This week, after waiting for months on end, we've been overloaded with new information and details about the upcoming and highly anticipated Switch release, Animal Crossing: New Horizons. As you might have already guessed, we're incredibly excited and so is our American-based video producer Zion Grassl.
To fill time between now and the release of the game, he's prepared an in-depth breakdown of the latest presentation and it's now available for your viewing pleasure. As stated in the title, this video highlights 20 details you might have missed. We're talking about some serious fine detail analysis - like the ability to craft an ocarina. Did you know that?
Animal Crossing; New Horizons arrives next month on 20th March. You can pre-order and pre-load the game right now from the Switch eShop and even redeem the game with one of your Nintendo vouchers. If you would like to see how our senior video producer Alex Olney reacted, you can view the video he uploaded earlier this week.
Did you learn anything new from the above video? Did you see something yourself worth mentioning that we didn't highlight here? Leave a comment down below.

Number 1: There are animals
Number 2: There are crossings.
One thing I didn't miss during the direct was the moaning about saves
The Direct got plenty excited, it’s currently number two on the European eShop on preorders alone... a month before release. This game is going to be absolutely huge and a system seller... another one. The Switch is a juggernaut and Nintendo’s software is driving it.
So many cute little details. ❤️
Hi Zion. You can see that secret beach you mentioned being accessed at 4.42 in your video. You shovel the land out of the way. Can't see much though as the wooden ocarina info is in the way.
Number 3: There are horizons, but not the ones you are used to
Number 4: It is new.
I wonder how useful being able to edit the landscape will be? It's cool we can jump too.
@biglittlejake I would say that shifting the landscape creates a monumental leap akin to what botw did for Zelda. The possibilities it creates are totally insane, and I don't think that's sunk in with people yet. I predict we are going to see some really crazy Creative stuff within the first few months
Even if you don't remodel your entire island, the landscaping is still immensely useful. I'm sure we all had those moments when the river was just a tiny little bit in the way of our building plans.
The note about the tool wheel, I spotted in the Nook Mile reward bit that it was one of the things you can buy pretty cool little upgrade!
@Crockin
People are still finding new secrets in Breath of the Wild. I do expect I will be making a few waterfalls. This will be Nintendo's game of the year. Who knows maybe even the overall game of the year.
where are the amiibo cards even being sold still ? I can only find them on ebay or used game stores
@biglittlejake it may have some strong competition, there are strong rumours about Mario Kart 9 and Paper Mario this year
@biglittlejake totally. there will probably be another great game or two, but I think this year is all about Animal crossing
@Crockin well... I think we'll see Breath of the Wild 2 this year.
My one question and complaint about the new Animal Crossing is... where is the Mii mask?!
@carlos82
Whatever happened to Pikmin and Metroid? I forgot didn't Breath of the Wild 2 get pushed to next year?
@sanderev maybe! Would more than likely be in december tho. I have a hard time thinking of what other franchise besides animal crossing would sell switch systems for majority of the year
@biglittlejake I think Metroid is a year or two away judging by the recent hirings at Retro Studios. Breath of the Wild has never had a release date but the rumour is that the plan was to launch it later this year but its behind schedule so next year is most likely now. I've not seen anything concrete about another Pikmin, at best I'd expect a Wii U port
@Crockin Mario Kart 9?
It’s Able sisters... and he calls her “La belle” instead of Lable. Sable Mable and Lable. Even though Mable is spelled Mabel and Lable Label.
I noticed in the video there was no mentioned about how the bug off and the fishing tourney have been taken over by what seem to be the grandchild of the original animal host(?). They seem to be some younger version of the same animal so i assume they are related, just like what is the case with Daisy Mae taking over Sow Joan's role. Makes me wonder if we will meet a grownup version of Katie considering Nintendo made her older in Animal Crossing New Leaf from her previous appearance in Wild World & City Folk.
@carlos82 I guess my main argument against something Like Mario kart or botw2 is that those games typically need about 1.5 year's worth of marketing which extends beyond initial release. Obviously there's exceptions like Mario Odyssey, but that would be a massive blockbuster no matter what, plus it was tied to a huge console launch.
Again nintendo can be unpredictable in ways, but one thing that is usually pretty predictable is their marketing cycle for AAA games and how they are spread out. I’m thinking paper Mario, Pikmin, maybe a resurrection of some kind like punch out or something. But who knows
I didn't even notice the ocarina! I hope it's a sign of more wind instruments in the game instead of just being there to reference Zelda.
@Crockin I think many publishers including Nintendo are moving away from having large amounts of time between announcements and launches. As you said Mario Odyssey was very quick from its announcement as was Smash and I think Mario Maker 2, and the Pokemon games come to think of it. Don't forget Mario Kart 8 is basically 6 years old now, I'd put pretty good money on Mario Kart 9 releasing to combat the new consoles as I'm fairly sure that Mario Kart is Nintendo's biggest seller on every console since the Gamecube, handheld or otherwise (third on DS but first on 3DS)
@carlos82
Thanks. As for Wii U ports; my desire would be for Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword, Minish Cap, and Phantom Hourglass. The legend of Zelda is my favorite Nintendo made franchise. Oh, and Ocarina and Majoras Mask would be awesome.
@carlos82 The animal crossing marketing is really just ramping up tho, and they want us engaged with this thing all year. I would be shocked if there was a general direct between now and April, and I think something like Mario kart or botw2(Longshot) would definitely have been confirmed by now. Q4 game Isn't necessarily Always the biggest one of the year.
I think pokemon swsh was a misunderstanding of the announcement/release philosophy. It was successful for sure, but the design really suffered imo
That is not tea next to Isabelle. It's alcohol.
@Crockin they always do close to release, also originally this was meant to launch last year. I had a quick look and Smash was revealed in a Direct on March 8th before launching in the December and look at the pattern of their mobile games too. Well if I'm right I guess we'll soon know
@carlos82 you never really 100% percent know, this is pure speculation. my prediction on how the year will shake out.
-animal crossing in march+updates sprinkled through 2020
-smash fighter packs announced and released at a trickle
-a port of some kind between april-jun. Mario 3d world or pikmin, something like that.
-xenoblade in jun-jul +big Mario maker update
-aug-september, revival title And/or bravely default 2
-rumored big paper Mario game for Oct or Nov
-bayonetta 3 Dec.
E3 will announce Mario kart 9 or a 8 udate for 2021, no Zelda or Metroid footage or dates but perhaps a verbal reassurance. Arms 2? Personal dream-startropics revival
@Crockin we'll meet back here in a few months and compare notes 😉
@e-love Those cards are very old, you can no longer buy them. Maybe they'll come out with some new ones.
Pleased for everyone that likes Animal Crossing!
Looks like a 3DS game to me personally, with a bare minimum of new features but that's fine, I already knew this one wasn't for me.
It's a real shame it has come out so close to Pokemon, which was another big game that wasn't for me. It makes it feel like a bit of a drought, when it clearly isn't one.
I just hope we get some more core targeted games back to back later in the year to make up for it!
Wow, you guys just want there to be no surprises.
hey guys, get your boarding passes ready !
