If you regularly visit our sister site Push Square, you'll know all about Dreams. Media Molecule's game-making masterpiece has been taking the world by storm recently, with players creating truly astonishing game levels, art, and just about anything you could ever imagine, including designs based around Nintendo's very own Super Mario.
Dreams fans have been creating Mario levels for ages, but with the game now fully released into the wild, we're starting to see more and more appear. YouTube user YTSunny has uploaded a video showcasing some of the best levels available, which you can check out above.
You'll spot recreations of Nintendo classics - like the Super Mario 64 creation at the beginning - but you'll also find original level ideas, a take on Mario Kart, and a wonderfully large Yoshi (you'll know it when you see it). It's a tremendous tool, that's for sure.
We'll never see Mario appear on PS4 officially for obvious reasons, but running, jumping and wahooing as Mario with a DualShock 4 in our hands is still a weird experience to behold.

It's pretty interesting seeing what they can do with Dreams.
I noticed that his movements look a bit stiff, I wonder if that's due to something the creator did or if that's a limitation of Dreams.
Dreams can replicate Mario games, but i saw emptiness from the video above.
The places were just decorative purposes, has no function.
And the Mario Kart games looks like Mario Kart on Another planet with lower gravity.
Dreams seems kinda hokey to me. Most of the “games” don’t seem to offer much. Once the novelty wears off, it probably won’t get much burn. Though I suppose some people will continue to make some good stuff with it
That Mario themed content is one of the first things that people create in games like Dreams is a testament to Nintendo and Mario's influence in Gaming.
Such is the Power of Nintendo!
@Dethmunk Without meaning to be a sour-puss, I kinda hope so.
Although I've nothing against quality fan-games at all – and think Nintendo should embrace and work directly with labours of love like AM2R, seeing Mario on a mainstream console with wonky-physics and bad level design definitely hurts the brand.
buuuut, I don't know, maybe it's no big deal. Hopefully it'll inspire Nintendo to get more 3D Mario on the Switch asap.
@Dethmunk i'm surprised that they have't already, the amount of stuff i've seen that are using copyright assets is unbelievable
Wow. These look amazing. Great job
Is it really awesome though?
Pretty neat, it's awesome what people have been able to do thus far. Dreams is definitely not my kind of game but there are some very impressive creations I've seen!
It does seem like a legal grey area. At the end of the day, Sony are selling a game, which endorses a lot of copyright infringement. And Companies like Nintendo have the legal right to do something about it. It will be fascinating to see how this all plays out.
Fat Yoshi at 8.15 is so cute!!
Bore off all the morale copyright crusaders. Dreams is a fun tool and isn’t hurting a brand at all.
It wouldn’t surprise me if copyright material disappears but why gamers would be on here begging for this is beyond me. Stinks of fan boyism... I expect that on push square but expect better here.
Hats off to the people that create on dreams. Some really creative stuff going on. Obviously they don’t play like a Nintendo AAA if they did there would be major issues with Nintendo- let’s be fair.
@Dethmunk There's nothing Nintendo could do about this. It's user generated content made by the players and Sony aren't directly profiting from it
@huyi Nothing in Dreams is using copyrighted assets because it's impossible to import assets into Dreams. Every single asset in the game is crafted by a user. This, combined with the fact that Sony is only selling the tools and not directly profiting from the creations, means no company has any legal recourse for this
Looks great. Talented people.
There are countless Mario creations in little big planet also-have any of these been taken down?
Also, from my interactions with Dreams-these games can get as good as the creator. A lot of these Mario levels aren’t great but check out some of the other stuff. Kinda like Mario maker in the respect that’s there is trash, good stuff, and then master pieces.
Dreams really is fantastic.
Pretty sure companies can’t be held responsible for user generated content. Every single game with user generated content that I’ve played ends up resulting in this stuff and I’ve not once heard of any legal cases against them. It falls in a gray area that the company can’t sue over, unless they want to sue individual players.
@brunojenso @huyi @BarefootBowser @Dethmunk When was the last time Nintendo took down a mod or user-made content in games like G-Mod, Little Big Planet, etc? (Not talking about rom hacks or fan games)
I doubt any companies will (or can) step in and take down stuff on Dreams, since it is user-generated. Honestly, some companies are probably happy with the content being made, since it could draw some attention to their brands and franchises. It's been a ton of fun to explore and play, and I've found a lot of gems and a lot of hilarious hot garbage.
@roboshort It just came out. The reason there are even games there in the first place of any decent substance is because of the beta.
@ShadJV They can be held responsible, cuz technically that's all youtube is, user generated content that Youtube is responible for because it is hosting it. Sure a lot of parody or commentary stuff can stay up (but there are rules to it), but other vids that seem to pull from IP source material too liberally can get pulled or striked.
@Kalmaro have heard its those new to the animating thing, well done animations can be really good, just takes a lot of work and tweaking the settings for gravity, weight and the like, most users havent got the right settings yet
Seems like Nintendo would have a bigger problem with "Super Mario Universe", which seems like more of a Mario Maker-like PC program and more directly competitive with MM. In that case the software is intentionally providing a Mario experience, rather than the "whatever you can dream up" experience Dreams aims for. It's just that many people can only dream up things involving their favorite copyrighted characters.
In a way, people putting out Mario levels in Dreams is more akin to people discussing Mario in a forum, or sending fan art to Nintendo Power back in the day. rather than all the ROM hack level editors and Kaizo levels not made in MM. Nobody's selling their levels, they're just sharing their homages.
But I can see how having dozens of "levels" of Mario just woo-hooing around in empty Peach Castles with floaty controls and misshapen faces could be perceived as infringing in some way.
I just set up a scene in Dreams this weekend dropping in a Mario, 3 different block types, a Goomba, a Koopa, coin, and mushrooms. You can then take those elements and place them throughout your scene. It gives you an idea how tricky it would be for Nintendo to attempt a Mario Maker for 3D, although I'd guess it would be a bit easier to base it on 3D World rather than SM64. And Galaxy would be much harder. If people stick to original ideas, Dreams will have more unique and interesting experiences, but it will be harder to get those noticed without the familiar names and faces to attract the browsers.
Pretty sweet. I've been seeing a lot of cool stuff in Dreams from Mario to Crash Bandicoot and someone even recreated P.T/Silent Hills!
It should be "an NES", not "a NES".
@MimoDX2 I don't know - are you saying they never do?
Hey remember when Nintendo sued that remake of SMM in LBP3 that came out just before SMM2 released?
I don't either.
Video of the infringing content:

@Kalmaro It's 100% the creator rather than a limitation in Dreams, at least based on everything I've seen from the game.
Dreams is the most incredible software I’ve seen. I’ve done a few tutorials, and it’s tough, but the possibilities are limitless. It makes you appreciate all the work that goes into creating these Mario games - sure some of the physics are a bit off, and the assets look a little clunky, but they’re still incredibly well done by passionate gamers. Great stuff!
@BarefootBowser I think you’re right and that PC is the best place for the title. If they put it there it’ll probably have a good sized community for years.
Could you post links so I can add them to my que?
@SmileMan64 there has been copies of literally everything on Dreams.
@Dethmunk user generated content is irrelevant. Is Nintendo taking down copyrighted stuff in Smash?
@Dethmunk You can't copyright dreams.
@Entrr_username Yep, noticed the same thing and it bugged me.
Copyright infringement much? lol
Very sloppy, compared to the unreal engine remake of Mario 64. I would think the Ps4 could offer better with how powerful it is.
@pinta_vodki No, but Mario can and was copyrighted XD
I wonder what happen to Sony's answer to Super Mario a.k.a. Sackboy. Media Molecule and Sony were all about him last gen, this gen it seems like he was forgotten with him getting only one game on the PS4 which is just a lazy port of the PS3 version that came out 6 years ago. There's no new LittleBigPlanet game at all for PS4 which is a shame cause I was hoping a new one would surface soon to go head-to-head with Super Mario Maker 2.
Sony do everything they can to destroy the japanese industry so promoting Dreams by saying Mario is now on PS4 and you no longer need a switch is another one of their petty method against the competition.
@Stocksy Fan-boyism and jealousy. If you're angry about the content being created in Dreams you may as well be angry at pens because someone once drew Mario in the back of their Maths book.
@H3r0oftim3 Dreams is a very powerful software creator on a powerful console. It's user generated from children upwards but you go ahead with your superiority and piss on their chips for their "sloppy" work.
@glaemay Yet again you're on another hysterical "Sony is Evil" diuretic diatribe. Where has Sony said "Mario is now on PS4 and you no longer need a switch". Why do you continue to quote Sony when it's really just down to your continually outlandish, lying embittered fanboy posts?
Some people here sure are acting needlessly petty
Did you say Mario on Playstation?? That's utter insanity!
I don’t get why they would spend time making subpar versions of existing games rather than original content but hey free advertising for Nintendo.
...Yeah I'm pretty sure this is a very different case from the usual "Mario remake on unreal" or something.
That reminds me alot of "Project Spark" on Windows 8.0 and XBOX One ~~2012.
Was the same as Dream - Game creating Sandbox Game ... And Free2Play. There were also alot of Mario & Sonic spinoff / ripoff games haha
"We'll never see Mario appear on PS4 officially for obvious reasons"? HAH! That is like saying old 1991 me that I would never see Sonic on a Nintendo console officially. Never say never.
Not bad for fan-made stuff. Though I do wonder how long Dreams will last. Remember that "game-creation" game on Xbox360 (or was it XboxOne) ? That didn't last very long!
