With the success of Detective Pikachu and Sonic the Hedgehog – and the historical commercial performance of the live-action Resident Evil movies – the decision to turn Capcom's Monster Hunter franchise into a Hollywood action flick is looking smarter all the time.
Directed by Paul W.S. Anderson and starring Tony Jaa and Milla Jovovich, the movie will be getting a promotional push at PAX East 2020 on Saturday, February 29th thanks to the release of two promotional posters which will be given away at the event, albeit in miniature form (thanks, IGN).
The posters show Jovovich – who plays Lieutenant Artemis, a soldier from our world who finds herself trapped in an alternate dimension full of monsters – and Jaa, a resident of that fantasy world skilled in taking down said beasts. Jovovich is brandishing a Giant Jawblade while Jaa is holding the Great Hunter's Bow. Anderson has already stated that all of the weapons in the film will be lifted directly from the games.
Will you be standing in line with your popcorn when this arrives in cinemas on September 4th?

Hmm. They got the costumes right. Not so sure about everything else.
Where's the hokey charm?! Where are the KITTIES? If the movie is as straight-faced as it looks, it's gonna be instantly forgettable, just like Warcraft.
Of course the weapons will be lifted from the games. Have you seen his RE movies?, he straight up lifts scenes from the games.
This movie will flop hard. MH has wider recognition since MH:World, but it's still nowhere near RE levels. And without that, no one would watch this guy's movies.
One thing I want to ask is... why?
I can't judge the movie based on two posters, but so far it looks like a bland and generic live action video game movie. Because you can make a video game movie, that doesn't mean you should.
But hey, just giving my two cents. Like I said, this movie isn't out. Maybe the guys know what they're doing? Only time will tell.
Needs to be a lot more vibrant imo, going for a more "serious" tone loses half of what makes MH what it is.
Well MH has never been bigger thanks to MH:World. So now or never I guess.
Love the simple movie posters. But agree, a bit serious for MH. But it is a series - maybe other "introductions" will be more lighthearted.
Anderson again dumping his wife in another movie for the sake of doing it.
After the drama called Resident Evil movie (same Guy, did same stuff by giving Jovovich which is his wife a head role) I am getting shivers of how much he r***s the MH franchise in this movie.
5 seconds before they all grab machine guns which for some reason exist in the movie...
At least get some bulky people in movies like these, they look too small and too thin, I mean at least make it realistic lol...
Will my boy BIRD UP be in this?
Just when I thought we finally gotten over the bad video game movie curse, this reminded me this movie exists.
Aren't the weapons waaaaaayyyyy to small? 😝
I love Jovovich, her enthusiasm for her roles is wonderful.
But with the director of the Resident Evil franchise at the helm (no pun intended), this is guaranteed to be DREADFUL.
I read that this film has a budget of 60 million. To put that into perspective, Detective Pikachu had a budget of 130 Million, and Sonic had anywhere between 85 and 95 Million.
I really hope they use that comparatively small budget well, because I really want to see a hyper-detailed CGI cat.
this movie is gong to be a straight dumpster fire seriously who ask for this.
This movie is gonna be really, really bad.
I think this is based on a true story.
But is it gonna have Rathalos from Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker?
Mila and Anderson- the perfect combo to make me lose my lunch for a week. Why do they keep giving this guy these IPs it’s clear that the guy doesn’t know anything about resident evil, much less Monster Hunter. I’m sorry but I hope it flops. I don’t want 7 crappy sequels of this garbage.
Only reason Mila is in this is because she’s sleeping with Anderson...
I hate it already...
This actually might be good. I am much more excited about this than the Pikachu and Sonic movies. I saw the Pikachu movie and was not that impressed. I would take those twenty old Pokemon movies over the Pikachu movie. I was one of the few who didn't care much for Pikachu.
I picked let's go Eevee. I was always mad, in Pokemon Yellow, your starter Pikachu couldn't evolve into Richu. Anywho, I only played a few Sonic games. Monster Hunter became my favorite once Monster Hunter World came out, one of the few games I put hundreds of hours into. When will the next Monster Hunter come out for the Switch?
But were these screenshots docked or handheld?
@Damo ...is it a monster? Is it a monster? 😉
I hoped it'd take less than 20 comments for someone to get your reference lol
I was excited until I read the part about the one character coming from our world and being trapped in a different dimension.
@clvr Glad someone got it!
Can't really get into the Monster Hunter games, Paul WS Anderson is an awful hack, Milla Jovovich's career peak was nearly 30 years ago in Dazed and Confused, and yet... Tony Jaa! At least the action scenes should be good.
Give us the trailers already.
I hate they are making it a, "person from our world is pulled into the alternate world" story. You can tell a compelling story without a main character from the USA.
@itslukec but but but...Muricans always save the day, they're good and wholesome and heroic! /s
On a more serious note, don't you want studios to save money by shooting at least part of the film on Earth? Cause they sure do (see Sonic for example) 😉
So this will starred Anderson's wife again? Ha it's basically just Anderson's Resident Evil under a different name. Not interested. Capcom should know better not to let Paul W.S. Anderson do anything with their IPs anymore after what he did to Resident Evil.
Never have I been more bothered by the existence of a movie than this. Normally if you disrespect a franchise I love with bad films, I can brush it off. But given the pedigree of this director and his "undying respect" for the source material of his work, I'm expecting a train wreck that will break my gentle, MonHun-loving heart.
I'd take a MH movie but disappointed that it's Anderson again
This is going to make The Godfather Part III look like The Godfather Part I.
If Tony Jaa is in it, I watch it. End of story.
Why do all these fantasy movies these day have to have some connection to Earth in them. Won't people watch a movie if Earth isn't in it?
Thank god, I thought I was the only one who hated this director. Absolutely butchered (and milked) Resident Evil, to death! Now he wants to continue with monster hunter...please stop ruining my childhood.
Tony Jaa is in this?!
I haven't seen him in anything in years.
@Nomad
Keeps cost low to just shoot real life for 1/2 of the movie instead of making it 100% purpose built enviorments.
Respect wahhmonn
Ah yes, a film based on the gripping, award-winning narrative of the Monster Hunter series. Just what I've been waiting for!
Another "sucked into the videogame world and "OH WOW I NEVER HAD THIS HAPPEN TO ME BEFORE BACK ON EARTH!" Copypaste forgettable movie. At least Sonic had a bit of charm in the writing and not just the bad production history to make people go see it.
yeah this film is going to suck
Is anybody out there encouraging people like to do not support this film or something?
This movie will be 100% Guaranteed Dogs***.
@Dakotastomp Sonic was a charming and fun film that used its admittedly cliche premise rather well. So far Monster Hunter doesn’t seem to have any of that, but we’ll have to wait for a trailer.
Such a shame, it might have been a good movie if only Anderson wasn't in charge of it.
@ToonStuff We've just come back from watching Sonic. It's a really good movie, for what it is. It is really well acted, it has solid story and pacing, the humour is well done and not forced.
I think we were lucking they redesigned him, it meant you can enjoy the rest of the movie, rather than be pulled out of the experience by an odd yet pervasive choice.
@Richnj glad to hear you enjoyed it
Okay, i im interested.
Love the Ong bak movies of Tony jaa.
I predict Tony Jaa will die at the end and Milla Jovovich will become even more powerful.
Tony Jaa though... I’ll be watching it at some point:)
