This week's Indie World Showcase showed off several exciting looking games headed to Switch, and quietly nestled among them was Wingspan. It was only shown for the briefest of moments in the presentation, but we now know a little more.
It's actually a strategy card game that can either be played alone or with up to five players, and is based on the board game of the same name. You'll become a bird enthusiast, essentially taking on the roles of a researcher, a bird watcher, an ornithologist, and a collector all in one. We have a description, feature list, and screenshots to share with you below:
Discover new bird species and attract them by offering their favorite food. But keep in mind their natural habitat – animals won't settle in conditions they aren't adapted to. Have them lay eggs so you’ll be able to play new birds and gain more points. Roll the dice to gather food and draw cards to expand your reserve. Remember – each of the 170 unique birds has powers that echo real life: your hawks will hunt, your pelicans will fish, and your geese will form a flock.
WINGSPAN MAIN FEATURES:
- Discover and attract the best birds in this relaxing strategy card game.
- Play single-player or compete with your friends in a multiplayer mode for up to five players.
- Based on an award-winning, competitive, card-driven board game.
- Find hundreds of unique, animated birds with real-life audio recordings.
- Learn the many ways of accumulating points with birds, bonus cards, and end-of-round goals.
Very much a relaxing affair, this game's release date is set to be announced "shortly" - we'll make sure to keep an eye out for that when the time comes.
Until then, feel free to share your thoughts on the game in the comments below. Do you like the look of it so far? Have you played the board game before?

I've heard this is one of the standout card games of recent years. The way people talk about it, it sounds like it would've been a good Spiel Des Jahres candidate. Anyone here play the physical version?
I am definitely interested in this after hearing such good things about the board game itself. Now hopefully it is less than £20 and it will be an easy pick up.
Seems like an interesting take on the card game genre, I might actually want to play this one.
I admit I skipped over this when I read it was a card game. So I didn't care to watch the trailer among the many games announced. But this second chance I decided to give it a shot and I'll be buying this. This is right up my ally, I love animals and nature and would love to learn more abut birds in a fun way.
Thanks
I’ve played the board game. It’s pretty fun. If this is priced right, I might get it!
@jwfurness - Played and own the board game and it's great (okay I'll admit it seems to be a little overhyped... but it's a great game on its own!). And it actually won the "Kennerspiel des Jahres" (Connoisseur-gamer Game of the Year) which is the more gamer award at the SdJ is more for a gateway/intro type game
As a bird lover, I'm so getting this day one
@NickKnack Right, nice! We used to be big into table top gaming but got out of it around 2015. Now that our kids are a little older, we've been rediscovering some favorites. Really want to give this one a shot. Thanks for your opinion.
Oooooh...I do love birds
@jwfurness I own the physical game and its expansion, and it is amazing
I do quite enjoy a good card game. Definitely interested in this one.
i own the board game and the first expansion with the european birds and i am waiting the second one for Oceania(new Zealand and Australia) , is very fun and thematic i played solo, two and three player, the solo mode is one of the best made it ever
Your hawks will hunt, pelicans will fish, and geese will drag your rake into the lake.
@jwfurness
I'll second the previous comments. It's an excellent, laid-back engine builder. I strongly recommend it.
@jwfurness It did actually win the Spiel Du Jahres last year in the connoisseur category.
A few years back they split it up into main, connoisseur and family with main being for everyone, connoisseur for board game enthusiasts and family essentially for kids
@TheGameTutor Very cool. Now if only it weren't out of print and super expensive. Hope they are going to do another run soon.
@jwfurness it is still very available and you can buy it from the companys own website (which is the second printing with the swift start pack). Just not on amazon im assuming because everyone is buying board games due to potential lock in.
I love card games and birds so I'm definitely up for this.
Looks really great! But do I wish they had an option to have the game echo the birds/terrain of your region tho. These birds I think are all US/Canada based.
We definitely don't have Tuffed Titmouse's in the UK. And we don't have any Ruddy Ducks either!
@TheGameTutor Ah, ok. I checked BGG as well, and the prices were a bit inflated (~$80). Thanks.
@brunojenso there is a european expansion for the physical game. No idea if this is includes in the digital versio ... probably dlc
@TheGameTutor Oooh very interesting. That's definitely gonna get me considering buying this more knowing that. Thanks.
@jwfurness i have played the boardgame and its one of my discovery of 2019. Although im curious about how the Video game will play. Definitely interested if there is online play
This & Faerie has me the most excited from the Showcase...
@jwfurness It's a bit of an overrated title, imo. The player doesn't have that much control over what's happening and too much depends on luck of the draw. It's a nice change of pace if one is not interested in fantasy or other themes typical for games, but I'm a bit confused where all the praise comes from.
Wow, interesting. I might have to pick this one up after all, especially if Australian birds are included.
Any idea on a release date yet?
Not showing in the UK store
