Monsters, Ubi!<33
@Highlar there certainly will be a few digital events but I doubt it’ll be nearly as big a week as it was in prior years. Maybe you could take a trip somewhere that week instead? Traveling costs are low for the coming few months. It’s better than staying home all week feeling bad that E3 is off.
@redd214 Looking forward to more on Watchdogs.
That being said who says there isn’t a little room for a “Just Dance” and a lot of Tom Clancy. Dogs are cool too!
Wow, this really might be the end of e3 for the big 3
@NotTelevision oh I'm sure Just Dance will be in there, just won't have the same impact without the out of place musical performance and the journos in the crowd sitting awkwardly lol. And yes dogs, dogs always make everything better!!
Listening to NVC, Brian Altano said that without E3 companies would still be able to get their information out to the customer, but what would be lost is the behind closed doors bit where the deals between developers and publishers and platforms are made. This is especially big for indies.
I think the loss of E3 may be bigger than any of us originally thought.
Child of Eden for Switch please, Ubisoft?
That would be cool, Nintendo started something great, Direct to U.
Ubisoft direct.
As long as the dancing panda is back I'm OK with it.
@redd214 I was just thinking that one of the few good things coming out of this is that we won't have to sit through such intros, which always last WAY too long, and one can only handle so many people dressed up as dancing pandas, after all...
Would be nice if BGAE2 got an update.
@ThanosReXXX as someone who buys Just Dance every year, I thought they were far too SHORT lol
State of Play was just Sony's usual copy/paste approach when it comes to stealing good ideas on Nintendo's part.
Coronavirus on the other hand flat-out made Directs a necessity.
@NotTelevision Watch Dogs 1 was and still is the best in the series the online hacking was the best in that game
Might be best for all big game companies to go this route.
regardless of how some people feel
i'm really excited for more information on WDLegion, Roller Champions, R6 Quarantine and Gods & Monsters
the previous delays give me hope, i see it as they really don't want to keep flopping with more lackluster works after Ghost Recon, The Division 2 and Starlink
E3 should just go away I would rather have the companies do their own directs then watch III.
Hmmm... if only there was a way to stream live videos to people without them having to be there in person.
@redd214 Well, in that case, forget I ever mentioned it. To each their own, I guess. Enjoy what you want to enjoy, bro.
On a side note: even though the games aren't for me, it's not that I really hate them or anything. I just always felt that any long music or dance intro takes away from the time in which companies could actually be showing us game footage instead, so in that respect, I didn't really care all that much about 10 to 20 people hopping around on stage in clothing that only looks remotely fitting in a video game...
@ThanosReXXX I certainly will, the games are awesome! Though I understand the disdain from most gamers, we find them to be some of the best family/party games out
Everyone does what Nintendoes.
It's good though. Glad to see the industry moving away from these events.
I giggle at the time when people said Nintendo was insane doing just a digital event.
